Creating Fearlessly Art Journaling

I fell in love with journaling the day it was introduced to me.  As an adult, I discovered you could create journals that held both words and images.  Mixed media journaling opened self-expression up to me in a whole new way.  My creative spirit and my art in general have never been the same!

Bite into Creativity

It has become a tool for ironing out ideas in my professional life, a stress-buster for my personal life, and a go-to source for personal development when I help other Creatives spin their dreams and engage more fully in creative projects.

About a month ago I started broadcasting on Periscope.  Periscope is an app that allows you to visit live with people all over the world and then watch the ‘scopes as a replay.

This upcoming week I will be joining a group of mix media art journalers on Periscope as we share tips, tricks, and inspiration to help you dive into #CreatingFearlessly!

Creating Fearlessly Mixed Media Art JournalingThe Creating Fearlessly Mixed Media Art Journaling series is FREE.  There are a couple ways to keep up with it. To watch live on Periscope at the scheduled times, go in and search for each of the presenters, then follow each of the artists to receive notifications.  OR search #CreatingFearlessly on Twitter to find replays.

Whether you are new to art journaling or have a stack of self-expressive jewels tucked away in the corner, this series is bound to offer you some little gem.

Power of Play at Work

Play at Work Scheduling your Play

Play at Work

When I went out on my own and began Creativity Tribe, I knew I wanted to live what I believed.  I knew building a business that valued play at work would boost my creativity and be an investment in my wellness at the same time.  I knew play at work was imperative for creativity, and creativity was at the heart of my business.

Scheduling Play

I took my play at work seriously, scheduling it into my business life.

  • Play dates with other artists.
  • Engaging play in my artwork.
  • Private dance parties for personal celebrations.
  • Eccentric glasses.
  • Encouraging my inner child in every day interactions.

Oh yes….
and mandatory Crazy Hat Days.

Warm Hat Collage

Hats!  And not just in Winter months.  Any opportunity to show off my head gear, I am the first to dive in.

sporting a wide brimmed hat for play at work day

Summer months, I had a blast wearing goodies during Summer Art Camp.  Art shows and festivals mean fairy garland, and annual Halloween gigs let me show off my handmade witchy garb.

Crazy Hat Day Collage

The power of play isn’t just for me.  Play at work is infectious.  It makes others happy to see me pushing the boundaries of creative play.  They want to join in.  It gives them permission to live more freely.  It links strangers together in the magic that is Creativity Tribe. So I keep it up!

crazy hat pink flamingo

Since my work can often be done on-the-go, it isn’t unusual for me to take crazy hat day out into the world.  On days when I really need to reach high for inspiration, I grab my pipe cleaner pink flamingo hat.  It is the pentacle of play at work!

Creativity Tip: Consider how you can invite playing into your work life.  Even in small ways, play is a powerful asset!

Inside Creativity Tribe Studio {Pics & Projects}

Studio Tour

About two years ago when I jumped into shaping Creativity Tribe, I turned a little sunroom on the side of my house into Creativity Tribe Studio. From this space, I pull together what I love to do and send it out into the world to touch the lives of other Creatives and Creative-Wanna-Be’s (which is simply the name I give for those who have not yet discovered they can trust their wish to create the lives they wish for). I make my art here, spin visions for better lives with my coaching clients, blend up lovely combinations of essential oils, drum, dance, sing, pet cats, hug friends and above all…hold the space for the play and healing that comes when Creative Spirits come together.

Here is a tour of Creativity Tribe Studio…. through the lens of Instagram.  It is a new toy for me…one which I am in love with.  If you are on Instagram, I hope you will follow me.  It will be a fun way for us to connect.  If you don’t have Instagram…just a note, you don’t have to have an iPhone to use it.  That was my impression.  So….join the fun!!!  You can find me @CreativityTribe

Hope you enjoyed the tour.  Lots more images on Instagram and more to come! You can find me @CreativityTribe

Crafting Time

paintmojo165-1

I like to break life up into time chunks.  I suppose all of humanity does that.  We measure it in minutes, days, weeks, months, seasons, years, etc.  As a creative, I use these time bits as a medium for crafting life.  The year begins and I am thinking back on what I loved, what I want to improve, and how to make the year to come fit the dreams I have for myself.  Each night, I envision the day to come, working through the rough places to help me think through what might be a tripping spot.

Time Tower

Mondays are my days for Weekly Wishes, that place where I decide general themes for the week, where I will put my energy, and what the landscape of the next 7 days will be.  I use various tools to plan it out.  Sometimes there are lists made on Sunday night.  My calendar holds the appointments with hints of what is flexible enough to allow for extras.  Some appointments are in stone, others are penciled in.  Some weeks feel monumental, while others are transitional weeks that help me recover from or prepare for the more intense parts.

Three Big Projects

The week in front of me is going to be about balancing care of myself while giving attention to others.  I am starting a new half-day camp that blends drama and art.  I am the drama teacher.  We are focusing on improvisation and experimental movement.  Drama, Drama, Drama! Can you say FUN?!

Summer Solstice is this weekend.  I have signed up for Galia Alena’s Summer Solstice Sacred Vessel Journaling Ritual. I am teaching Angels In My Studio with her and can’t wait for a first hand glimpse into her teaching style.  I discovered her at the beginning of the year when we were both choosing our One Little Word for the year. (Mine was Gift and hers, Generosity.)  Celebrating the seasons is a great way to craft life with time as a medium.

I am also gearing up for a large mediation gathering that will take place this weekend. I will be on the team working with newcomers. We will be drinking ceremonial cacao. Some of my attention will be going to getting my head and heart in the right space for giving during the event.

As for the Self-care

In between commitments to others, I am continuing to support my healing knee.  I find long soaks in the tub to be the best medicine so far.  I am also playing house, getting my studio in shape and organizing a space that I hope will be just right for shooting more videos.  I have also been doing a lot of drawing and want to continue exploring some of the work I am doing there.

Brilliant Idea….How about I share my Summer Solstice Journal next week in a video?!  Score!

How About You?

What tricks do you have for crafting time?  What wishes have you cast for the weeks  or seasons to come?  Where are you working on balance in your life?  Do you have any Summer Solstice plans? I would love to know.

When Life Makes Other Plans

Gypsy Self Banner

Today marks a week that I have been on the road making my way from South Texas to Lake Geneva, Wisconsin for the Creatives Celebrating Sisterhood Art Retreat.  I will be teaching a workshop at the retreat called Passport to Dreams Come True.  The workshop takes mixed media techniques and blends them with bookmaking, journaling, creative visualization as a means of helping flesh out the vision and plans of our big hearts. Not surprisingly, as is the case often in life, my journey cross country is giving me lots of lessons to prepare me for helping others make their dreams a reality.

One of the dilemmas that comes out of saying we want to attract or create something in our lives is that life is good at throwing you a ringer.  We say to ourselves, “I want to accomplish XYZ, and I can see that if I do A+B+C that will get me there.”   Then, life alters the equation, and we are left trying to get things balanced without losing our original goal.

I started my trip out with destinations along the way up to Wisconsin.  First a few stops in Texas, then Oklahoma.  When I got to Oklahoma there was some trouble in paradise.  Something in my suspension went haywire.  I was bouncing an grooving all over the road.  No, fun.  I questioned if I should get it fixed, give up and turn back.  That is when I called on my Inner Wanna Be….the Gypsy Wild Woman.

I asked myself how she would manage this.  In my imagination a gypsy carries their home with them.  There would be no reason to turn back because where they were is where they should be.  I also imagined she wouldn’t be afraid to ask for help.  And so I did.  And the world responded with generosity.  My timeline was altered slightly, but in the end, I was able to get to my next destination.

The journey didn’t look like I thought it would. I imagined I would travel during the day with plenty of time to rest and with the option to look around the next new place before turning in.  Instead, I traveled at night with rain and lightening clearing the way for me.  I drove safely but didn’t stop very often because I felt a pull to get in and get settled.  Although that may sound frantic, it wasn’t.  I had plenty of good tunes to keep me company.

Behind the scenes, too, I was not alone.  I think this is going to be the big lesson of this journey I am taking by myself.  I am never alone really.  The day I was trying to get my car fixed, one thing after another put off the work.  It was my birthday, and I asked friends and family….and the Creativity Tribe Facebook Page gathering…..to focus my birthday wishes on getting it fixed and me safely to my next destination.  They did. And I made it.

At breakfast this morning at the Walnut Street Inn in downtown Springfield, Missouri, I was greeted by 9 couples who travel B and B’s yearly.  “Are you Rachél?” they asked.  I was delighted, a room full of strangers who knew my name.  “We were looking for you last night.” My heart was warmed.  Never alone.

And so, today starts out with a meet-up that happened spontaneously through the Creativity Tribe FB page.   Here in Springfield, I am meeting with Ginger Davis Allman with The Blue Bottle Tree .  Then, I leave for St. Louis where I will stay with someone I have never met through AirBnB.  I am expecting to feel that same sense of welcoming from the world each day and to give it where it is needed.  I think my Gypsy Wild Woman makes her way through life like that.  It isn’t part of the journey I expected, but I am delighting in it, leaning into it, and loving it…..even when, and especially when life makes other plans.

Follow my travels more closely by joining me on the Creativity Tribe Facebook Page.

Gathering the Inner Wanna Be’s

iwb banner blog

It starts today….prep for the Journey of the Inner Wanna Be’s.  A month’s worth of peering inward to see what wishes to come forth into our lives….what wishes to be played out….what is willing to risk being a little vulnerable for the sake of finally going “there”.  Who knows what will come of our social experiment.  Here we are, a bunch of people in love with the idea of being creative, deciding to play What-If together.

What if I indulged this thing I always wished of being and brought a bit of it into my life?  What if I stopped hiding behind what I should or shouldn’t do and when out on a limb to do what I WISH to do?  What if I did it with other people who were risking just like me?  What if….

The great thing about this journey is that it can be as simple or intense as you would like.  Want to mostly just dream of your Inner Wanna Be’s and claim ONE DAY out of the month to put that into action?  Great!  Want to journal daily and push yourself to see what a month of playing out your fantasy in some way would be like?  Go for it!  Perhaps you just want to watch as other creatives dive in….there is room for you too.  The Creativity Tribe Inner Wanna Be Gypsy Caravan is big enough for all!

Preparation: Exploring Your IWB’s

We start by going inward and asking what of yourself wishes to be known.

  • You can do that by finding a quiet space free from interruption.
  • Keep pen and a pad of paper or journal (perhaps one you will keep all your IWB journaling in) close by.
  • Close your eyes and get comfortable.
  • Say to yourself something like this…..I am thinking about those parts of myself that never really got a chance in the spot light, parts that I haven’t made space for in my life.  I wish to name them and recognize them now.
  • Let your mind drift around as you remember interests you have had, archetypes you have resonated with, and character types you have dreamed of being.  Let yourself dream on this for a bit.
  • When you feel like your heart and mind have explored your Inner Wanna Be’s, let you hand begin listing them on the page.  Try not to edit the process.  Let the list be impractical, fantastical, and improbable …as well as authentic.
  • Once you have listed your IWB’s, consider sharing them with the group on the IWB page.  You can do so as part of a blog post or as a video response to the video below.

Sense of Something More

sensational

A Sense of Something More

For as long as I can remember, my family has told ghost stories. As a child, my father swore some ghost named Oscar inhabited the attic. We knew from Oscar’s outrageous life (the fact that his girlfriend’s name was Petunia and her favorite flower was a cactus) that Oscar was a brilliant, ongoing story my father crafted when he wanted our undivided attention.

We also had little gathering of the cousins when my Aunt Lynne was in town. Aunt Lynne told fortunes, read palms and gave me my first sense of Something More….something mystic….something beyond the veil. To see Aunt Lynne from outside the family, I imagine you might think she was a bit eccentric, but not any more than most Southern women. In fact, most of the women in my family fall into that category, an inheritance I proudly own.

Having watched the movie Ya Ya Sisterhood, we all recognized ourselves. In fact, we now regularly have Ya Ya parties with close friends and extended family.

IMG_4508

I have been thinking a lot about having gotten my palm read as a child and listening to my father’s constructed stories. Somewhere along the way those two things wove together. We grew up and the little kid stories moved closer to the veil.

By the time I was 21, I experienced my first death, and it was a doozie! My mom passed away. She was just 45 (I turn 44 in less than a month….and I still feel like….I still feel too alive to even consider that it could end so early). Losing her made me search for an opening to the veil, made me want to believe that the thread Aunt Lynne traced in our hands could lead across to a connection with my loved one.

Tea Altar
It was about that time that I noticed weird things happening. Sometimes subtle  sometimes apparent  A distinct sound or smell timed in a sychronistic or meaningful way……why, just last month after leading a group visualization something shifted in the next room where no one was only seconds after the intense meditation ended. I could tell story after story. I bet you could too. I often wonder if they are clues that we aren’t alone or perhaps coincidences.

I leave myself open to both possibilities but always follow the thread to the veil just in case.

This curiosity with Something More has strongly influenced my art, and the art has influenced me to consider even more seriously the Something More.

I was working with a counselor while in college. We were doing breathwork, increasing the oxygen level of the body, and I began envisioning my mother over me. She had changed. She seemed to be made of light and took on a kind of crystallized form. I felt comforted and healed.

I took it for an interesting meditation. At home, later in the day, I drew what I saw to share with the counselor the next week. Upon seeing it, she told me she had seen drawings like mine in an old book. She explained the book and the beings, calling them Devas. I was interested, curious, but didn’t take it for Truth per say.

Some months later on a trip to Austin, I found myself in an old bookstore. On a bottom shelf on the second floor, a book documented, with story and drawings, creatures the author called Devas. They looked like the drawing from the meditation. Not angel, not fairy, something elemental and outside my previous experience.

takeflight

After that, I did drawing after drawing of Devas, saw what looked like people when I passed trees, mostly women with crowns of branches. I learned to draw by trying to capture what my inner eye was experiencing.

To this day, when other people imagine their loved ones as angels, I tend to broaden it to account for my own visualizations. The thought that Something More is out there and perhaps even close by brings me comfort. I may be completely off, but that doesn’t matter so much to me. If those Something More’s are figments of my imagination, so be it. They are still mine, still as real as a drawing or sculpture, poem or choreographed dance. They are an expression of some part of me….and maybe even Something More.

I am delighted to share my Something More’s with you. I have been invited to join the instructors circle for Sheri Ann Ponzi’s Angels In My Studio this July. It is the second time the course is being offered. Check out the current class and stay tuned for more info about the one I will be part of. Reflection Moon & Creativity Boosters

Body Wisdom Project

Body Wisdom Project

Each New Moon for this year, I join with my friend (and sometimes workshop partner) Jessica to explore our relationship with the body by choosing a focal word for lunar cycle.  We have been focusing on February’s Believing Moon, exploring what it means to believe in the wisdom of the body.  As is often the way with intuitive journeys like the one we are creating together, each level can unfold with a certain balance of mystery and synchronicity.

The mystery comes out of traversing the unknown.  This is especially true when you give yourself up to the guidance of a collaborative experience.  Having Jessica’s input makes my experience more rich, but it also takes me to places I would never have gone on my own.  There is a degree of fear that accompanies a shared journey, but I find that the results feel almost divinely inspired.  Is that the wisdom of the body leading us to a richer more meaningful experience?  Is it the spirit of friendship that is crafting a course of healing for us both individually and as a unit?  Or perhaps it is just the nature of creativity….that something bigger than the parts will find its way into existence.

Whatever it is, the Believing Moon has reminded me that something guides my path and that when I listen to my body and what it has to offer, I am made more whole.

Reflection Moon

March’s Moon….

After a bit of discussion, Jessica and I are delighted to name the focus for the next lunar cycle…Reflection Moon.  We have both signed up for Oprah and Deepak’s 21 Days of Mediation Challenge (would love for you to join us!…starts today!) and will be stretching that out to fill the entire Moonth.

Reflection Moon

The Reflection Moon will be about

  • looking into the self,
  • sitting and reflecting on what it,
  • encouraging the self not to strive for more but to simply be willing to admire what is reflected of the self,
  • falling in love with the wonder and authenticity of what IS before reaching for something more.

Join Jessica and I as we explore the relationship with body. We will update our blogs on the New and Full Moons and will post to our Facebook pages as inspiration strikes.

Creativity Tribe 2013

creativity_tribe_2013

So many new things are going on here at Creativity Tribe in the New Year, I figure I better start talking about them….if for no other reason than that I just might pop from excitement if I don’t!

First, I have begun fleshing out the tribe aspect of Creativity Tribe.  I have been asking myself how do I reach out to more Creatives, connect with Creatives from different disciplines, and help the people who resonate with the idea of a Creativity Tribe connect with each other. I have also been exploring how to offer opportunities for connecting with and celebrating ourselves!

Here’s where I am at……

{This Sensational Life Challenge}

I have reached out to Creatives from a variety of disciplines to join me in an upcoming blogging series that focuses on the senses. This Sensational Life Challenge is an opportunity to delve into the rich experience that life has to offer.  Each week, we will explore some aspect of life that one might say is sensational.  I have included some of the original senses, but being a Creative, I just had to stretch the concept to other less traditional senses.  So we will be playing with the sense of touch, taste, hearing, etc. but will also explore, for example, concepts like a sense of direction, knowing, or letting go. One thing they all have in common is that they will help you tune into This Sensational Life. (I hope you are digging on my play of words.  It is certainly done on purpose. I think the more we engage our senses, the more ALIVE we feel, and the more alive we feel, the more we connect with the essence of who we are!)

I don’t want this to be JUST about the posts though. I am pairing each post with an invitation for you to share your perspective and experience on the week’s focus.  Dive into the senses with me!  Discover a new sense with one of our guest bloggers. Craft your own sensational life, one week at a time, one day at a time, one vibrant moment at a time!

 {Body Wisdom Project}

Starting the first New Moon of the year, I am joining with Jessica of Hearth Roots on a project very close to my heart. The  Body Wisdom Project invites us to listen to our bodies, to ask ourselves, “What if my body is my teacher?  What would it want me to know?”  BWP will offer 13 Moonthly themes that will encourage us to cultivate a relationship with our body like never before.  Jessica and I invite you to join us on the journey.  More information about this, including a peek at our shared website will come soon.

{Creativity Tribe Teleseminars}

One of the best parts of being the curator for a space like this is getting to interact with the Creative Spirits who find their way here.  When I first started out on this journey, I wished for rich, meaningful interactions. Well, this year, I want to invest in that possibility even more, so I have created a series of teleseminars that will give us the opportunity to invest in our own creative journey while connecting with others who are on similar paths.  Each event will include a time in which I share tips, tricks, or hints for improving or understanding some aspect of life to help you move into the flow of a life well lived.  I will open the call for questions a hot seat coaching.  Hot seat coaching is short and sweet coaching sessions that dive in and help you get a direction for moving towards what you want in life. Calls will be recorded so that if you are unable to make the time, you can still gain from them by listening at a later date.  I am beginning the Creativity Tribe Teleseminars with 5 Secrets to Getting Out of Your Own Way Everyday in 2013 and Getting on with a Sensational New You.  You can register for the series here. And meet me the second Wednesday in January for our inaugural call!

{Coaching ….me & you}

Above all the wonderful plans I am making for 2013, having the opportunity to work with other creatives to craft their lives, their businesses, their sense of self, their creative growth, their projects, and their dreams is at the very, tip-top of my list of favorite things.  The relationships that come out of coaching are extra special. They are a blend of gentle guidance and a shared journey. They are about personal growth, creative aspirations, and meaningful connections. This kind of one-on-one work will support this community in a profoundly personal and deep way. If you are interested in learning more about working with me, you can find that information here. I would love to visit with you to find out if we are a good match.
