On a Roll Art Shows

The last several months I have had some art shows pop up locally.  One was part of Contemporary Art Month- Corpus Christi (in March), and the other, a series which features a local artist each month.  As it happens, they are also at two of my favorite local sipping spots. One, for tea; the other, coffee.

Lotus Dreams Tea

This is my second year to join with a local business for Contemporary Art Month – Corpus Christi, sponsored in part by K Space Contemporary.  (Last year’s show celebrated the year after cancer.) I have been partnering with the tea divas at Lotus Dreams Tea for workshops and creative happenings since the first of the year, so, it made since to connect for this event.

Lotus Dreams Tea and Creativity Tribe event

The art show centers around two large pieces.  I worked on them simultaneously, along with a handful of the smaller works.  I floated around the studio anointing whichever canvas spoke loudest to me until it felt settled in the moment, then I would move to the next.

I worked on the two larger pieces as my extended family struggled with a very difficult loss….a little girl child.  I took my feelings to the canvases and moved them out with each brush stroke, each finger swipe, and mark. This is how I first came to know art after losing my mother over 20 years ago, a deep grief that lead eventually to a new understanding of life… and the life after life.

This time it was no different. I moved from the electric grief of Baby Emery’s illness and passing into the brilliant blessings that her life brought in its short but powerful existence. To see the work, you may never know it was seeded in difficulty, but that is the magic of art…. healing art.

Cafe Calypso

The coffee house show is at Cafe Calypso.  This is where hubby and I go most weekends.  We met our roommates and some of our closest tribe there. I was honored to be included in their artist line-up.  I wasn’t sure I had enough work but I pushed to finish a work of art that I began as part of a Masterpiece in a Day event led by Corpus Christi’s Marina Arts District.  VivaCC! The premise was that we were invited to go out into the Marina Arts District and create one piece of art that same day that captured the essence of the district.

I had such a blast.  When I was done, I felt a bit high from doing what I love in the midst of such a dynamic environment.  The sun, wind, water, and visitors were so energizing.  But with just 6 hours or so, I was not pleased with the work as a finished work of art.  I hung it in my living room and pulled it into the studio every month or so to work on it a bit.

Masterpiece in a Day Corpus Christi

When the Cafe Calypso art show came around, I spent a few nights working late into the early morning. Little by little it came together.  The night before it was to be hung, the dancer turned into the goddess Calypso, and finally, I fell in love with her.

On a Roll Art Shows

Over the course of the Summer there are a few more art shows I have the opportunity to join.  Every time I put my art out into the world, it is a stretch for me as an artist.  It feels risky in the beginning, but in the end it is exhilarating.  These upcoming art shows are collaborative in nature, and I love that.  Celebrating other artists while celebrating myself as a Creative…that is the nature of Creativity Tribe.

Invitation to Stretch

If you have found yourself here, you are most likely a Creative.  Maybe you paint, draw, write, dance, or just have a creative way about you.  Creativity is a mindset.  I would like to challenge you to share your creativity with the world.  Put yourself out there and dare to express something.  It doesn’t have to be deep.  It could be playful, sensual, or just spontaneous!  Let me know if you are planning on it and then drop back by when you do.  I want to celebrate you!

Creativity Tribe: A Creative Living Studio

creative living studio

Just two years ago this coming September, I breathed life into Creativity Tribe.  I stepped into the website with a lot of vision for the future and enough know-how to get me started on my journey.  I had never built a website before, but I was determined to create the sanctuary of my dreams.

Over the last two years, my life took turns I never would have foreseen.  I took off on a cross-country solo journey to teach at a Live Laugh Love Retreat in Wisconsin and just a few months into arriving home discovered I had Uterine Cancer.  I spent a good portion of this last year hunkering down to take care of myself.  I learned so much along the way.

I had surgery in March (everything is looking great!), but it has taken me up until last week to really feel like myself again.  Full energy, full hearted, full speed ahead.

All that time contemplating life and indulging in self-care helped me get clear about my intentions with Creativity Tribe.  So, I have taken the liberties of REVISIONING this space.  In all actuality, I am simply fleshing out what was a bare-bones beginning.

Blogging at the Speed of Life

new life

Sitting in front of the computer, I don’t know where to start.  Blogging has been the most dedicated practice I have ever had in my life and the last 6 months Life pushed me off my game so I could pay attention to it.  This Summer I got sick and discovered I had uterine cancer.  It took awhile for me to get the surgery that was recommended.  But Life has its way of moving you into what is important. Its trick:  The more I needed to slow down, the less my computer worked.  I was pulled far from my blogging life.

Surgery behind me now….Today I woke up at 4:40 a.m. missing this space so much.  I grabbed my laptop and headed out for Sandi’s Diner.  Sandi is a dear friend who makes a mean breakfast at the break of dawn.   AND, also has internet.  SCORE!

The big question….would my computer work there?  Was something wrong with my internet or with my laptop.  If you are reading this, you will know the answer.  What was impossible at home is working like magic here.  Maybe life is just letting me loose.  Saying, go…spread your wings…you are free.

And that is how I feel these days.  Free.

I spent last month traveling back and forth to Houston’s MD Anderson, a world class cancer hospital that happens to be in my area of the world.  My hubby, Eric, went with me and several times we comment how we felt wrong for having such a good time at the hospital.  But they must have someone trained with running big places like Disney working there because it ran like a theme park.  I like to joke that they have a game you play there….take off your clothes, put them back on…take off your clothes, put them back on…and I was winning.  Yep, lots of tests.  Then the surgery.  And just last week, a check-up.

womb doodle

They feel like my prognosis is really good.  It doesn’t seem to have spread. YAY!  So they will keep an eye on my health every 3-4 months.

I chose the word THRIVE as my word of the year for 2014.  That’s what I am doing!

I have some catch up to do for Creativity Tribe.  My email has been down.  I hope to have that working in the next week.  If you tried to contact me and didn’t hear back from me…it was a little email snatching gremlin.

Big beautiful hugs to each of you.

Inside Creativity Tribe Studio

Art Heals

I have been a busy little Creative lately.  The studio is a royal mess… I say royal because I think it reflect a bit of Queen of Creativity vibe to it which I take in stride.  All that creativity is coming out of a desire to express the big journey my life is taking as I live with cancer until my upcoming surgery.  I know I mention it often in my posts, but my life really revolves around that deep self-care these days and I want to share that part of my journey with you.

I feel like we all have something that drives us closer to care for yourselves.  Mine is cancer right now, yours may be stress or self-doubt, desires for more serenity, who know…. the list potentially could be very long.  But I know self-care in the midst of life itself isn’t just a means of making life more bearable, I believe it is one of THE reasons we come to the Earth School.  To learn to love ourselves and care for ourselves.

Art in the Name of Self-Care

In yesterday’s post about Gifts from the Universe, I gave a peek at one of the pieces I have been working on.  It is about love of my body, radiating an exuberance for life, and looking inward for wisdom and guidance.  I did her with a series of other paintings in a very intuitive process that starts out with mark making on the canvas then look to the canvas and the self to collaborate on what wants to be expressed.  I will share the other pieces some other time.  For today, I would like to feature the Queen of my Secret Garden.  I just adore her!

Queen of My Secret Garden

My Morning Meditation in the Studio

Body Wisdom Check-in

Sitting with eyes closed, focusing on my heart and on the seat of knowing that sometimes gives me a gut intuition , pull my attention out from behind my eyes and try to be aware of every cell in my body… aware of the wholeness of me.  I invite in a steady peace and confidence into the space that is me and then expand it into my day. Breathing into that I let go of trying to control and lean into the Mystery of not-knowing.  I stay with this until I intuitively know I am done.  Then a deep breath, a good stretch and the day begins!

NEW: Free Gift to Boost Your Creativity!

I hope you will head over for my free gift.  I really put lots of love and energy into, wanting it to bring creativity to your life and life to your creativity!

Painting Up a Storm

Art Heals

There is a storm in my body.  I think it has been brewing for a long time, although I didn’t know it.  Recently it made itself known in a big way.  And now, I am sitting on the front porch of my soul watching it pass over me.

In the last several weeks it has felt so big that all I knew to do was sit with it. As luck would have it, I was in my studio the other night, and I began painting while I was doing that sitting.  The painting felt good.  I could tell it was doing something in my body.  Something…a hormone or feel good chemical, perhaps the workings of my creative spirit….something was helping the storm dissipate.

storm 1

This isn’t a huge surprise to me….this feeling that comes when we dive into creativity, no holds barred.  That is one of the benefits of art, it is a catalyst to healing.  And so, I am painting up a storm….or should I say OUT a storm.  And my body feels grateful.

storm 2

So grateful for the release that I have just kept painting…..a piece of cardboard, a bigger piece, a small canvas, then larger….then the entire top of my studio table.  The more I paint, the more cleansing.  The more I paint, the less dark the storm.  The more I paint, the better I feel.

storm 3

This is how creativity leads to healing, how it helps us understand ourselves, and connect with the world we have spinning inside.

*******************************

Creativity Prompt:  Invite yourself to sit with simple art supplies….pencil and paper, pen and paper, cardboard and paint.  Nothing fancy, just what is at hand.  Close your eyes and let the supplies give life to what you feel.  You don’t have to paint pain….but you can if you wish.  You don’t have to draw storms, but you can.  Perhaps what wishes to come up is that smile that doesn’t get to glow often enough or bright enough.  Don’t think too much and don’t halt what comes forward.  Make a mess.  Start with silly, ugly, scribbly, doodles, dashes, and wing-a-dings.  It doesn’t have to make  sense or look beautiful.  Think of it as giving your creativity permission to wander around.  When you are done, let it be what it is. Share it or keep it to yourself.  But KNOW….that this kind of self-expression builds bridges to healing us.  It gives us permission to express who we are and love ourselves in the process.

Creatively yours….

Angels & Faeries Week: Faerie Friends

Angel Week 3

Welcome to Angels and Faeries Week!  I am celebrating the countdown to the grand opening of Angels In My Studio 2013 by sharing some of my favorite winged, spirited, and energetic artwork. Angels In My Studio 2013 is a 5 month online class that goes to that space where art and mystery, creativity and imagination meet.  As part of the art course, each week you will be invited to explore angelic imagery through art and guided meditations.

Featuring My Faerie Friends

Fairy Friends

Faeries, everywhere faeries!

I have to admit, I am a sucker for the faerie folk!  I love the lore, the mystique, and the variety of ways they manifest within the Arts.  Some of my favorite movies are fae friendly…..Labyrinth, Dark Crystal, Neverwas, Willow, and, oh goodness…don’t forget Peter Pan!

I began drawing faerie art just as soon as I had the courage to play with drawing.  I found them comforting.  They were fun to draw, felt inviting, and let my mind slip into a world of fantasy and folly.  They provided an integral part of the deep healing journey I took on after my mother passed away.

Decades later, in one of the times of my life that was most physically challenging, I found myself stricken with sciatica from a bulging disk.  No fun!  I was flat on my stomach for a few weeks, unable to stand of sit without excruciating pain.  I had never felt so low in my life.  But the tide began to slightly shift, and one day, I felt good enough to sit in a chair for a few minutes at a time with an ice pack numbing the worst pain.

On the table where I was sitting, I discovered a scrap of paper, a pen, and a magazine.  I tore out a little face and drew a silly body.  I remember thinking when the crude sketch was done that I had been about 2 minutes without severe pain. It felt like a huge breakthrough. In front of me was a wee one (see below).  This little faerie with her tiny broomstick, blossom hat, and witchy heels was the first of many faerie friends to take my pain from me for short periods of time.  They were my distraction, my meditation, and my medication. Who knew a faerie could be such good pain management!

AngelsFaeriesWeek

As time has passed, I go back to my collection like paper dolls and look for wisdom, joy, understanding, and inspiration in them.  Some have been transformed into other works of art or have led the way to understanding some aspect of my being.  They are some of the brightest, most child-like, funky art I have done, and yet, they usually show up when times are the darkest….perhaps to usher me to a new level of light.

They are a joy to share with you.  I hope you might see something in them that feels comforting to you or inspires you to look for your own tribe of faeries.

Angel Work

Marvel Us Moon

I simply marvel at the story that life writes for us.  It can be more captivating than any dime store novel, more heart breaking than the best  Hallmark commercial, funnier than an extended bloopers reel.  Sometimes it doesn’t feel so marvel-us, but if we step back just far enough and cock our head just right, we can often see magic before our very eyes.

My work the last several months has been thick with stories which play out in both my inner and outer life.  Working as a life coach, creativity mentor, and massage therapist means my work can take on many shapes.  Recently, I have been working with individuals who are re-storying their lives after news of life threatening illness.  I didn’t go out looking for them per say  didn’t place an ad inviting this theme, never even consciously put it out into the Universe, but they all came to me within a short period of time.  When that happens, those big synchronicities, I look at them as gifts. (Gift is my word for the year….and boy, do they keep coming!)

The work varies. Sometimes I do something simple like offer a sip of water or listen.  Other times, my work is more hands-on and more closely associated with my training in massage and life coaching.    That would all be enough, that work….it would be fulfilling on its own.  But as sometimes happens when we open our hearts to another, we heal something in ourselves.  I like to think of myself as their Angel and them as my Angels.  That is something to marvel over!

This week there has been plenty of Angel Work!

That has been reflected in my artwork, as well.

Angel WorkThis is from the art journal I started at the Art Retreat I taught in Wisconsin during a class I took with Junelle Jacobsen.   I have been playing with it the last several weeks.

I am teaching banner

Angels In My Studio

This deep healing work and the art that is coming from it also reflect one of the focuses I am going to take up this Summer as an instructor for Sheri Ponzi’s Angels in My Studio 2013.  I am teaching a Spirit Doll Workshop where we will be creating mixed media dolls and getting in touch with our Creative Spirits!

Check back Monday for all the juicy details for a giveaway I am hosting for a spot in the class.  Wouldn’t it be fun to spread our wings together!?

Standing in the Threshold

Giftquote

At the Threshold of a Journey

Anytime we poise ourselves at the beginning of a journey, either in the outer physical world or from within, we begin with an idea in mind of how we might approach our movement from where we are to where we wish to go.  There are the imagined obstacles we anticipate, various options for the course traveled, milestones we hope to reach, and some desired destination that just might be worth risking disappointment for the joy it could bring.  All of this is the beauty and danger of the In-between.

Should I stay or should I go, now? (You know the song!)

As I prepare for my cross country trip to Wisconsin, I am becoming evermore aware of the bounds within myself that this trek will challenge.  Fears rise up.  Doubts sit in my stomach.  Hurdles appear in my mind.  My spirited imagination can be both the life and death of my dreams.  I suppose the question becomes, then, what will navigate the vehicle my imagination fuels.  Will fear take me into the pitfalls and stall my voyage?  Or will I move through the vulnerability, however clumsily, for the sake of the movement itself. The inclination to abandon ship is sometimes strong.  Such a long journey, so many unanswered questions, so many uncertainties…. and yet! What is life without the occasional odyssey?!

Old Building 058

“We travel, some of us forever, to seek other states, other lives, other souls.”
Anaïs Nin, The Diary of Anaïs Nin, Vol. 7: 1966-1974

I am determined to make vulnerability my friend these next three weeks.  I am learning that it is the life partner of courage. I have lots more to say about that, but I am keeping it close to my heart for now as it blooms into a deeper understanding of who I am, what I desire, what stands in my way, and what degree of uncertainty I am willing to withstand for the possibility of reaching the fulfillment I shoot for.

I know some of you have decided to take the Journey of the Inner Wanna Be with me.  I have been so delighted to have other Creatives declare their interest in playing along.  We really are a small but growing band of seekers!  I use the word play here because I feel there is a sense of make-believe we are engaging in when we explore the archetypes that make up the IWB’s, but at the same time, I know that something monumental can come from that examination.  Play has amazing curative properties. So don’t be surprised if you find yourself face to face with opportunities to bring real change to your life as you explore this make-believe aspect of self.  It may live initially in the imagination, but somewhere along the way you may find room for aspects of  it in your real life.  It is this dynamic that makes me call this kind of exploration Creative Sacred Play.

Are you taking the Journey of the Inner Wanna Be’s?

We are several days into the Journey but still definitely in our preparation phase. I leave this Sunday for my trip.  If you wish to go on the journey and explore your personal Inner Wanna Be’s, here is a quick list of steps to catch you up.

  1. Make a list of your Inner Wanna Be’s.  Follow the link for a full description of this Creative Activity.
  2. Invite your friends and family to do the same.  This is optional but loads of fun.  The video is a great jumping off point for getting a sense of the event.
  3. Choose one IWB from the list you created that you are going to explore for the rest of April.  Place it lovingly in the comments below.
  4. Begin “dreaming on” or contemplating the IWB you chose as the weekend goes on.  Don’t force it, just let it share itself with you.

Now, dive into the vulnerable and list your IWB in the comments. I can’t wait to for you to join us!

Witnessing Discovery

Discovery

I love witnessing discovery!

The best part of Creativity Tribe is the work I do with Creatives who find their way into the projects I offer.  Sometimes it happens in a coaching session or on one of the Party Line calls, but most recently I have been connecting during preparation for the Journey of the Inner Wanna Be project.

A peek into the project so far…

Below you will find a video.  Before you watch it, I want to share with you the process that went into making it.  The individuals you will see are folks from my hometown.  I consider them (and many others) my local Creativity Tribe.  Some are long-time friends, some new; some are even family.  All are courageously sharing with you and the world little glimpses into their inner world.

Art Opening

In the video you will see handmade signs much like the ones I held up in my video from yesterday’s creative activity kick-off post. What you don’t see in the video is the conversation that took place as the signs were being put together and after the video was complete.  Imagine a table at a cafe filled with people sharing fond memories of wishes gently tucked aside or screw ball ideas about how life might be lived paired with a true desire to throw caution to the wind and be that wild character they think they should only dream about. Imagine two loved ones revealing to one another aspects of their personality that they had never thought of sharing before and planting the seeds of conversation that supports one another’s deepest becoming.

Lisa

Loss for words…

I tell you, I love to write, but moments like the ones I have had in just these beginning explorations of the Journey of the Inner Wanna Be have left me searching for more accurate ways to explain them.  The best I can do is to encourage you to experience what I did for yourself.  Tell your friends and family about this project.  Feel free to say you heard about it from a lady on the internet who is a bit unorthodox, who is doing something (as my father says) that is a bit far fetched.  Then invite them to “go there” with you.

What if you could be anything?  What if you could name the kind of life you would lead if there were no rules?  What would you call that life role?  What archetype would you explore?  No holds barred.

Have them make signs or even index cards to share with you.  Video tape them or just talk about them.  Who knows what discoveries you will witness!

If you do decide to make a video, please feel free to share it on our Inner Wanna Be page.  The more the merrier!

Want more creative activities to inspire your Inner Wanna Be?  I will be updating the IWB Activities and Prompts page as the journey plays out. Feel free to explore all or just the ones that call to you.
