Gr8Full Cre8ives Project

creativity promptAs the holiday season draws near, you may feel your stress levels begin to rise.  Even if it is your favorite time of year, it is not uncommon for it to come with added responsibilities which can mean stretching your wallet and schedule a bit more than usual.  For me, that means it is time to give myself the gift of more peace by upping my game when it comes to self-care.

Holiday stress busters can take all kinds of shapes, but I think the simpler the better!  Gratitude is a great place to start.  It is just a shift in perspective.  I set a goal to recognize gratitude daily…or close to it.  When I do, I feel like life is better and I can give more to it!

That is one reason I am working with the Cre8ive Klatch to spread the value of gratitude, specifically for Creatives.  We would love for you to join us in documenting the gratitudes in your life.  It’s easy.  It’s fun.  And it can make life sparkle a bit more!

Gr8Cre8 Invite

 How it Works….

Simply snap a photo of something that speaks to what you are grateful for and share it on Instagram with the hashtags  #cre8iveklatch #gr8fullcre8ives #cre8gratitude.  We will explore different themes weekly that you can use to inspire your gratitude practice or share straight from the heart.

Looking forward to growing more grateful with you!

Creativity Tribe Meets Cre8ive Klatch

Cre8ive Klatch RP

A few years ago as I tip toed out into the land of virtual reality and got caught up in the world wide web, I found myself creating unique connections with a tight knit group of online artists.  We started off supporting one another’s professional development and then, quickly shared more personal journeys.  Those were the seeds of the Cre8ive Klatch.

We were friends….that was for sure.  And then came the true test of friendship… working together for a common cause.

We had discovered that creative support could help us dig in deeper as Creatives.  We saw ourselves growing as individuals and as creative business owners. Now we have all caught Klatch Fever and are working together to support other Creatives through our shared ideas about creativity, DIY projects, and inspiration.

I am delighted to be featured on Cre8ive Klatch today.  For those who are just finding themselves here, welcome to Creativity Tribe, a Creative Living Studio.  Here we blend spirituality, self-care, elixir for well-being, play, imagination, meaning and magic for a boost to your Creative Spirit.

I want to invite you to subscribe to the Creativity Tribe blog by diving into the Creativity Booster Pack, a free mini e-course designed to tie a little lift to your Creative Spirit.  It is my gift to you!

A Little Practical Magic: Revisiting Blog Favorites

life is fairytale

I believe in movie therapy.  Grab your favorite snack, turn the lights down low, watch alone or with a good friend (or two), and prepare to be transformed and transfixed.  In our house we have a few favorites we gravitate to and Practical Magic with Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman is at the very top.

Several years ago, I was invited to participate in a blog party that focused on the movie/book, the Practical Magic Blog Party.  I felt kind of new to blogging (I was still over at my very first blog, Art of Collecting Yourself) and wished very much to try my hand at making videos.  As it happened, the blog party was scheduled for the week after I was to visit Washington State.  I had no idea what my offering to the party would be.  But I decided to jump in.

I started with researching the movie and quickly discovered it was filmed in a quaint little village not far from where we would be visiting.  I threw together an outfit that resembled the witchy aunts, packed my new video camera, and crossed my fingers that our hosts would be game for a day trip.  As it happens, they were.

And from that, came several short videos about the little town of Coupeville, WA and, of course, Practical Magic.

This month, I want to feature those videos.  They are very short.  They are such a hoot, and yet, they also have something a little deeper and more meaningful to share.  I hope you enjoy them.

So grab your favorite snack, turn the lights down low….and let the show begin!

Stolen Sharpie Revolution and the Little Cat Who Could

Schatzie Studio 404My day started in a bit of a funk.  I don’t know where it came from but when I woke up, it was in my face enough to make me close my eyes again.  I began thinking about what our home had been like in the years past when my hubby and I shared our bed with our cat Schatzie.  She was our bestie beastie, our forever furry. She had been with us exactly 7 years when she passed this Summer.  The first month after she died, I missed her terribly.  Then I picked myself up and have been scooting along in my new normal.  But today, my heart was aching.

A few years into having her, we discovered she would come to me when I was singing.  Honestly, I think she thought that sound coming out of me meant I was hurt, and she was checking on me!  I developed a song just for her after the Ritchie Valen’s song, “Oh, Donna”.

Schatzie Collage Glow

I have a kitty and Schatzie is her name,
Once she loved me I would never be the same.

I would sing it, then announce her arrival with my best emcee voice….Ladeeeez and Gentaaaaaahmen, please welcome to the stage, Mizzzz Schatzie Payne!  She would hop up on the bedroom pillow, and we would all fall asleep in a pile.

So this morning as I was thinking of her, I began to sing it for the first time since her little memorial service.  But I got choked up enough to stop, knowing she couldn’t come to the big stage in our bed if I sang.  And….I fell back to sleep.

My dreams were wild but felt beautifully magical.

I awoke to quick, hard footsteps coming up the stairs to my bedroom.  Running.  And then they stopped outside the door.  I was on alert.  No body runs in our house, really.

The door opened and my husband excitedly approached me with his cell phone in hand.  He was sharing Alex Rekk’s Kickstarter Video for the Fifth Edition of her book Stolen Sharpie Revolution.  This book has been with us about as long as Schatzie had.  Eric is a Zine maker, and I bought the book for him one of our first Christmas’s together.  Alex is a household word ’round Creativity Tribe Studio!

Eric Stolen Sharpie Revolution

I wiped the sleep from my eyes, sat up, and set my grief aside.  The video started with energizing music, narration by Alex, and pictures of her book in different scenarios.  And then…there on the screen, from the World Wide Web, was our own Super Star Kitty, Schatzie, sitting with our copy of Stolen Sharpie Revolution 2.  Mizzzz Schatzie Payne had come to the stage after all!

Alex had asked for images of her book being used in every day life.  As it happens Schatzie loved to sit on Eric’s zine collection.

After watching the video, Eric and I marveled.  We had both been missing her especially hard today.  And she found a way to affirm ……what? (as I am typing this, I am trying to put my finger on what she was trying to affirm….that we are still connected….that life goes on after death…. that what we had was as important to her as it is to us.  And through my headphones that were meant to block out the noise of the tv in the next room, comes a song by India Arie….I Am Light. I have never heard it, but it is blowing my mind in this instance.)

I am Light India Arie

And she found a way to affirm we are light…and we are more than the body, more than than cat and human, one life form “owning” another.  We were light together. Divinity defined, God on the inside, a star, a piece of it all.  Light.

Glow Cat Creativity Tribe

We are joining the other SSR lovers in supporting Alex and dedicating our support to Schatzie.  Seems fitting.  If you would like to see Schatzie and/or support Alex, head over to her Kickstarter.  Schatzie is the first cat in the video….among many cats who make an appearance.

And to Alex, if you happen to be reading this, we just never know what our message as Creatives is going to say to another or how our daring to share what our heart has to express will touch the heart of another.  Thanks!

Autumn New Moon Wishes and a Decade of Kisses

meaning and magicI adore the story of how I met my husband.  As it happens, today marks a decade since that fateful night.  Time is such a strange way to measure things because in some ways it means something and in other ways it means nothing at all!

time mattersI feel like we only met yesterday, our relationship still feels so new….and yet, I feel like I have known him forever.  We just click that way.  He is my family, my dearest friend, my creative go-to-guy, my biggest fan, my truest critic, and the love of my life.

I met my artist husband under a full moon while camping  out at a wild life preserve.  The evening, like the one below, was magical.

Sister Jo Bangels Play Your Drum

This Polyvore set, created by my artist hubby, depicts the night we met.

We were in costume…. I, as a gypsy, and Eric….a Renaissance artisan. I was on stage, drum in hand.  I spun out a story that talked of following the heart,  falling in love, and wishing on stars.

Up, he walked after my performance.  He seemed more confident than I have ever known him to be since.  In the distance we could see the wildlife moving in the shadows.  The tents for the medieval reenactment group transported us to someplace far away, even though we were not far from our Texas roots.

love is in the air

We sat, visiting and clumsily falling over our words.  I had a hedgehog in my pocket (see it in the corner of the picture he created?) and a little girl named Grace came to play with it…sitting right between us.  I couldn’t help but think her name might mean something.  I imagined myself someday telling someone that when we met, Grace sat between us.  (I have said it at least two dozen times since.)  And I think in that moment I let my heart wish for something MORE in my life and wonder if he might not just be IT.

Later that night he drummed and I danced under the moon and stars with the lake glistening in the background. I could feel the air thick with the stuff dreams are made of…that fairytales are spun from.  That began a short long-distance romance followed by marriage within the year.  We have been making beautiful music together ever since.  (Sounds pretty sappy, but it is every bit true. )

Let the air be thick with possibility for you during this Autumnal New Moon.  What do you wish for?  Begin forming your wish in the comments below and let us all energize those dream seeds together! I have been crafting my life in the manner for some time now, letting the moon take me close to my dreams and letting my dreams spill out into my life.  It is power… simple…. and energizing.  Dig in with hope…. and who knows what dreams may come!

Creativity Zones: Messy Studio Tables

Creativity Zones 2

Have you ever wondered what goes on in the studio life of an artist?  Well, Seth Apter with The Altered Page is asking us to drop the veil and reveal our studio tables.  As it happens I live with several artists, so I didn’t just have one studio table in the house, I had….

Rachél (that’s me)          Eric (my hubby)         Lisa (friend/roommate)

CT RoomMates

The first, inside the official Creativity Tribe Studio (click for a look at the studio).  All the artists in the house are working on altered playing cards for one project or another.  This is a great, quick project to do in phases.   I have been working on mine here. I especially love this picture because it shows a bit of cash in the corner from a check I got in that mail for some consigned jewelry.  The full circle life of art.  Make it, share it, sell it, buy more art supplies, a cup of coffee or maybe a used book!

Creativity Tribe Studio Table

This second table is an old card table that is set up smack dab in the middle of the living room.  Our roommate Lisa is set up here, with some of our art stuff finding its way there as well.  The table isn’t always there, but Seth caught us with an abundance of studio tables and a mess of cards.  We had an art card party not long ago and have enjoyed having more studio space, so they have stayed out.

Studio Table Shared

The last table is that same kind of card table, but it is set up in my artist hubby’s studio.  Eric didn’t know I was going to shoot his table, so you get to see a bit of his quirky personality shining through.  He is showing off his zines…Atlantis and Collide-O-Scope,  as well as, what was in his pocket for the day…change, wallet, keys, and a few bottles of essential oils.  Yep, I have an oil loving’ man!  And check out the surprise appearance by Mr. Potato Head!

Hope you enjoyed the tour.  For more uncensored studio tables, check out Seth’s Studio Table project on his blog.  And….thanks, Seth, this was a blast!

Creativity Tribe: A Creative Living Studio

creative living studio

Just two years ago this coming September, I breathed life into Creativity Tribe.  I stepped into the website with a lot of vision for the future and enough know-how to get me started on my journey.  I had never built a website before, but I was determined to create the sanctuary of my dreams.

Over the last two years, my life took turns I never would have foreseen.  I took off on a cross-country solo journey to teach at a Live Laugh Love Retreat in Wisconsin and just a few months into arriving home discovered I had Uterine Cancer.  I spent a good portion of this last year hunkering down to take care of myself.  I learned so much along the way.

I had surgery in March (everything is looking great!), but it has taken me up until last week to really feel like myself again.  Full energy, full hearted, full speed ahead.

All that time contemplating life and indulging in self-care helped me get clear about my intentions with Creativity Tribe.  So, I have taken the liberties of REVISIONING this space.  In all actuality, I am simply fleshing out what was a bare-bones beginning.

Sacred Cacao Highlights: First Time

Events

Sacred Cacao Circles

I am excited to begin offering face-to-face personal development work with ceremonial grade cacao.  My first public gathering will be in conjunction with a Red Tent Event at the end of August.  As a lead up to event, I want to share stories of my cacao journey with you.

My first time to sit with cacao was during a time just before Creativity Tribe was fleshed out as a website, so I am starting us off with a look back to July 2012. Originally posted at Art of Collecting Yourself, my first blog.

Please look for a series of posts following this one that are designed to get us all in the mood for a bit of chocolate, spiritual loveliness.

Details for my first public ceremony and the Red Tent Event associated can be found in the EVENTS section in the menu above.

Sacred Cacao Highlights: First Time

July 23, 2012:  A Band of Gypsies

This weekend a load of traveling creatives crashed in various corners of my house: couch, floor, studio. (I want to give credit to my dear friend Irene Jaan for coining the phase Travel Creatives which so appropriately describes this Band of Gypsies I call my friends.)

Left side: Milena Worsham and Aaron El Leon
Running Buffalo Journeys
Right Side:  Irene Carranza Jaan
Travel Creatives

We had all just come from a Sacred Cacoa Ceremony. Yep, I am letting my freak flag fly a bit here. Being a creative, you have to go where your creativity leads you, and lately mine has been expressing itself through my spiritual life.

We met in a little chapel I have passed by a thousand times but had never been in. The Chapel of Spiritual Light is on a triangular strip of land nestled between two busy streets , as if the city had grown up around it but it was courageously standing its ground. With a wooden frame reminiscent of old country churches, I found it quaint and unpretentious environment.

Take off your shoes and come on in….that was the way we were greeted, my sweetheart and I.  But we couldn’t get our shoes off quick enough. One after the next, we were taking in hugs and glowing smiles. One foot half way out of the first shoe, hug and smile. Hop on that foot to release the next shoe, hug and smile. Barefoot, hug and smile.

I walk through the door to the meeting area, a sanctuary with thick pile carpet that reached up to cradle each step. A circle of people, there, some long-time friends, some new and dear, others familiar faces, and even a few strangers…not strangers for long.

As we looked across the room at the symbol in a stained glass work, we recognized it as the symbol Eric and I had created for our wedding ceremony. For some, it is considered the Medicine Wheel or Odin’s Cross, for others, they might associate it with the astronomical symbol Earth. It had several layers of meaning for us. All more personal than religious. With three days left til we celebrated our 7th wedding anniversary (which actually happens to be today….July 23, 2012), we felt it was an affirmation that we were in the right place.

Once we got settled in, I looked over and realized there was a huge stock pot filled with a warm chocolate drink. That’s when the smell hit me. Mmmmmm, yes, chocolate.

Keith, The Chocolate Shaman, invited us to get our cup and add as much or as little honey as we wanted. The chocolate looked like glistening fudge in the cup, thicker and much darker than the hot chocolate most of us are accustomed to drinking. The honey was beautiful. I had been off sweeteners other than whole fruit for a week which made the addition of honey to the super dark chocolate taste like a little bit of heaven.

Soon after that, The Chocolate Shaman shared the kind of strength and intensity this pure cacao harnessed.  The chocolate most of the world consumes (you know, the big names like Hersey’s, Cadbury and Lindt), according to the Chocolate Shaman, are missing 80-99% of the beneficial compounds that can be found in the older varieties of chocolate. Processing and hybridizing depletes the cacao of so much of its essential goodness.

Keith brings the chocolate from Guatemala where he has made his home for around 17 years. He has a special relationship with the cacao plant and has connected with some of the indigenous tribes in Guatemala who remember how to use the plant for medicine of the spirit.

We began drinking the mixture. I listened to my body for how much it wanted. It was delicious. Darker than any I had ever tasted. Sweet and bitter blended with a kind of warm, silkiness that feels like love. Okay, so perhaps that sounds like I am exaggerating or using poetic license, but the fact is the evening felt loving. Self-loving and other loving.

I can’t help but think that it might have something to do with the jolt of energy that your heart and mind get from both the intense chocolate and the meditation Keith shares. It’s a rush… subtle and substantial all in the same breath. As he talked, I could feel my heart beat increase. My body wanted to move. I began to rock back and forth slightly. The kind of rocking that comes from your chest when you hear a groovy beat. I wasn’t tripping. I wasn’t on some crazy drug induced high.  But my mind felt clear and I felt high on life.

Keith explained that the cacao will encourage spiritual growth. It invites you to look at where you might grow and then helps assists you as you choose to go there.  That might sound very far off or far out for some. It comes from the belief that certain things have a spirit to them. Plants, stones, animals, the Earth. I decide to play along. I decided to act as if….and see where that led.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I chose to cultivate my curiosity, one of the freedoms I enjoy with being a Creative Spirit.
I am glad I did.
As for my Band of Gypsies {Keith, Brendan, Milena and Aaron} they are each on their own adventure now.  Some headed back to Guatemala, others spending time with family.  I am grateful to have their energy floating around the house. Feels good. Oh, and I nabbed a bit of that yummy chocolate waiting for the next ceremony….Creativity Tribe style.
For more information about ceremonial grade cacao and/or to order your own, visit Keith’s on-line home Chocolate Shaman and his FB page Cacao Tribe.
