My Redonkulous Birthday Bash

Events  I am sort of in LOVE with April.  First of all, it is my birthday month, and I have a tendency to stretch my celebrations out a bit.  But I am going to redonkulous links to make this year’s birthday celebrations stand out!  How am I doing it?  I am bringing to life the dream that I had as a wee lass of being a Gypsy Wild Woman.

It’s kind of silly, I know.  I turn 44 in 14 days and all I care about is playing out my Gypsy Wanna Be.  What’s even sillier though (and I love how delightfully wonderful this is), I am not doing it alone!  I have already been joined by a circle of local creatives who are exploring their Inner Wanna Be’s with me (oh, geez! I can hardly wait to show you the great video we put together!!!) And…. I am hoping as I go along on my nearly 3000 mile road trip that others will join the festivities.  (And I especially have my fingers crossed that one of them will be YOU!)

I leave on my trip to Wisconsin in 6 days, headed up for the Creatives Celebrating Sisterhood Art Retreat where I will be teaching my Passport to Dreams Come True Class.  I am busy in the studio this week getting supplies together and whipping up a few special giveaways to share once I get there.  I am also beginning to contemplate the Inner Wanna Be I chose to breathe life into during the trip. I have a special video about that coming out tomorrow. (wink)

Being a Gypsy isn’t the ONLY part of myself that hides just beneath the surface.  I have lots of Inner Wanna Be’s (IWB’s).  We all do in fact.  Sometimes we just aren’t in a place to live out some aspect of ourselves.  Perhaps our creativity feels challenged by our environment or some aspect of our culture keeps us from fulling living out what is inside….whatever the reason, that part of ourselves goes underground.

Over the course of the next 4 weeks, I want to invite you to explore your IWB’s, choose one to make a journey with, and invite it to come out to play.  “What’s the payoff?”, you may wonder.   I think at the very least, exploring an aspect of yourself in a creative way can help you grow your Creative Confidence.  And who knows, you may discover a pathway to more heart-felt way of living.

Staying In Touch

I am planning on keeping in touch during my trip by updating the blog with posts, pictures and videos throughout the month of April and a wrap-up after the trip.  I would love for you to interact with me.  Hey!  It might get lonely out on the road!

I have created a page just for that purpose.  This is how it will work….

  1. I will be sharing my post on the blog page and occasionally offering opportunities for you to explore your own IWB, through a journal prompt, creative activity, or perhaps a suggested video topic. (First one tomorrow!)
  2. I would love for you to create a post with that and leave a link to your post on the IWB’s page. Don’t forget to place a link to my page in your post so others know where to find you.
  3. You can follow highlights from other Creativity Tribe Inner Wanna Be’s by visiting the page and clicking through to the links at the bottom.  Leave a bit of encouragement behind, letting them know you have visited.
  4. I will also have a badge for those of you who want to get serious about playing with their IWB’s and would like their world to know it.  (Coming soon!)

If you want to make sure you don’t miss anything, make sure you subscribe to the blog for updates.

Passport to Dreams Come True

the creative life

April is going to be a gloriously wild ride.  I am jumping in my Ford Element and traveling up Middle America from Texas to Wisconsin and back again. I am going on one of the most amazing journeys of my life.  How do I know?  Because I am choosing to make it so.  And I am taking you with me along the way (more about that on Monday, so make sure to drop back by….I promise this will really get your creative juices flowing!!!)

Oh, but back to trip….

My Wisconsin destination takes me to the Creatives Celebrating Sisterhood Art Retreat at Lake Geneva where I am presenting a workshop that is near and dear to my heart, Passport to Dreams Come True.

Working on Workshops

what_I_Love_2

On Tuesday’s This Sense-sational Life post, I talked about the Sense of Choice and my shift from working for someone else to building a life around my dreams.  This week, my dreams are in front of me in a big way.  On Saturday I will be presenting at the South Western Unitarian Universalist Women’s Conference along with Jessica of Heath Roots.  I will also set up my art as a vendor.  What fun!

Whole Woman Workshop

Jessica and I are sharing our Whole Woman Workshop there.  During the event, we invite women to come into the circle of sisterhood and explore through dance, storytelling, and doll making the essence of who they are as a woman.  You know you love what you are doing when you just can’t wait to do the work in front of you….and that is the case with this workshop.  I will let you know how it goes.

Touch Drawing

Last week I taught a Touch Drawing workshop at the Art Center of Corpus Christi.  I had a wonderful blend of individuals coming together to explore what was a new technique for many of them.  I loved watching them wade slowing into the process of going inward and discovering what wished to be expressed with the hands.  Working with a new media or a new technique can force a Creative to step outside their routine and engage the actual process of being creative.  That can be an uncomfortable place, but on the other side of the fear we often discover something about ourselves that we had maybe forgotten….like what it feels like when we don’t give up, how we act in the face of uncertainty, and the joy of embracing curiosity.

This quirky woman began as a touch drawing of mine and grew into a mixed media piece.

I think it is inevitable that while we work on one kind of project our mind brings up other similar projects for us to toy with.  I love to take full advantage of those times.  They provide yummy ideas and energy to boost creativity.  This has definitely been the case with all the workshops I have been planning.  These two have led me to think about the workshop I am teaching at the Creatives Celebrating Sisterhood Retreat in Wisconsin this coming April.

Passport to Dreams Come True

The workshop I am teaching there is near and dear to my heart.  It began as a seed when I was working on my Masters in Counseling.  Passport to Dreams Come True.  It came out of my love of bookmaking, doll making, and helping others nurture their creative spirit.

Creatives Celebrating Sisterhood

Oh boy, do I have an exciting 2013 planned!  And one of the highlights is teaching at Creatives Celebrating Sisterhood Art Retreat.  The event is the weekend of my birthday, so I decided to do it up right and turn what could be a quick jaunt up to Wisconsin (from Texas, lol) into a leisurely drive-about. Yep, ROAD TRIP!  I can’t wait.

So my birthday wish is to meet lots of creatives there. Hint!  This is the perfect time to plan for it. Just give a little nudge to the Santa ….and all the little elves….. in your life.  In fact, we have done some of the work for you!

Just grab it and print it out…..easy, breezy!

I hope to see ya there!  April 17-19, 2013….It’s just around the corner!

For more details and to see a super cute video of me sharing my excitement about the event, head over the the Creatives Celebrating Sisterhood Art Retreat page.

Paint Mojo {Lotus Pond}

I have been sitting with my Paint Mojo Texas experience, letting myself gently make my way into a fuller understanding of the process and what it means to me.  One part of the weekend keeps standing out and is ready to be shared.

The second morning we were at Paint Mojo Texas, Tracy Verdugo, our teacher, took a walk out on the dirt roads of The Lotus Ranch.  After lunch, she asked us to join her for an excursion.  We blindly followed her, as we had all weekend, but instead of trustingly delving into the landscape of our imaginations through paint and brush, we made our way to a lotus pond.

As we wrapped our new sisterhood around the edge of the pond, we giggled like school girls.  The tiny frogs made their ways from lily pad to lily pad as we, one by one, shared what the weekend had been like for us.  Every woman had a different story, and every story felt like a square on a giant quilt that we all shared.  After only a few short days, we had found connections that were steeped in meaning, meaning that unfolded like magic in front of us.

Anyone can host or teach a painting retreat, but it takes a special team to put the mojo into a retreat. Tracy Verdugo brought a soulFULLness to the weekend that left me wanting for nothing.  Our hostess, Selah Gay approached the retreat as if it were her own personal masterpiece. She crafted her love of what she was doing into every detail.  It was exactly what a girl might dream of an art retreat being.

Now, that lotus pond……I returned at sunset on the last day just minutes before leaving.  The blue haze of twilight just strong enough to catch me before the sun went down. Over one shoulder, a glowing full moon, and just within ear shot the howls and hollers of a few coyotes and a pack of wild artist women settling in for an after party.  I wouldn’t be staying, but my heart was sure to linger even as I drove through the Texas Hill Country, making my way.

Coming soon…. images from the retreat and the ways this retreat has changed the way I think about life.

Art Every Day Month

Today’s AEDM offering comes out of a series of works I am doing around healing art.  I shared earlier in the month that I have been using little works of art as medicine for years.  On the adventure to embrace life fully, I have been working with the cards more often.  Today’s card will ultimately be sent to a doctor I have teamed up with to help me with wellness and longevity practices. (Don’t worry, I am in fine health, just wanting to keep it that way!)

An update on my wire dreamcatchers from yesterday.

I wore the earrings attached to the card (above) today and got invited by a local salon to sell them for the holiday season.  Told you, good mojo!

Art Every Day Month is a movement, inspiring artist around the blogosphere!  Head over and see what they are up to today!  Then, consider joining us.  It is a small act that makes a big different.  Creativity…….. engage!

Pinning Life Down

I am back from the Paint Mojo Texas Retreat with Tracy Verdugo.  I have so much to process.  I love learning and love it even more if I can stretch what a teacher offers enough to bring it over into my own life so that it takes on a new energy.  That is what is going on with me for now.  The process is rather contemplative. I feel like several themes in my life are being touched by the art retreat.   And I want to share some of that with you soon.

In the meantime, life keeps moving. As a blogger, I have enjoyed having things to talk about that relate to my art and my life. My head wants to explore issues with you that my heart feels are important, but sometimes things like holidays get in the way.  How could I let Halloween pass us by without visiting about it?  It is my fave-o-fave time of year!  I can’t!

So this is a Pinning Life Down post. Ding! I pin down a bit about the retreat. Ding! Pin down a bit about Halloween. Ding! Pin down a few other thoughts that are floating past me as life spins on.

Ding! Halloween. I am having a party tonight with family and a few friends.  The theme is a Witches’ Ball.  My roommate and I are hostessing it, both dressed as witches, of course.  Our invite warns that anyone not sufficiently dressed in costume will be turned into a toad.  Honestly, I hope I get to toss a few frogs into the lily pond in the back yard!

Okay, so this isn’t really MY lily pond. I took this at one of the ponds on The Lotus Ranch where the retreat was located.  What a sweet place to sit and wind down.  I know I will be visiting it during creative visualizations and meditation for years to come.  I made a video at this pond for you that I will be sharing later in the week. Ding! Retreat pinned down a bit.

Some of you may recall that in August, I offered my first e-course, Touch the Moon. I can’t believe it, but the course is coming to a close in the next couple of days. It has been such a great journey.  We did a number of art-ivities together, shared our moon stories with each other, made new friends, and learned about how to bring the Moon’s Wisdom into our own lives.  I have learned so much just guiding the class.  I will be offering the class again in the New Year. So if you didn’t get a chance to take it, no worries. Ding! Touch the Moon pinned down.

The Full Moon at The Lotus Ranch

As I wrap up Touch the Moon, I am looking forward to the next phase of growth for Creativity Tribe, offering Life Coaching.  This is really what I have move towards for my entire adult life.  I took a few different routes to find my way to this spot, but the training I am doing now with Brandi Graves of You Grow, Girl is what has me glowing.  Certainly, the other paths (earning my masters in counseling and working for two years as a counselor in a domestic violence shelter, teaching art and drama for 20 years, and building a business as a massage therapist) will all lend themselves to the work I do with others, but going to coach school seems to help frame it all up in a way that make sense.  I am eager to finish so that I can jump in and start doing what I love, helping others help themselves make their dreams come true!  Ding! Life Coaching pinned down.

That is kind of how life is….hard to pin down. It keeps growing and evolving….changing.  I often forget that, but when I can remember, I am better off for it.

Now your turn….What do you have to pin down today?  What is happening in your life that is so exciting you just want to share it with someone?  What do you WANT to be exciting?  What is going on in your creative life?  Some shift?  Some bit of movement calling to you?  What bit of fun are you conjuring up for Halloween?  Help build this tribe by letting us know.  We want to support you…and who knows maybe someone needs to hear what YOU have to say today.  I am listening for your Ding!
