Art is my Fave

This month I have been all over the place… quite literally!  My art work is showing in four different venues in my hometown, and I couldn’t be more over the moon!  I can’t help but think back to the days when I first began showing my art.  Having one piece in a show was a big struggle for my self-esteem.  I was an artist, tight in the bud.

Fresh out of college, I discovered a local artist co-op, KSpace.  I had taken a few art classes, was doing The Artist’s Way, and decided to follow the impulse of my Creative Spirit.  I took some photos of the little bit of work that I had and applied to be part of the co-op.  To my delight, I was accepted.

Towards the end of my time with KSpace, I attended a Christmas party where the organizers were handing out funny certificates that captured some little bit of each artist’s story.  My award….Most Improved Artist.  I think some might have been taken aback….Are you trying to say my art wasn’t good?! But I knew without question that I was very loved by the group and I listened as they shared their inspiration for the award.  One of the artist shared that when I applied, my art was not yet developed.  Several of the artist weren’t inclined to let me in, not out of meanness, but out of a desire to keep the quality of the work they showed.  But one artist, Day Wheeler, saw something in my art and advocated for me.   They respected her enough to trust her instinct, and after a short time, I began to bloom.

One of the things I love about the shows I am doing this month is that several are shared with other artists who are stretching their sense of who they are as artists to show their works with me.  I feel like I am giving them the same boost that Day gave me…..and for which I remain grateful.

A Quick Peek at Some of My Work

Garcia Arts and Education Center

I am showing a piece that was originally created for the Apocalypse Show at the KSpace Contemporary December of 2012.  The work is inspired by the Paint Mojo Texas Retreat I attended some months before that with Tracy Verdugo.  Wanna see my process? My hubby (Eric Payne), room mate (Lisa Fonseca), and I have been making art together for the last 3 years since we all started sharing a home together. We usually create small 4 inch by 4 inch drawings of faces that have a different part of the face drawn each by a different artist, then one of us makes the whole piece come together. Some are whimsical, some creepy, all of them have inspired us to push ourselves as artist and human beings.

Exquisite Corpse Drawings

The collaboration comes from a little drawing game my mom would have me and my brother do when we were very little. I learned years later that it originated as a parlor game called Exquisite Corpse Drawings invented by the Surrealist. Who knew my mom was so darned with-it! Every time I do it I think of her!

Lisa, Eric, and I created three larger pieces to help give the show a bigger presence.  The pieces below, done in the same way as the smaller pieces, are mixed media on cardboard.
