Supernova Woman

The Full Moon was waiting for me when I went outside this evening.  It surprised me.  I had been waiting for her, but I got busy with life.  Before I knew it she was there, hanging out on the edge of the neighborhood, wanting to play.  This is my first full moon after the end of my Touch the Moon e-course.  Offering that class was intense in the best way. It encouraged me to show up daily for several months and be in touch with that celestial beauty in the sky.  In turn, I was more in touch with myself.

So here I am, a full moon in the sky and so much on my heart.  As the end of the year grows closer, I feel the pull of potential and possibility in the new year.  My mind is expanding like a supernova. Exploding with ideas.  And each idea heads out into the distance to connect with another dreamer, creating a project here, a circle of commonality there.  Behind the scenes I hold my arms out like a grand spider weaving together all the projects, whip stitching this hope to that thread of stardust, stretching my heart out to cradle it all.  It is scary, exhilarating and illuminating all at the same time.

I am SuperNova Woman! ZoomZoomZoom…. She-Bang! Bathed in moonlight.

Tonight’s full moon practice is inspired by one of the projects that comes out of that explosion of possibility.  The project, which is a collaboration with my friend Jessica of Hearth Roots, isn’t quite ready to be unveiled for the world, but I am ready for it.  The full moon feels like the right time to begin it.

And so my practice tonight is to move my body. To listen and then move.

And then listen some more.

Simple, but powerful.

Today’s AEDM offering is about that same kind of energy. The lotus blooms in stillness.

It came out of a meditation. Expansive lotus with palm open to the golden heart.

New Traditions

Remember when Thanksgiving was simple? You would get up early, waking to the smell of all the regular holiday favorites wafting down the hall, the sound of plates descending from their cabinet dwellings, and remember it was Turkey Day?  Turkey Day!  You had been waiting for a month for the time off from school, time to hang out with your cousins, time out in the backyard, the warm sun taking the chill off the newly cool air.  Then Mom would call everyone inside.  You found your place at the kids’ table, eyeballing the black olive plate and deviled eggs….and yes, the turkey, dressing, sweet potatoes, and all that jazz.  A prayer.  A sip of Aunt Joyce’s sweet iced tea. And then weighing that plate down with your favorites.  One by one you went around, each person saying something they were grateful for when what you really wanted to focus on was what was on your plate. But by the end of the day, you would collapse in some soft corner into a turkey coma, your heart and tummy both satiated, both filled with gratitude for the day and your life.

Years have passed, so have some family members, the food on the table comes sprinkled with statistics about how much water you will might retain, weigh you might gain.  You feel the strain of a Black Friday early morning sale calling. Suddenly Christmas is at your door and the pressure is on to make this the perfect year.

Gratitude seems oh-so-far away. You know you should feel it, but does it have to feel so forced?…forced through a wall of stress. How in the world do you get back?

Several years ago I asked myself the same question.

My answer….new traditions.

This year I was excited to add to the my personal holiday traditions by joining Sherry Richert Belul of Cherry Blossom Soup for the New Black Friday Love List.  I knew for several days that I wanted to participate, but couldn’t figure out who I wanted to make my list for. I decided to let the day lead the way.  When Friday came around, I got sick.  I recovered quickly and then my hubby got pretty sick.  Spending my time those couple of days after Thanksgiving caring for myself and then for my honey, my thoughts went to the team of helpers we turn to when we need a hand with our health.  We are both doing well now (whew), but I am remembering that when we are truly in need, we never worry about being alone.

We currently have three special health care providers we use. One is a specialist and two are chiropractors.  Each has helped us out of some difficult times or sent us down roads towards better living.  My Love List this year is for each of them.  I created a card, made prints and tucked our gratitudes inside.  They will go into the mail this afternoon.  I think we often spend so much time getting down on the medical profession that we forget the gifts they give us.  This year I am especially thankful for them.

I want to thank Sherry for sharing her new holiday tradition with us.  It is one I look forward to incorporating year after year.

Art Every Day Month UPDATE

I have loved this new practice of being creative every day. I am looking forward to the end of the month only so I can look back and take stock of what has come of it.  One of the most dear acts of creation has been the new friends I have made and the new blogs I have discovered. What an amazing group of people….and still so many to explore.

Make sure if you have stopped by and you think you might like to “join” the festivities around here that you grab the badge and connect with us by leaving your blog address on the Faces of Creativity Tribe Wall.  The more the merrier!

Making the Site Right

Thanksgiving day was slow for me.  It started off with a quick but yummy meal with my hubby.  Most of the family was scattered this year, so it was just the two of us and lots of phone calls to loved ones.  After lunch it was time for him to go into work.  That left me and the cats hanging at the house.  I think in years past I might have gotten a bit down about that.  But this year I was happy to have some time to myself to indulge in my biggest obsession…. Creativity Tribe.

Lots of plans are bubbling up around here. With the new year just around the corner, I want to roll out my best offerings.  I have recently wrapped up my studies for my coaching certification.  This, added to my degree in counseling and love of art, will put me in a place to do the work I have been wanting to do for a long while.  Sitting on the edge of a dream and then dipping dip a toe into the water feels amazing.  It is nearly all I think about.  It must be love!

So I spent the whole afternoon tweaking the site.  I added a few pages, rearranged a few pages, made some new graphic,s and did some writing….and more dreaming.

Allow me to show you around.

To the tabs across the top I added new info….

I would LOVE for you to add your site  to the Faces of Creativity Tribe.

I love getting to share the blooming of this dream with you.

I hope your day was lovely and your weekend filled with FEEL GOOD moments!

My plans tomorrow?  Hitting the antique and junk shops with my family to look for that one item that just begs to be repurposed, altered, or given a good spit-shine.  It’s our Black Friday tradition.  I will also be participating in The new Black Friday tradition of writing a  Love List as a gift for someone. Fun!

The Creative Cycle

The last month has been RICH with creative experience.

First an art retreat.

Paint Mojo Texas with Tracy Verdugo

Then, I jumped into Art Every Day Month and began pumping out art for myself, my friends, and two art shows

that I finished this weekend.

At the end of this creative streak…I remembered the wisdom my friend Gail shared with me about the creative process.  I want to share that nugget with YOU.

This process can be an essential element to safe-guarding your creative momentum. It can be scary to take a break because we think it means we might turn the creativity OFF.  But my experience is that it conditions us for more creativity.

For me, I was able to jump back in with a new energy and a new enthusiasm for my work.

This new piece (still in process) is being created for a show coming up in a few weeks.

Here’s what it is about:  Is 2012 the End of Times? Doomsday? Armageddon? Well, if this is indeed “The End” my friend, K Space Contemporary has a “Final Countdown” for you! “The Apocalypse Show” is a huge group exhibition of artists from all across Texas and features their unique takes on the end of the world scenario. It’s also K Space’s 5th Anniversary this year so please come down, experience a fantastic show and help us party like it’s “1999”! If this is “The End of the World As We Know It”, you won’t want to miss possibly the last show ever!!! It’s going nuclear!

I started the new piece today, using the techniques I learned in Paint Mojo but using death, chaos, destruction, renewal, and resilience as the focus for my work.

The Beginning of the Process

Double Feature Weekend

I had a great weekend.  It started with a trunk show at Feather’s Beauty Lounge where my friends Amy and Charlotte set up with me for a great little artists’ corner in the mani-pedi room. Hey, our art matches that nail polish!

My dreamcatcher jewelry made a special appearance.

The next day I set my table up at the Farmers’ Market with a painting station beside it. I painted all day long, creating small wooden canvases to which I will eventually add wire hangers dressed with beads.

I even got a bit of help with my wooden pieces.

ADORABLE!

I went back to painting today. These little pieces are addictive.

City Chic {Long Way Home}

One of my favorite past times is to spend a few minutes on either side of a trip downtown to explore the city.  I have lived in the same town most of my life.  The downtown was a place we went where I was very young to do a bit of shopping, but much of the posh department stores moved into the malls across town.  The downtown began to get run down.  In high school, the mayoral race focused on whether or not to revive downtown. By the time I graduated from college, the artists had moved in.  A lone coffee called Crazy Ladies was home to the artists, musicians, neo-hippies, and few wandering spirits.  A few lofts became the seats of philosophical think-tanks of the day.  A friend reported about that time that they had heard once the artists move into the downtown it would be a decade for it to start thriving again. Well, a decade has passed and sure enough…new life.

However, there are definite remnants of the tough times.  And those places become like archaeological sites for me and my camera. Sometimes I find something old made new to me as I discover parts of my hometown I never knew existed; other times, I find something I thought was only a long-ago memory.  In either situation, I feel as if I find a bit of myself in these crumbled places made new by my thriving interest in them.

Here are a few shots taken  today on a detour downtown.

Until next time, take….the long way home!

Checking IN about Checking OUT

Oh, how I love being creative!  For me it is the essence of my life.  I don’t know what a day would look like without some sort of creative act or thought.  I am a Creative at my core.  So diving into my studio so fiercely the last several days has felt rewarding.

I am getting ready for a trunk show tomorrow and an arts and crafts market the day after. Needless to say I won’t be sitting computer side sharing my creative sparks…..although I wish I could.  Instead, I am going to lovingly practice checking out for a few days while I do my thing.  When I can I will update my Facebook page.

Speaking of Facebook, I was so excited today to see I have 414 likes.  Not so much because that’s a bunch of people (hey!!! that IS a buncha people!), but because 414 is my lucky number. Woooohooo!  I know it won’t stay there long, the Creativity Tribe is growing by leaps and bounds which is great because I have lots of plans for us.  More about that later (so stay tuned).

Click on this button to keep in touch with Creativity Tribe on Facebook.

Before I wrap up, how about a peek at the chicks I have been working on…..yah?  The pic is straight off the studio table.

Love these guys….gunna be hard to let them fly!

Giving Heart

Yesterday I wrote about this yearning I had to give more mindfully this year and to give in new ways.  Then, I turned around and found a beautiful affirmation of giving reflected to me by a dear friend.  I feel extremely blessed to have a very special circle of women who have been by my side as we have together discovered the exquisite nature of being a woman.  Milena Worsham of Running Buffulo Journeys is one of those special ladies.

Our circle began forming about ten or so years ago.  We were all coming into our thirties or would be before long and were on fire with a desire to build a unique community. More than anything, I think we wanted a place in our small-ish South Texas town where we could practice being the grand creatures we were destined to become.  We each found our way to a center on the edge of downtown and one by one opened shops that circled around a courtyard.  Milena  had The Lotus Cup.  Irene Jaan who shares as the  had a shop called Yin Yang Fandango that specialized in amazing clothes, jewelry, and musical instruments with a world vibe.  Jessica of WildWood Naturals and I shared a groovy movement studio called Creative Spirit Studio that was connected to my massage business.  Together, along with the amazing community of people we served, we found our footing as women.

Sometimes, though,  finding your footing only comes from falling on your ass.  (Sorry for the crassness, but it is true.)  From that vantage point you get a real feel for what you want in life.  I think in one way or another, we all ended up on the floor.  I know I certainly did.  But the beautiful part to this story was that none of us stayed down.  One thing about practicing living as a grand creature is you learn to be resilient.  One by one, we reinvented ourselves.  But we have never let go of those bonds and have never stopped reflecting to one another the dynamic essence we saw in one another.

That circle of women and the group of Creatives who arrived to help usher in a celebration of creativity and expressiveness were the ones who set the foundation of The Creativity Tribe for me.  In my mind, they are the elders of this tribe.  They are out in the world doing amazing things, all of them creative and filled with loving intent.  I am so proud to be OF them.  The work I do here is about holding a space for others to discover their own seeds of possibility, to step into their big, wild dreams and live from authenticity.  Today’s gift from Milena was a very sweet message to her circle on Facebook of the work she saw me doing.  It was a gift.

Who in your life is living from a place of possibility, authenticity, wildness, or resilience?  Let them know in some small, quiet act.  Let’s start giving/gifting to one another and start looking for the places where our gifting comes back to bless us.  And if you would,  drop a note here to the Creativity Tribe about how this project touches your life.

Make More Art from the Heart

It’s been a whirlwind day.  I started by creating a care package for a dear friend who is going into the hospital tomorrow.  I created a few coloring pages for her with small poems circling around them, threw in a few black and white copies of my favorite drawings and a new zine my husband drew up last month.  I tucked inside one of my dreamcatchers and a few notes from some shared friends. Not long after that, my hubby and I drove out to meet her and her hubby. First I shared the care package, then we headed to dinner. It was a great visit.

I have been thinking a lot about sharing.  It sounds like a no-brainer. It was one of those lessons we have been learning since before we were potty trained.  Share your toys….share your spot in the front seat….share where you bought those fabulous shoes….share your mind, your money, your heart.  Sometimes I am better at sharing than others.  I admit it!

But recently I have been feeling the benefit of a few powerful sharing moments.  About a year ago my hubby and I gave a friend a gift. It wasn’t for Christmas or birthday, it was given because someone gave us a gift that we were choosing to share.  Then about six months ago the family we gave our gift to, gave us something totally unexpected.  Their surprise gift got tucked away during our travels and a portion of it was found in my studio yesterday.  It included an incense burner, a bit of charcoal, and amber resin.  This morning I lit the charcoal and dropped the amber on it.  The smoke-filled the house and permeated my clothes.  It is a sweet, rich smell that made me extremely happy.  It is, in fact, my very favorite smell.  The gratitude for the gift reminded me of the long chain of giving that had brought it into my life.  From someone to me, from me to another, from that other back to me.

As I am looking at the upcoming holidays, I want to remember how good giving feels.  I want to connect with the giver in me and give that part of me space to explore new frontiers in sharing.

Speaking of sharing, let me share how I ended my day….making art in the studio.  I have trunk show at Feather’s Beauty Lounge this weekend.  My focus today……why, feathers, of course!  A few owls in the works and a few chickadees.

Art Making Marathon

Yep, I am stretching, getting all pumped up, and ready, because this week I am going the extra mile. I’m doing an Art Making Marathon in the Creativity Tribe Studio.

On the agenda: more wire dreamcatchers, a wire dragonfly, a few painted birdies, and some little paintings. …..and maybe a few other goodies!  My sister-in-law, Erica Duff, has a new salon that blends her love of doing hair with her love of handmade art.  Oh, and I can’t forget her love of all things feathered!

Feather’s Beauty Lounge

I few months ago I decked her walls out with some of my paintings, and now, for her first big event (a trunk show featuring fashions and accessories from Benjamin’s) she has invited me and a few of my favorite art chicas to join in the festivities!

I have spent the last year building my business with Amy and Charlotte as my creative comadres. We meet about once a month for tea, talk about the highs and lows of having creative businesses, show our art together at certain venues, and offer rich support for the solo-preneurial journey. Growing my business has been made extra special with their energy to help keep my flying.

Here are some goodies from the first day of my Art Making Marathon.  It a great way to channel the incredible momentum that I have felt after attending Paint Mojo Texas and doing art everyday this month with AEDM2012.
