Sacred Cacao Ceremony

Sacred Cacao Ceremony. An invitation to tend to your sacred heart.

Sacred Cacao Ceremony

I’ve just come from guiding a sacred cacao ceremony. I playfully call it the Chocolate Temple Journey.  It was an intimate gathering.  Each individual came for their own personal reason. We each sat, sipping a cup of warm, rich chocolate made with sacred cacao from Guatemala. We shared what called us to explore our inner landscape during this particular gathering. And then, each of us gently opened ourselves to the see what aspect of life wanted to join our collective playtime for the evening.

Chocolate Temple Journal, reflections on sacred cacao and the inner templeCT Blog Line Page SeparatorThis Chocolate Temple Journal is a collection of my personal reflections on sacred cacao and the inner sanctuary of Self and Source.  I share some of my thoughts here to give you an idea of where the spirit of cacao can take us when we invite it to partner with us on a journey of self-inquire and self-discovery.

Excerpts from the Chocolate Temple Journal

The chocolate elixir was especially creamy tonight…and the cayenne pepper gave it a good kick! I remember thinking that it was as rich and silky as the deep ah-ha’s the group shared with me.  I remember thinking the circle of my cup felt like a tiny representation of the Universe…the Universe I live in and the Universe that exists inside of me.

Sacred Cacao Ceremony with Rachel Payne of Creativity Tribe

Big ideas often come after drinking cacao, and this sacred cacao ceremony was no different.

I felt clumsy in the beginning.  But in all actuality, that was perfect.  The group was small, made up half of cacao ceremony regulars and half of those new to the plant and the process.

I could sense excitement and a bit of discomfort in the group.  I think the discomfort was simply coming from walking into a new experience.  Even those who had come many times to sit with cacao had never come to a group soley guided by me.  I spontaneously found myself talking about this place we found ourselves in….this Unknowing. I felt Spirit guiding my sharing.

I dove in….

I confessed to feeling clumsy.  I confessed to feeling starkly aware that we were all moving into uncharted territory….especially those of us who were used to drinking cacao together for years in a circle guided by another who we all respected dearly and had gotten into a comfortable groove with.  I confessed to feeling nervous about showing off my own personal groove.

I felt naked….but calling myself out, transparently claiming my vulnerability felt empowering.  I laughed and boldly stated that my intention for the night was to lean into my experience and courageously be as clumsy and awkward as I needed to do what I felt guided to do for the group.

They all laughed with me.  I gave myself permission to showed up flawed and authentic, and as I did, I felt the group shift.  They leaned into the Mystery of the evening with me.

And the Mystery was beautiful.

Stolen Sharpie Revolution and the Little Cat Who Could

Schatzie Studio 404My day started in a bit of a funk.  I don’t know where it came from but when I woke up, it was in my face enough to make me close my eyes again.  I began thinking about what our home had been like in the years past when my hubby and I shared our bed with our cat Schatzie.  She was our bestie beastie, our forever furry. She had been with us exactly 7 years when she passed this Summer.  The first month after she died, I missed her terribly.  Then I picked myself up and have been scooting along in my new normal.  But today, my heart was aching.

A few years into having her, we discovered she would come to me when I was singing.  Honestly, I think she thought that sound coming out of me meant I was hurt, and she was checking on me!  I developed a song just for her after the Ritchie Valen’s song, “Oh, Donna”.

Schatzie Collage Glow

I have a kitty and Schatzie is her name,
Once she loved me I would never be the same.

I would sing it, then announce her arrival with my best emcee voice….Ladeeeez and Gentaaaaaahmen, please welcome to the stage, Mizzzz Schatzie Payne!  She would hop up on the bedroom pillow, and we would all fall asleep in a pile.

So this morning as I was thinking of her, I began to sing it for the first time since her little memorial service.  But I got choked up enough to stop, knowing she couldn’t come to the big stage in our bed if I sang.  And….I fell back to sleep.

My dreams were wild but felt beautifully magical.

I awoke to quick, hard footsteps coming up the stairs to my bedroom.  Running.  And then they stopped outside the door.  I was on alert.  No body runs in our house, really.

The door opened and my husband excitedly approached me with his cell phone in hand.  He was sharing Alex Rekk’s Kickstarter Video for the Fifth Edition of her book Stolen Sharpie Revolution.  This book has been with us about as long as Schatzie had.  Eric is a Zine maker, and I bought the book for him one of our first Christmas’s together.  Alex is a household word ’round Creativity Tribe Studio!

Eric Stolen Sharpie Revolution

I wiped the sleep from my eyes, sat up, and set my grief aside.  The video started with energizing music, narration by Alex, and pictures of her book in different scenarios.  And then…there on the screen, from the World Wide Web, was our own Super Star Kitty, Schatzie, sitting with our copy of Stolen Sharpie Revolution 2.  Mizzzz Schatzie Payne had come to the stage after all!

Alex had asked for images of her book being used in every day life.  As it happens Schatzie loved to sit on Eric’s zine collection.

After watching the video, Eric and I marveled.  We had both been missing her especially hard today.  And she found a way to affirm ……what? (as I am typing this, I am trying to put my finger on what she was trying to affirm….that we are still connected….that life goes on after death…. that what we had was as important to her as it is to us.  And through my headphones that were meant to block out the noise of the tv in the next room, comes a song by India Arie….I Am Light. I have never heard it, but it is blowing my mind in this instance.)

I am Light India Arie

And she found a way to affirm we are light…and we are more than the body, more than than cat and human, one life form “owning” another.  We were light together. Divinity defined, God on the inside, a star, a piece of it all.  Light.

Glow Cat Creativity Tribe

We are joining the other SSR lovers in supporting Alex and dedicating our support to Schatzie.  Seems fitting.  If you would like to see Schatzie and/or support Alex, head over to her Kickstarter.  Schatzie is the first cat in the video….among many cats who make an appearance.

And to Alex, if you happen to be reading this, we just never know what our message as Creatives is going to say to another or how our daring to share what our heart has to express will touch the heart of another.  Thanks!

Sacred Cacao Highlights: First Time

Events

Sacred Cacao Circles

I am excited to begin offering face-to-face personal development work with ceremonial grade cacao.  My first public gathering will be in conjunction with a Red Tent Event at the end of August.  As a lead up to event, I want to share stories of my cacao journey with you.

My first time to sit with cacao was during a time just before Creativity Tribe was fleshed out as a website, so I am starting us off with a look back to July 2012. Originally posted at Art of Collecting Yourself, my first blog.

Please look for a series of posts following this one that are designed to get us all in the mood for a bit of chocolate, spiritual loveliness.

Details for my first public ceremony and the Red Tent Event associated can be found in the EVENTS section in the menu above.

Sacred Cacao Highlights: First Time

July 23, 2012:  A Band of Gypsies

This weekend a load of traveling creatives crashed in various corners of my house: couch, floor, studio. (I want to give credit to my dear friend Irene Jaan for coining the phase Travel Creatives which so appropriately describes this Band of Gypsies I call my friends.)

Travel Creatives

We had all just come from a Sacred Cacoa Ceremony. Yep, I am letting my freak flag fly a bit here. Being a creative, you have to go where your creativity leads you, and lately mine has been expressing itself through my spiritual life.

We met in a little chapel I have passed by a thousand times but had never been in. The Chapel of Spiritual Light is on a triangular strip of land nestled between two busy streets , as if the city had grown up around it but it was courageously standing its ground. With a wooden frame reminiscent of old country churches, I found it quaint and unpretentious environment.

Take off your shoes and come on in….that was the way we were greeted, my sweetheart and I.  But we couldn’t get our shoes off quick enough. One after the next, we were taking in hugs and glowing smiles. One foot half way out of the first shoe, hug and smile. Hop on that foot to release the next shoe, hug and smile. Barefoot, hug and smile.

I walk through the door to the meeting area, a sanctuary with thick pile carpet that reached up to cradle each step. A circle of people, there, some long-time friends, some new and dear, others familiar faces, and even a few strangers…not strangers for long.

As we looked across the room at the symbol in a stained glass work, we recognized it as the symbol Eric and I had created for our wedding ceremony. For some, it is considered the Medicine Wheel or Odin’s Cross, for others, they might associate it with the astronomical symbol Earth. It had several layers of meaning for us. All more personal than religious. With three days left til we celebrated our 7th wedding anniversary (which actually happens to be today….July 23, 2012), we felt it was an affirmation that we were in the right place.

Once we got settled in, I looked over and realized there was a huge stock pot filled with a warm chocolate drink. That’s when the smell hit me. Mmmmmm, yes, chocolate.

Keith, The Chocolate Shaman, invited us to get our cup and add as much or as little honey as we wanted. The chocolate looked like glistening fudge in the cup, thicker and much darker than the hot chocolate most of us are accustomed to drinking. The honey was beautiful. I had been off sweeteners other than whole fruit for a week which made the addition of honey to the super dark chocolate taste like a little bit of heaven.

Soon after that, The Chocolate Shaman shared the kind of strength and intensity this pure cacao harnessed.  The chocolate most of the world consumes (you know, the big names like Hersey’s, Cadbury and Lindt), according to the Chocolate Shaman, are missing 80-99% of the beneficial compounds that can be found in the older varieties of chocolate. Processing and hybridizing depletes the cacao of so much of its essential goodness.

Keith brings the chocolate from Guatemala where he has made his home for around 17 years. He has a special relationship with the cacao plant and has connected with some of the indigenous tribes in Guatemala who remember how to use the plant for medicine of the spirit.

We began drinking the mixture. I listened to my body for how much it wanted. It was delicious. Darker than any I had ever tasted. Sweet and bitter blended with a kind of warm, silkiness that feels like love. Okay, so perhaps that sounds like I am exaggerating or using poetic license, but the fact is the evening felt loving. Self-loving and other loving.

I can’t help but think that it might have something to do with the jolt of energy that your heart and mind get from both the intense chocolate and the meditation Keith shares. It’s a rush… subtle and substantial all in the same breath. As he talked, I could feel my heart beat increase. My body wanted to move. I began to rock back and forth slightly. The kind of rocking that comes from your chest when you hear a groovy beat. I wasn’t tripping. I wasn’t on some crazy drug induced high.  But my mind felt clear and I felt high on life.

Keith explained that the cacao will encourage spiritual growth. It invites you to look at where you might grow and then helps assists you as you choose to go there.  That might sound very far off or far out for some. It comes from the belief that certain things have a spirit to them. Plants, stones, animals, the Earth. I decide to play along. I decided to act as if….and see where that led.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I chose to cultivate my curiosity, one of the freedoms I enjoy with being a Creative Spirit.
I am glad I did.
As for my Band of Gypsies {Keith, Brendan, Milena and Aaron} they are each on their own adventure now.  Some headed back to Guatemala, others spending time with family.  I am grateful to have their energy floating around the house. Feels good. Oh, and I nabbed a bit of that yummy chocolate waiting for the next ceremony….Creativity Tribe style.
Sacred Cacao Ceremony: A Red Tent Event
Cacao Red Tent 2
 My Journey with Sacred Cacao
Two years ago, I stepped into my first Sacred Cacao Circle.  The circle was ripe with possibility…..and so was I.   I was greeted there by some of my dearest friends who had experienced cacao in the Highlands of Guatemala with a man many of them referred to as the Chocolate Shaman….also known as Keith.  He was there that night, in the little city in Texas that I call home.  The Chocolate Shaman had come to us.
As I drank my first cup of warm cacao, I felt my heart open.  My body felt relaxed and alive all at the same time.  Keith made his way to sit with each of us, encouraged us to work with one another, to simply hold space, and not try to heal or fix.  He was showing us that we each had what we needed already.  We didn’t need someone to swoop in and make it all better.  We could do that and the Cacao would help.
The Cacao opens the heart ….literally oxygenates the blood.  And if you think in spiritual terms, you may also feel it working to open the figural heart or energetic heart as well.
I bought my first batch of cacao that night.  It is very different than any chocolate you can buy in the store.  It has properties that aren’t refined out of it.  I began drinking it on my own and with friends.  Keith came back through a month or so later, and I knew my intention for that circle was to gain his blessing for working with cacao in circles not much different than his.  I walked away knowing that Cacao work would be an important part of my life journey.
I have been using Cacao weekly as part of a group intensive held by RevShar from Lucid Waking.  The work has been deep and cleansing.  This year I have head several private Sacred Cacao circles.  My calling is to hold a circle open for those who wish to connect with their heart.  The Cacao just can’t help but open us up there.  Although, I will say, it will not take us where we do not wish to go.  It isn’t forceful like that.  It works better with a slight smile and the energy of letting go or doing nothing.  Then it seems to just flow you into a new understanding of yourself and Existence.
An Invitation to Tend to Your Sacred Heart
Recently, the desire to share Cacao with others has become even stronger.  As I have been enjoying my journey with the local Red Tent gathering, I decided to bring the Sacred Cacao out with these ladies.  Red Tent is open to any woman.
Running Buffalo Journeys: Spiritual Adventures
wisdomkeeper banner
Sometimes at night as I am drifting off to sleep, I follow my imagination to Guatemala.  The space around me becomes green with plant life, alive with the sounds of monkeys and children laughing, in my hand waits a steamy cup of pure, ancient-sourced cacao.  Somehow I feel at-home in that dream even though I have never been to Guatemala.
I know part of that comfort comes from the connections I have with friends who have made Guatemala their home and the stories they tell of their adventures, both physical and spiritual.  Someday I will join them there.  In the meantime, I am planning and dreaming.
Today I want to invite you to join me on a virtual trip to the luscious  mountain highlands of Guatemala.  Our guides will be my dear friends and Creativity Tribe wisdomkeepers Aaron El León and Milena Worsham of Running Buffalo Journeys
Wisdomkeepers are those Creatives who know something about bringing creativity to life and life to our creativity….and make it part of their life craft to hold a space for sharing that wisdom with others.
 So sit back, relax and enjoy the adventure.
Becoming Part of the Story
Aaron and Milena have been helping others connect with new life journeys through spiritual adventures in the Mayan heartland.  I had the opportunity to spend most of my Summer with them during a break they were taking in the states.  We enjoyed spinning energy about their tours and how they craft the journey to touch each person in a deeply significant way.  I love their process.  It is pure of heart and strong with loving intention.
Seeking Sanctuary {Building a Self-Love Altar}
Seeking Sanctuary
Seeking Sanctuary in the Self
Seeking Sanctuary in the Self is a deepening of a practice I have been cultivating for years.  It is about falling deeply in love with who I am and trusting in myself.  Right now it is an organic process that pulls in art, meditation, intuitively working with my essential oils and crafting my relationships with other so that they honor what is important to me.  Selfish?  No, I feel like that is something due each of us.  Including those I am in relationship with.
This month I will be sharing some inkling from my Seeking Sanctuary practice.  I thought Sunday would be a good day to offer it up.
Join Me in Seeking Sanctuary
One of my favorite ways to focus my thoughts is to create a space in an area of my home.  I think of that area as an altar.  I approach the idea of an altar in the same way I would a painting or drawing….as a creative project… like an installation.   I cleanse the space with essential oils.  For example, I like to make a spritzer bottle my favorite lavender and peppermint in a bit of water to spray in the space.  Then I gather a few items that symbolize what I want to invite into my life or a that hold a quality that I wish to cultivate.
Water Angel PS2
I often include something that I can do.  Light a candle, say a prayer, apply an oil that I associate with self-love, draw a card from a deck, meditate, read or add to a journal that highlights my journey.  An interactive altar makes it feel like you are in relationship with that theme you are exploring.
Other objects might include, a stone that symbolized what you are working on, a figuring, or picture, poem or saying, a candle in a color that makes sense for the intention or that just intuitively feels right, a vision board or art card.
I mindfully place the objects in a little nook or cranny.  A table top or shelf work well too.  I intuitively let the space evolve until they create an arrangement that is please.  That then becomes a focus for mediation or can be a part of my daily routine.
Surprise Gifts from the Universe + A Freebie from Me
Surprise Gifts from Universe
I have decided to engage a little experiment with the Universe this month.  I am asking it to open up the field of possibility and shower me with gifts, and I am expecting that, just as I might know with strong certainty that a light switch will give me light, the Universe will open up to what I need and desire.
My experiment in inspired by E Squared by Pam Grout.
It is an easy, enjoyable, fascinating read!
Surprise Gifts from the Universe: Everyday a Party!
I set up my blog post so that I could easily just slip this portion in at the end of the day, sharing what some of my discovered gifts were.  Here is what I witnessed…..
  1. Thoughtfulness: I woke up this morning to my honey cooking me breakfast.  He made sure to make mine without gluten.  Lucky girl, me!
  2. Connections:  Today, a friend I met in a chat group years and years ago, Jordan, shared on her blog, Creating My Soul Power, how I have inspired her through sharing my creative journey here.  Interestingly enough, her creativity inspired me enough that I recently shared her story on my Creativity Booster Pack Mini E-course.  (More about that in a bit.)  I love how our gifts trickle through life touching people….often with us never knowing it.  But my Gift from the Universe is that today I got see that my gifts touched another… whose story I hope will touch you.
  3. Gratitude: Out of the blue, I got a sweet “thank you” from a dear friend who shared her heart with me and offered her gratitude for me in her life.
  4. Confirmation:  For the last bend in the journey that was my day, some friends I really wanted to hang out with invited my hubby and I over to visit.  It was late, but we decided to go.  Once we got there we threw around some ideas of what we might do…. some art cards maybe (nah, not tonight), just chat and catch up (sounds good)…. and then, hubby suggested a movie (everyone was in!) We looked through their collection and came across The Last Mimsy.  YES!  I said…. strongly pulled to that one.  I want to watch that…. forgetting that I had seen it when it first came out.  As the movie’s story unfolded, I realized that a big theme was to listen to the messages we get from the Universe.  Wow!  Another gift.  The Universe wanted ME to know that inviting it to share Its big gifts with me was exactly the path I was supposed to follow.
Creativity Booster Pack Mini E-course
I am so SUPER excited to share with you my brand spankin’ new Creativity Booster Pack.  I have put together a collection of my 13 favorite booster actions, a MP3 with detailed suggestions to bring each booster to life, and a guided mediation to help you connect with your creative spirit.
I hope you will head over for my free gift.  I really put lots of love and energy into, wanting it to bring creativity to your life and life to your creativity!
Angels & Faeries Week: Power Animals
Angel Week 4
Welcome to Angels and Faeries Week!  I am celebrating the countdown to the grand opening of Angels In My Studio 2013 by sharing some of my favorite winged, spirited, and energetic artwork. Angels In My Studio 2013 is a 5 month online class that goes to that space where art and mystery, creativity and imagination meet.  As part of the art course, each week you will be invited to explore angelic imagery through art and guided meditations.
Featuring Power Animal Art
When I was a toddler, my parents gave me a stuffed animal, a small red fox. I didn’t play with baby dolls then, I just wanted my fox. What was it about that little fox that felt so comforting? Was it the bright vital color, the softness of its fur? Was it the sweet face?
Over time, the color faded, the fur got loved off, the nose tore, and only one eye remains (yes, I still have it!) I think it felt alive to me, like a friend and a protector.
Over the course of my life, various animals took places of value for one reason or another. I kept seeing them pop up here or there, perhaps I dreamed of them, felt the need to draw them, or spent time fascinated by them more than others.  As I got older, I began referring to them as my power animals because it felt like I was learning from them, taking comfort in them, and that they helped me stay connected to the wild, uninhibited part of myself.
The idea of a power animal comes from the spiritual traditions of many cultures, especially those that are more nature oriented. We may think of them purely as part of a shamanic belief system, but I would bet that most people can relate to feeling close to a certain animal. Perhaps thinking back, you may find an animal calling out to you which has meaning and connection. Could that be your power animal?
CTImages013_zps0231d871
Grandmother Butterfly invites eyes of transformation.
My power animals often show up as drawings in my art journals with messages of support, guidance, or shared wisdom. Sometimes the drawings arise out of some scribble or doodle that takes on the shape of the animal, sometimes it comes from a meditation or dream. However it comes, I try to explore it and see if it has any applications in my life.
Owl Art
Owl sees that even in the dark there is light.
One of the most powerful dreams I have ever had involved a raven. The night before I started graduate school to study counseling, I dreamed I was going to a magical school where I was learning to be a healer and where I would have to learn to fly and protect myself. Beside me was the raven. It was as much my teacher as the wise woman heading the class.  In the dream, we took to the skies. It was invigorating and felt like my inner world was letting me know just how committed I should be to my outer studies. That next morning when I arrived at class, a black bird sat outside the door of the building. It looked at me, and I couldn’t help but wonder if it had dreamed about me the night before.
A Guide for my Journey
Whether or not we believe in the actual existence of animal spirit guides isn’t necessarily the important lesson to take away with us from this post.  For me, life is full of so much mystery that if I had to verify everything  before I found value it in, I might live a boring, unfulfilled life.  Instead, I choose to let go of believing and hold onto playing with the idea, symbolism and stories that want to unravel in my imagination….and my heart.
Featuring My Tea Cup Angel
Tea Cup Angel
This little angel lives in my studio.  She was done as part of an art challenge hosted by my dear friend and Flying Lessons classmate Kathleen Conrad of A New Creation and Upcycle and Remix.  Kathleen and I roomed together at the Art Retreat in Wisconsin.  She is a sweetheart for sure!
Kathleen and Rachel
Kathleen invited us during the challenge to use tea bags in a creative way.  I used mine to honor the anniversary of my mother’s passing.  For more of that story, visit the original post about this project on my previous blog Art of Collecting Yourself.
A Cup Full of Gratitude: Tea Bag Momma
An excerpt from that post in 2011:  This cup forms the base of an art doll I created over the last couple of weeks to honor my mom.  It has a skirt made of 21 red zinger hibiscus tea bags (the pink color comes from the tea, to gold, I added).  The tea bag in the center of the cup is black tea…the kind mom made sun tea out of in the Summer.  The gold and pearls are to help remind me to treasure the present moment as much as I do the past.  The tag of the tea bag has been made into a tiny heart shaped journal.  It is blank to remind me that my future is wide open and not strictly defined by my past…but certainly influenced by it.
The doll is constructed of wire (one of my favorite mediums to work with).  Her face is a watch, altered with a drawing.  The drawing looks more like me than it does her, but I am okay with that…reminds me that we are much alike.  Hanging inside her chest is a glass vile filled with garnets and a note that reads love.  And in her hands, she holds a nest with three eggs representing to me the three phases of womanhood.  As I move through each phase, I not only learn about myself, but learn more about my mother.  Kind of magical.
The doll makes me so very happy and helps make this day extra special. My mom was the first artist I ever knew.  She painted oil landscapes and taught me the importance of engaging the creative.  I don’t know who I would be without having had her influence in my life.  Luckily, I don’t have to figure that out.
Look for more angel and faerie art here tomorrow.
Featuring My Spirit Dolls
spirit doll
One of my favorite ways to find inspiration is within my own art.  Often I will do a doodle, sketch, drawing, or painting and some element will jump out at me.  That then inspires exploration of the element.  I might take that into a poem, a new drawing, a sculpture, or song.
The doll above is made of cardboard, tissue paper, and mixed media.  She is in-process.  There are a few more elements to be added but I am letting them simmer.  She originally came out of a drawing I was doing after a conversation that I had with my friend Kakali about near death experience.  I love that she is looking within.  When I hold her in my hand, she inspires me to look within myself.
This is a poem that bloomed from looking within.
Gratitude Poem
I absolutely love how one work of art has inspired another which inspired another.  Perfect!
