Gathering Creativity Tribe

When I sat down to think about where Creativity Tribe wished to grow in 2015, I just kept coming back to YOU.

Gathering Creativity Tribe!

blooming line 2

I usually pick one word to guide my year, but this year I picked two, one personal and one professional. I have been writing about creativity for years now.  This year I am leaning into the next word of my business title and focusing in on Tribe.  It’s my professional Word for the Year.

This is the time for gathering Creativity Tribe: the people, the connections, the reflecting to one another what we see when we look into the heart of someone who revers the powerful force that creativity plays in our lives.

That action of creating life, of sculpting our reality, of calling in something of the soul is at the heart of Creativity Tribe.

Takes Creatives to Build a Tribe

Another part of connecting with Creatives is offering a space for awesome people to discover other awesome people.  With that in mind, I have designed a page on the site that features creative blogs.  Faces of Creativity Tribe is a page with a linky showcasing close to 50 blogs.  There is definitely room for more!  Have a Creative Blog?  Jump over and connect!

I also have a Creativity Tribe Badge that creative bloggers can proudly post on their blog letting others know they identify themselves as a Creative.  Claim your creativity!

We are gathering Creativity Tribe on Facebook. Over 300 Creatives are part of our Creativity Tribe Facebook group.  I encourage them to share their art, creative process, thoughts on creative living, and support one another’s creative spirits!  Click the banner above to join!

Collaborative Posts

Within the Creativity Facebook Group you will find regular opportunities to join me in a blog post.  I toss over a post prompt, and the Tribe chimes in with their responses.  Then, I scoop up their comments and blog about it!

The first collaborative post explored tips the Creativity Tribe uses to Re-ignite their Creative Spirit.   Check back next week for Creativity Tribe’s words for the year.

Running Buffalo Journeys: Spiritual Adventures

wisdomkeeper banner

Sometimes at night as I am drifting off to sleep, I follow my imagination to Guatemala.  The space around me becomes green with plant life, alive with the sounds of monkeys and children laughing, in my hand waits a steamy cup of pure, ancient-sourced cacao.  Somehow I feel at-home in that dream even though I have never been to Guatemala.

I know part of that comfort comes from the connections I have with friends who have made Guatemala their home and the stories they tell of their adventures, both physical and spiritual.  Someday I will join them there.  In the meantime, I am planning and dreaming.

Today I want to invite you to join me on a virtual trip to the luscious  mountain highlands of Guatemala.  Our guides will be my dear friends and Creativity Tribe wisdomkeepers Aaron El León and Milena Worsham of Running Buffalo Journeys

Wisdomkeepers are those Creatives who know something about bringing creativity to life and life to our creativity….and make it part of their life craft to hold a space for sharing that wisdom with others.

So sit back, relax and enjoy the adventure.

Becoming Part of the Story

Aaron and Milena have been helping others connect with new life journeys through spiritual adventures in the Mayan heartland.  I had the opportunity to spend most of my Summer with them during a break they were taking in the states.  We enjoyed spinning energy about their tours and how they craft the journey to touch each person in a deeply significant way.  I love their process.  It is pure of heart and strong with loving intention.

My Creative Weekend

my creative weekend

 Some of my favorite memories…

I am walking the aisles in the cloth store, hands lovingly, curiously touching, eyes soaking in as many textures as the fingers explored.  Mom was looking through patterns.  Dreaming.  I wonder what wonder she will craft out of this sea color and delight.

Years later I sit in a corner of my childhood bedroom.  A spiral notebook with scratches of a poem rests on my knees. I turn it into a song after watching Loretta Lynn’s Coal Miner’s Daughter.  I want to share something meaningful from deep inside.  I yearn to express my world as Loretta did.  I want to sing big, with great feeling, and share myself with the world.

Rachel and Kim with Tucan

That’s me on the right…curly haired and bright smiled with my cousin and dear friend, Kim.

Middle of the night in my early twenties, I sit alone in the living room.  My husband is asleep and a grief about losing my mother rises up inside me.  He gets up at 4 a.m. to work.  I can’t get my head wrapped around the deep feelings welling up.  Something in me calls me to a college notebook.  I begin to write and then to draw.  A poem emerges.  Memories float back.  The grief subsides.  A gentle sense of my mother’s hands across the top of my head soothe me.  I head to bed and sleep peacefully.

Four adults sit around a table in the middle of a cafe. Music plays in the background, a Celtic band.  The conversation lulls then someone confesses to their disappointment in not having more art in their life.  Another chimes in, validates, commiserates.  I smile inside.  Reach for my satchel, pull out four small blank cards and a few pens.  Shared art begins.

These are some of my Creative Weekend memories.  Times when a break in my week reached out to support my desire to express myself, soothe myself, or connect with others and the world.   I could fill volumes with stories like this.  They are some of the highlights of my life.

creativity prompt

Make a memory with your Creative Spirit this weekend.  Set aside any preconceived notion that doing a creative  project takes too much energy or time.  Open to the possibility that it could make life stand still for awhile and help energize you.

Here are some ideas… Do a bit of double duty by making a hafto into an opportunity for creativity.  That lunch you have to cook, choose a new recipe, or plate the food with a bit of pizzazz!  That bath you like to take on Sunday evenings, why not add a few drops of essential oil and a lit candle near a small note card expressing a wish you have for the week to come.  Creativity heals, it crafts life, and helps us remember we are dynamic, expressive beings.  Invite a bit of Creative Spirit into your life  over the next several days. (Would love for you to come back and share what you did or use the comments to commit to something creative that is whispering to your heart!)

I love Fridays around here because it is my chance to spin some energy for the folks who have bravely claimed creativity as a way of life on the Faces of Creativity Tribe page (you can put yours in too).  I hope you will head over to their blogs for a bit of inspiration….let them know you are part of the Creativity Tribe.

  •  A Smile Maker: Teresa over at A Smile Maker is just that.  I had the pleasure of spending a few hilarious evenings with her during my trip to Wisconsin for the Creatives Celebrating Sisterhood Art Retreat.  Her site is delightful.  I especially love her Late Bloomers series.  I hope you will give her a visit.
  • Art, Love, & Joy is the on-line home of Wini Dougall.  Wini is an artist who does feel-good art and spins out lots of love in her blog posts.  Always a joy to visit her slice of blog heaven.  Make sure to check out her shop while you are there.  I have been eyeing one of her throw pillows personally!
  • Simply Celebrate is an inspiring site curated by Sherry Richert Belul.  Sherry is the host and organizer of a delightful event I have enjoyed taking part of for the last two years.  You can find my Plant a Kiss Day post (2012 and 2013).
  • Cat Athena Louise is a artist and free spirit whose art reflects her love of myth, fairytales, and shamanic traditions.  I consider her a dear, sweet friend and am delighted that she has connected with me here.

 Creatively yours…

My Dirty, Filthy Artsy Life

art journal 2

I have been getting my hands dirty with paint and marker, glue and glitter almost everyday.  It makes me feel alive!

Spirited Sprite

The drawing above was done during an early morning drawing session with a few little girls I was hanging out with before Art Camp.  They started talking about fairies and asked me to draw one.  This is my little Spirit Sprite.  She was the delight of the little artists and inspired a whole day’s worth of winged one art sketches by them.

This Summer has been filled with Art and Drama Camps, each day offering a chance to dig into my creativity with play and spontaneity.   All that art helped me realize I don’t share enough of my art with you, so I have created a page on the site that features different kinds of my work.  Some formal, some just doodles.  They are all from my heart.  I hope you will take a peek and let them inspire you to live a dirty, filthy artsy life.

Would you like to see my art?

Hop over and take a look!

Next Friday I will be sharing the finished Summer Solstice Journal Page.  And more Faces of Creativity Tribe.
