Angels & Faeries Week: Creative Spirit Doll

Angel Week 5

Welcome to Angels and Faeries Week!  I am celebrating the countdown to the grand opening of Angels In My Studio 2013 by sharing some of my favorite winged, spirited, and energetic artwork. Angels In My Studio 2013 is a 5 month online class that goes to that space where art and mystery, creativity and imagination meet.  As part of the art course, each week you will be invited to explore angelic imagery through art and guided meditations.

Featuring A Creative Spirit Doll

Creative Spirit Doll

Creative Spirit

This mixed media piece combines some of my very favorite art process and materials.  First of all it is an art doll.  I don’t know when I fell so deeply in love with dolls (perhaps I never fell out of love with them!), but they have become an important part of my identity as an artist.  So using one to capture the essence of my creative spirit makes total sense.

Some other parts I love include the Shrink Art head and eye dangle ( remember playing with Shrinky Dinks as a child), the use of wire and beads (which connect to the jewelry maker in me), and a totally experimental element that accounts for the organic body.  This is achieved by heating Styrofoam (a process I don’t do anymore because of its potential toxicity.)

This piece is one of my all-time favorite dolls because it is the first doll that so blatantly depicts me.  There is something very powerful about self-portraits.  At times I have quietly felt that it was self-centered to explore my own image in art.  Now I think it is essential! Being able to hold a version of yourself in your hands is emotional.  Creating this piece which attempts to capture my sacredness with the addition of gold encrusting, halos, and little jewels helps me connect with my own hallowed nature.

Want to see my art?

Speaking of sacred art, I wanted to give an update on the Summer Solstice Journal entry I did as part of a prompt offered by Galia Alena.  You can find the original post about this HERE.

Angels & Faeries Week: Faerie Friends

Angel Week 3

Welcome to Angels and Faeries Week!  I am celebrating the countdown to the grand opening of Angels In My Studio 2013 by sharing some of my favorite winged, spirited, and energetic artwork. Angels In My Studio 2013 is a 5 month online class that goes to that space where art and mystery, creativity and imagination meet.  As part of the art course, each week you will be invited to explore angelic imagery through art and guided meditations.

Featuring My Faerie Friends

Fairy Friends

Faeries, everywhere faeries!

I have to admit, I am a sucker for the faerie folk!  I love the lore, the mystique, and the variety of ways they manifest within the Arts.  Some of my favorite movies are fae friendly…..Labyrinth, Dark Crystal, Neverwas, Willow, and, oh goodness…don’t forget Peter Pan!

I began drawing faerie art just as soon as I had the courage to play with drawing.  I found them comforting.  They were fun to draw, felt inviting, and let my mind slip into a world of fantasy and folly.  They provided an integral part of the deep healing journey I took on after my mother passed away.

Decades later, in one of the times of my life that was most physically challenging, I found myself stricken with sciatica from a bulging disk.  No fun!  I was flat on my stomach for a few weeks, unable to stand of sit without excruciating pain.  I had never felt so low in my life.  But the tide began to slightly shift, and one day, I felt good enough to sit in a chair for a few minutes at a time with an ice pack numbing the worst pain.

On the table where I was sitting, I discovered a scrap of paper, a pen, and a magazine.  I tore out a little face and drew a silly body.  I remember thinking when the crude sketch was done that I had been about 2 minutes without severe pain. It felt like a huge breakthrough. In front of me was a wee one (see below).  This little faerie with her tiny broomstick, blossom hat, and witchy heels was the first of many faerie friends to take my pain from me for short periods of time.  They were my distraction, my meditation, and my medication. Who knew a faerie could be such good pain management!

AngelsFaeriesWeek

As time has passed, I go back to my collection like paper dolls and look for wisdom, joy, understanding, and inspiration in them.  Some have been transformed into other works of art or have led the way to understanding some aspect of my being.  They are some of the brightest, most child-like, funky art I have done, and yet, they usually show up when times are the darkest….perhaps to usher me to a new level of light.

They are a joy to share with you.  I hope you might see something in them that feels comforting to you or inspires you to look for your own tribe of faeries.

Angels & Faeries Week: Tea Cup Angel

Angel Week 2

Welcome to Angels and Faeries Week!  I am celebrating the countdown to the grand opening of Angels In My Studio 2013 by sharing some of my favorite winged, spirited, and energetic artwork. Angels In My Studio 2013 is a 5 month online class that goes to that space where art and mystery, creativity and imagination meet.  As part of the art course, each week you will be invited to explore angelic imagery through art and guided meditations.

Featuring My Tea Cup Angel

Tea Cup Angel

This little angel lives in my studio.  She was done as part of an art challenge hosted by my dear friend and Flying Lessons classmate Kathleen Conrad of A New Creation and Upcycle and Remix.  Kathleen and I roomed together at the Art Retreat in Wisconsin.  She is a sweetheart for sure!

Kathleen and Rachel

Kathleen invited us during the challenge to use tea bags in a creative way.  I used mine to honor the anniversary of my mother’s passing.  For more of that story, visit the original post about this project on my previous blog Art of Collecting Yourself.

A Cup Full of Gratitude: Tea Bag Momma

An excerpt from that post in 2011:  This cup forms the base of an art doll I created over the last couple of weeks to honor my mom.  It has a skirt made of 21 red zinger hibiscus tea bags (the pink color comes from the tea, to gold, I added).  The tea bag in the center of the cup is black tea…the kind mom made sun tea out of in the Summer.  The gold and pearls are to help remind me to treasure the present moment as much as I do the past.  The tag of the tea bag has been made into a tiny heart shaped journal.  It is blank to remind me that my future is wide open and not strictly defined by my past…but certainly influenced by it.

The doll is constructed of wire (one of my favorite mediums to work with).  Her face is a watch, altered with a drawing.  The drawing looks more like me than it does her, but I am okay with that…reminds me that we are much alike.  Hanging inside her chest is a glass vile filled with garnets and a note that reads love.  And in her hands, she holds a nest with three eggs representing to me the three phases of womanhood.  As I move through each phase, I not only learn about myself, but learn more about my mother.  Kind of magical.

The doll makes me so very happy and helps make this day extra special. My mom was the first artist I ever knew.  She painted oil landscapes and taught me the importance of engaging the creative.  I don’t know who I would be without having had her influence in my life.  Luckily, I don’t have to figure that out.

Look for more angel and faerie art here tomorrow.

One of my favorite ways to find inspiration is within my own art.  Often I will do a doodle, sketch, drawing, or painting and some element will jump out at me.  That then inspires exploration of the element.  I might take that into a poem, a new drawing, a sculpture, or song.

The doll above is made of cardboard, tissue paper, and mixed media.  She is in-process.  There are a few more elements to be added but I am letting them simmer.  She originally came out of a drawing I was doing after a conversation that I had with my friend Kakali about near death experience.  I love that she is looking within.  When I hold her in my hand, she inspires me to look within myself.

This is a poem that bloomed from looking within.

Gratitude Poem

I absolutely love how one work of art has inspired another which inspired another.  Perfect!

The Indulgent Life

meaning and magic

I have been indulging in life this year.  Not the kind of indulgence where you eat rich, spend lots, and party til the sun don’t shine.  The kind where you hold onto whatever comes your way and sap out every morsel of meaning and magic you can.

What I have held onto…

There was a birth in my circle of friends followed by lots of time with the baby, funny faces, kisses on the bottom of the feet, adventures in diaper changing, and those magical moment when you help the little one find his way to slumber land.

There have been illnesses:  calls in the middle of the night, quick trips to the hospital, surgeries and moments where we didn’t know if this loved one or that was moving closer to or further from death.

There have been second chances:  a heart made new, whispered I’m Sorry’s, choked up Thank You’s, hope for the rest of a new life given.

And there have been last chances:  families and friends drawing close to squeeze out every last bit of loveliness life has had to offer, pulling up memories of the great times, letting go of the worst, counting breaths and pills, holding a hand, stroking a furrowed brow, and in the end inviting the letting-go.

There have been celebrations….of the birth, the play, the renewal, the life well-lived.

success quote

In each of these threads of existence, I have looked for the gift.  That is the lesson I chose to learn this year, taking GIFT on as my word for 2013.  It is easy to look for the gifts in the places where celebration is the norm, but when life gets difficult and emotions are tender, being grateful and turning your eyes towards the positive takes some dedication.

And yet, that is where I am.  It doesn’t come automatically though.  I am choosing to shift my perspective.  The more I do it, the easier it is for me to understand HOW I am doing it.  That HOW is what I want to share with you next week.  Until then, I invite you to look for the gifts the difficult might have to share with you.  You just might be surprised at how much of life has something valuable tucked inside it.

Art Journal: Summer Solstice

Art Journal

At the first of the year I discovered Galia Alena, a New Zealand based mixed media artist with a deep understanding of the creative spirit.  She and I were in the Fly Tribe Word Hop, sharing our words for the year.  Her offering was mesmerizing.  It was a video chronicling her journal process for exploring her word.  I loved it especially for its invitation to let intuition guide the process.  This is how my art usually evolves and I could appreciate witnessing that on her video.

So when I got an invitation to participate as an instructor in Angels In My Studio 2013 and saw she is part of the gathering of teachers with me, I was thrilled!

This weekend, she posted her Journal as Sacred Vessel Summer Solstice video.  It is lovely. I watched it Friday and have been letting it percolate.  Tonight I visited my journal as time would allow.  Here is where I am…

Summer Solstice

I see a woman emerging.

What the journaling brought up for me….

I have had a weekend filled with introspection.  I feel very connected to the world inside, and somehow to the world of symbols, metaphor, and stories that exist in the reality where imagination, intuition, creativity, and spirituality bloom.

Summer Solstice in South Texas is the beginning of a very intense time.  I think we often associate the Winter with a time to go inward, but I believe that is completely subjective.  We wrestle with extreme degrees in the heat of Summer that send us looking for shade.  It has already begun.

That going inward has made Grandmother Bear show up in some of my sketches.  For me the bear in an introspective creature, extremely fertile, birthing, feeding, nurturing….all while in a slumber.  She creates in a dream-like state.

The words I wrote beneath the painting helped remind me that I should balance movement and rest and that the movement should be gentle and flowing.  This mirrors the insight I felt about Bear.  She is active in an inactive way. I also got in touch with the importance of water (birth water and the consumption of water) to help relieve the fiery nature of the season.  I even felt like the foods I would pick should be more water based….fruits and veggies, light soups, smoothies, fresh juice, lighter proteins.

I still have several layers to add to my journal entry for the Summer Solstice.  I don’t mind not getting it done in one sitting.  This will be a great project to let simmer on a slow burner.

Special thanks to Galia Alena for her seasonal journal offering. I will leave some links below, including a guest post she wrote for The Amulet Magazine that I enjoyed finding when I was looking for links.  It is a jewel for sure!

Tweaking the Tribe: Finding Kindred Spirits

creative_growth

Nine months ago, I took the leap from my WordPress blog to an independent, stand-on-my-own website that I built from scratch without much know-how.   When I first published it, I could clearly see some of the places I wanted to take the website and my business but some of the process and destination were hidden from my view.  The more comfortable I get here, the more it feels like home.  Like a fabulous fixer-upper, there is always something to work on, something to tweak, and some addition that would make it just right!

The Creativity Tribe concept comes from a deep desire to help others get in touch with their instinctual spirit of creativity. I believe that creativity is powerful, healing, and can make our lives rich and meaningful.  Creativity is something that can help us connect to the most authentic places in ourselves while providing the opportunity for us to cultivate support and encouragement in the relationships around us.

Just think about it…. when you see a child expressing themselves through the creative arts…. dance, song, doodling, or make believe…. they are bring out something pure in themselves.  They honor you with their expression.  They invite you into a sacred space.  This is the same invitation I make to you.  Come play with me.  Come into a sanctuary for your creative spirit where others are gathering to share the small ways they are making big strides in life.

Our New (FREE) Community

I have created a community on Facebook that I have been keeping a big secret, waiting for just the right time to share it with you.  It is my surprise gift to you….gift being my word for the year!  It has a spattering of creative spirits who regularly invest in that part of themselves that brings forth ideas and inklings.  It also holds a space for individuals who wish to bring more creativity into their lives or to live life in a creative way.

I call them the Creativity Tribe.  To qualify to join you need only have a desire to connect with your own creative spirit and be willing to support the kindred spirits who find themselves answering that same call for themselves.  Follow the link below and ask to join the group. Please note respectfully that I will not be accepting personal friendship requests as I am practicing setting boundaries between my personal and professional accounts.  I hope you understand.  That said, I hope you will consider joining the Creativity Tribe Facebook Group and that you find it inspiring!

Creativity Tribe Banner Words

New stuff is popping up all over the website.  I have changed my banner (the big piece of artwork up top) and swapped out a few of the images on the sidebars (on both the blog page and the other pages.)  That’s because new stuff is going on.  When I first moved from my WordPress blog, Art of Collecting Yourself, I had an idea what the website would be evolving into, but had so much to learn.  I build the site on my own from a template called U-Design (I love it by the way….the template and the site.)   I have had it up about 9 months and in that time have honed what my offerings are.  There are lots of fun things in the works over the summer too.

About the Banner

You might notice I have given a wink to that old blog.  This idea of collecting ourselves comes from my experience with expressive art as a healing force.   My intention is to make this space a place where you can come to be inspired to do just that, use art to bring yourself in alignment with who you are at your core.  I try to model that in my own life and give examples of it here.  Over the course of the summer I will be crafting several opportunities for you dive into the Art of Collecting Yourself.

My Summer

This week also starts a series of camps that I am teaching locally.  Four sessions to be exact.  By the time you get this I will be waist high in kiddos, doing drama games, improv, and just plain having fun.  What a perfect way to engage my own Creative Spirit.

Hearing From You

I would love to hear what your summer looks like.  What is ahead for you?  Any wishes or intentions you would like to claim?  I would love to hold a space for their becoming!
