Lessons from the Road

Lessons 2

This week I packed up my world, grabbed my favorite artist man, and left my hometown in South Texas behind.  We have stayed with family and friends along the way.

I am traveling in celebration of my Inner Gypsy Wild Woman, that part of me that has always wished to vagabond around with flowing skirts, bangles up my arms, leaving a trail of creativity behind. Wisconsin is my destination for an Art Retreat I will be teaching.

As I have made my way up to Dallas (where my artist hubby, Eric, and I are staying now) I have made mental notes about how traveling in my Gypsy personae changes the journey.

Merry Rachelee

My first lesson is about giving and receiving.

Being a guest raises some discomfort for me, no matter how gracious the hostess. I just hate putting people out.  But when I set my fears aside, I know that the offers of help, the free meals, the comfy bed, and invitations to share life for a few days is really what connecting is about.  It is how we tell others we care about them. It is how we bless one another.

Along my journey (up closer to Chicago) I will be staying with Helen Bond of Motherland Rhythm Community and the Benkadi Project, who I met when she was touring the U.S. doing drum workshops.  Helen shared that her travels to West Africa taught her a similar lesson.  She told stories of how the villagers didn’t understand her inclination to spend time along as Westerners are apt to do.  They worried she was ill.  I have other friends whose travels took them out of the country to other cultures where time alone was thought of in the same way.

This lesson of the Gypsy Wild Woman to find blessings in connecting with others and even counting on others along the way feels innately good.  When I can put aside the part that thinks I need to play small and be totally self-sufficient, the giving feels soothing and healing.

This trip has brought out the giving in others as well (and that too can be a blessings….to be the giver).  I have had friends, family, and strangers contribute to my journey.  Sometimes it is with food or money, services, travel tips and personal stories.  Who am I to deny their giving….their opportunity to bless and be blessed.

So I am leaning into the giving.  I am soaking in the spirit of sharing.  I practice standing or sitting solidly in my body, connecting to the Earth, and taking in the goodness offered.

Journey of the Inner Wanna Be’s

Exploring the Lessons:  If you are curious about your Inner Wanna Be, begin asking it to share its wisdom with you.  Record it in some way, either in your journal, with a video or a blog post. If you feel like sharing, add it to the Inner Wanna Be page (at the bottom where the linky is.)  I would love for you to take an inner journey with me as I make the journey up the middle of the US with my Gypsy Wanna Be.

Confessions of a Gypsy Wanna Be

Gypsy Self Banner

When I was maybe 5 years old, I dressed as a gypsy for Halloween. It was my mother’s idea, but I loved it.  Somehow it expressed some aspect of my nature…. a little wild, very colorful, a tendency for the dramatic, with a sense of something mystical.  I held onto that gypsy child as I grew into a woman although often she has taken second fiddle to obligations of adulthood.

She emerges from my subconscious in subtle ways… bangle bracelets and dangle earrings, love of various cultures, and the need to shake my hips and tip my tush when I dance. One area of life the Gypsy-self has never really gotten to live out freely is my curiosity for travel.  I stay pretty close to home most of the time and even when I  travel, I am probably more cautious than many people.  But as I said in my last video, I am getting ready to embark on a three week adventure up Middle America and back again from Texas to Wisconsin to teach at Creatives Celebrating Sisterhood Art Retreat.

Setting aside three weeks for one event isn’t really my style, so I have been contemplating how to keep the Creativity Tribe home fires burning while away. I decided to do the trip up in style…gypsy wild woman style, that is!

That’s right, I am giving my Inner Wanna Be (my gypsy) an adventure.

During my trip, I am going to explore what it would be like if I gave license to that Bohemian spirit.  I will ask myself…  What would change from just traveling as plain ol’ Rachél (okay, so I am not that plain to begin with, but I am going to push it even further?  What of the Gypsy Wanna Be wishes to be expressed?  What keeps me from going there?

I am going to stretch myself to be courageous.

Now you may see me as a pretty courageous person. I am here on Creativity Tribe spinning my artsy magic all the time. But the truth is that everyone has room to stretch and grow.  Everyone has someplace they hold back that is just itching to bust out and stretch its big, powerful wings.  This trip crosses that sweet spot for me and it seems the Gypsy Archetype holds the key to moving past the fear. So that is what I am going to share.

But that isn’t the whole picture….and this is where the adventure gets good and juicy.  This is where the Creativity Tribe comes in.  I want to give YOU the same opportunity for growth and adventure that I am creating for myself.  I am inviting you to join me for a Journey of the Inner Wanna Be. Think of it as a creative event with sacred play as its medium.

journey with me

What is Journey of the Inner Wanna Be’s?

We all have parts of ourselves that wanna thrive and have the ability to lead our lives, our development of self, our experience of joy to a new level of fulfillment.  Sometimes those parts of ourselves sidetracked, scared, or even buried by a number of things.  But they show up occasionally, tapping us on the shoulder, asking to come out to play and if they are lucky, we have learned how to give them what they need.  Sometimes we need a hand though, a little encouragement, because stretching ourselves by being authentic is not just satisfying, it might be a bit scary.

I want you to take this journey with me.  I will be engaging one of my many Inner Wanna Be’s (that little girl who always dreamed of being a gypsy).  And I would love it if you would look inside and ask which of your Inner Wanna Be’s would like to go on a journey of self-discovery with me.  We have a few weeks to get ready for our adventure, and then, the world is ours!

Oh, but back to trip….

My Wisconsin destination takes me to the Creatives Celebrating Sisterhood Art Retreat at Lake Geneva where I am presenting a workshop that is near and dear to my heart, Passport to Dreams Come True.

Working on Workshops

what_I_Love_2

On Tuesday’s This Sense-sational Life post, I talked about the Sense of Choice and my shift from working for someone else to building a life around my dreams.  This week, my dreams are in front of me in a big way.  On Saturday I will be presenting at the South Western Unitarian Universalist Women’s Conference along with Jessica of Heath Roots.  I will also set up my art as a vendor.  What fun!

Whole Woman Workshop

Jessica and I are sharing our Whole Woman Workshop there.  During the event, we invite women to come into the circle of sisterhood and explore through dance, storytelling, and doll making the essence of who they are as a woman.  You know you love what you are doing when you just can’t wait to do the work in front of you….and that is the case with this workshop.  I will let you know how it goes.

Touch Drawing

Last week I taught a Touch Drawing workshop at the Art Center of Corpus Christi.  I had a wonderful blend of individuals coming together to explore what was a new technique for many of them.  I loved watching them wade slowing into the process of going inward and discovering what wished to be expressed with the hands.  Working with a new media or a new technique can force a Creative to step outside their routine and engage the actual process of being creative.  That can be an uncomfortable place, but on the other side of the fear we often discover something about ourselves that we had maybe forgotten….like what it feels like when we don’t give up, how we act in the face of uncertainty, and the joy of embracing curiosity.

This quirky woman began as a touch drawing of mine and grew into a mixed media piece.

I think it is inevitable that while we work on one kind of project our mind brings up other similar projects for us to toy with.  I love to take full advantage of those times.  They provide yummy ideas and energy to boost creativity.  This has definitely been the case with all the workshops I have been planning.  These two have led me to think about the workshop I am teaching at the Creatives Celebrating Sisterhood Retreat in Wisconsin this coming April.

Passport to Dreams Come True

The workshop I am teaching there is near and dear to my heart.  It began as a seed when I was working on my Masters in Counseling.  Passport to Dreams Come True.  It came out of my love of bookmaking, doll making, and helping others nurture their creative spirit.

Creatives Celebrating Sisterhood

Oh boy, do I have an exciting 2013 planned!  And one of the highlights is teaching at Creatives Celebrating Sisterhood Art Retreat.  The event is the weekend of my birthday, so I decided to do it up right and turn what could be a quick jaunt up to Wisconsin (from Texas, lol) into a leisurely drive-about. Yep, ROAD TRIP!  I can’t wait.

So my birthday wish is to meet lots of creatives there. Hint!  This is the perfect time to plan for it. Just give a little nudge to the Santa ….and all the little elves….. in your life.  In fact, we have done some of the work for you!

Just grab it and print it out…..easy, breezy!

I hope to see ya there!  April 17-19, 2013….It’s just around the corner!

For more details and to see a super cute video of me sharing my excitement about the event, head over the the Creatives Celebrating Sisterhood Art Retreat page.

Paint Mojo {Lotus Pond}

I have been sitting with my Paint Mojo Texas experience, letting myself gently make my way into a fuller understanding of the process and what it means to me.  One part of the weekend keeps standing out and is ready to be shared.

The second morning we were at Paint Mojo Texas, Tracy Verdugo, our teacher, took a walk out on the dirt roads of The Lotus Ranch.  After lunch, she asked us to join her for an excursion.  We blindly followed her, as we had all weekend, but instead of trustingly delving into the landscape of our imaginations through paint and brush, we made our way to a lotus pond.

As we wrapped our new sisterhood around the edge of the pond, we giggled like school girls.  The tiny frogs made their ways from lily pad to lily pad as we, one by one, shared what the weekend had been like for us.  Every woman had a different story, and every story felt like a square on a giant quilt that we all shared.  After only a few short days, we had found connections that were steeped in meaning, meaning that unfolded like magic in front of us.

Anyone can host or teach a painting retreat, but it takes a special team to put the mojo into a retreat. Tracy Verdugo brought a soulFULLness to the weekend that left me wanting for nothing.  Our hostess, Selah Gay approached the retreat as if it were her own personal masterpiece. She crafted her love of what she was doing into every detail.  It was exactly what a girl might dream of an art retreat being.

Now, that lotus pond……I returned at sunset on the last day just minutes before leaving.  The blue haze of twilight just strong enough to catch me before the sun went down. Over one shoulder, a glowing full moon, and just within ear shot the howls and hollers of a few coyotes and a pack of wild artist women settling in for an after party.  I wouldn’t be staying, but my heart was sure to linger even as I drove through the Texas Hill Country, making my way.

Coming soon…. images from the retreat and the ways this retreat has changed the way I think about life.

Art Every Day Month

Today’s AEDM offering comes out of a series of works I am doing around healing art.  I shared earlier in the month that I have been using little works of art as medicine for years.  On the adventure to embrace life fully, I have been working with the cards more often.  Today’s card will ultimately be sent to a doctor I have teamed up with to help me with wellness and longevity practices. (Don’t worry, I am in fine health, just wanting to keep it that way!)

An update on my wire dreamcatchers from yesterday.

I wore the earrings attached to the card (above) today and got invited by a local salon to sell them for the holiday season.  Told you, good mojo!

Art Every Day Month is a movement, inspiring artist around the blogosphere!  Head over and see what they are up to today!  Then, consider joining us.  It is a small act that makes a big different.  Creativity…….. engage!
