Dancing within the Creative Fire

Dancing within the Creative Fire

A few months ago I started getting in touch with a feeling of something simmering within me.  It had been brewing for quite sometime.  I had been feeling like I was off my game for quite sometime, so this little something, even though buried deep inside, felt vastly promising!  I could feel the flames licking at my heels to move me into action, but I still struggled to ignite them enough to feel a push of vital energy behind them.

Tools for the Creative Fire

I dug in with my best tools for stoking the creative fire to see if I could move past simmering and into flame.

I started with inner journey work, partnered with sacred cacao from Guatemala.  I journaled, created mind maps of the many projects that came up for me.  I visited with trusted mentors, potential collaborators, and even complete strangers.

Then I could feel I had a few ideas spark up inside.  I knew enough from the personal work I was doing to understand I should be focusing on something live and face-to-face….an event of some kind.

I explored potential event spaces.  I looked for inspiration and invited the Universe to share direction and wisdom with me.  I looked for clues that I was on the right path and acted like something was going to come of all the Wish-To energy….even though I often still felt just an inkling of what might actually come of my sparks.  I moved forward, playing the part of a person who strongly believed something big was coming my way.

Then, it happened.  Several of my creative ideas started to take shape.  I leaned heavy on my intuition.  If something felt right and easy, I went with that.  If there was a struggle, a snag and hook inside, I looked for the easy button! And within a few of those key  ideas, other ideas came in and shifted the direction so that multiple interests were finding life within a few major projects.

Suddenly, I was on fire!

Sacred TempleKeepers was birthed, a partnership between me and Milena Worsham from Running Buffalo Journeys.

Milena and I have been friends and worked together both in business and for personal development for years.  She lives primarily in Guatemala but through the magic of the internet, we manage to share our spiritual journey in nearly weekly visits.

And so we began planning a series of PlayShops around the cacao we both love and use as part of our regular practice of self inquiry. We blended in creativity, spirituality, and a hefty dose of play.

I hunkered down and rode the wave of productivity to its pinnacle.  Our collaboration was solidified. There were meetings on Skype, back and forth emails, meditating, and brainstorming with additional partners.  Then, long nights to write copy and design promotional materials for the markets we were designing our PlayShops around. I love what we have brought to life together.

As a result, I have been absent from this site and very present in Creativity Tribe live events and collaborations.

Part of me struggled with not keeping Creativity Tribe firmly up-to-date.  But I decided to stay with the momentum.  I think that was the right direction.

Go To Glow overlay

I have spent the last several weeks traveling and guiding our special gatherings, as well as offering private sacred cacao sessions. Sunday ended the bulk of this line of events, and the momentum for follow-up events is strong in the air. I am brilliantly tired and joyfully filled up!

Dancing within the Creative Fire…Next Chapter

This opens a new chapter for me.  What it will be exactly, I am eager to see.  I am allowing the sparks of possibility to express themselves as I continue to dance within the creative fire.  I can’t wait to share the evolution with you!

How I Became a Doodle Daughter

How I Became a Doodle Daughter

I keep chuckling to myself, remembering how I became a doodle daughter.  That isn’t necessarily something I have considered until today, this hand-me-down gift from my mother.

I am headed off to the Houston area to teach a women’s retreat.
Camp Cullen at Trinity Texas

Camp Cullen at Trinity, Texas

My subject is Art Journaling and specifically doodling.  I have been journaling since I was in 7th grade, consistently, and doodling even longer.

Doodling is one of those things I feel like I inherited from my mother.  I remember her sitting on a tall stool in the kitchen.  It was layered with years of contact paper.  She would talk to her best friend every day while something was simmering on the stove.  As the stories spun out between them, my mother’s hands coiled and dotted corners of mail or note pads.  I sat on the other side of the bar, watching….mesmerized.

I never took art as a youngster.  Drawing didn’t come naturally to me like it did her or my brother.  But I would sit and draw with them on still Saturday mornings at Lake Mathis, feeling like I was part of their special club.  Those were the roots of how I became a doodle daughter.  Some of my fondest memories.

Over the years, I have used little memories like that as a kind of creative communion between me and Mom.  Somehow I can know her better when I am in the rhythm of pen rolling across page. doodle art faith

Doodling can be an escape-from and a returning-to all at the same time!  What better way to celebrate getting away from it all and connecting more deeply with the essence of Self than to revisit that family tradition…..to honor how I became a doodle daughter!

Did my mother ever imagine she would be teaching me to bless my life with the dance of her ball point pen?  Probably not.  She was just doing her thing.  But the truth is, whenever we share our creativity with another, we are giving them permission to share a bit of their vulnerability with us…..with the world!  That is a huge gift.

So I am off to Lake Trinity, about 6 hours North of that little lake where I first enjoyed my doodle tutelage.  I am eager to connect with her there in my heart….between the lines, dots, dashes, and swirls.

Here is to my mom….and the legacy of play and expression she left to me.  It is my honor to share that with the women of the Spirit, Mind and Body Women’s Retreat this weekend!

This SENSE-sational Life: Sense of Self

sensational

One day while sitting and thinking about my life, I realized it was just sensational.  I asked myself what made me move from not loving my life so much to being in this new place.  The answer came to me that I had connected with the senses in a very broad way.  Yes, the traditional senses had been part of it, but subtle senses were also part.  The sense of joy, a sense of gratitude, a sense of connection….when we tap into linking our conscious self with subtle parts of the self and the world around us, we can follow a path that leads us to a more SENSE-sational life.  Sure…it is a play on words, but try it and you may see it is also a great tool for falling in love with life.

Sense of Self

Today I am delighted to share a story that is unfolding in front of our eyes of a woman opening up to her Sense of Self. Nicole Bray is a woman who was born in a man’s body.  Her mother, Carol Bray, is a dear friend of mine and an artist I adore.   Nicole has undergone surgeries to alter her body so that it matches the Sense of Self she finds peace with. But her transformation is not yet complete and being in-between is a rough place to for her to be.

I share her story because if is brave, gives us the opportunity to support her and her mission to help others and because it is ultimately about Creative Living.  And Creative Living is what Creativity Tribe is all about.

This story is a bit edgy because it traces a theme in our culture that many people either are not comfortable with or stand in strong opposition to.  Being a Creative can also be counter culture.  But that is not the place I wish my visit with you to go for very long.  I hope you will hold onto the human aspect of what I share.  I am sharing a person who is discovering after a lifetime of deep unhappiness how to connect with who she is, and she is creating that self for the world to see.

That also is probably too simplified.  So this is probably a good time to invite you to let Nicole share her story with you.  And how she is moving towards her Sense of Self.

Follow the Impulse

FollowImpulse

My dear friend Jessica with Wild Heart Holistics often talks about “following the impulse.”  I remember her talking about it years ago when she was leading dance classes.  She wanted us to pay attention to how the impulse wanted us to move. At first I didn’t fully understand what she meant, but over time, I found myself trying to detect the impulse so I could follow it.

The impulse isn’t something that lives somewhere in the body and yet, that is where it comes from…the body…from our being.  For me it can come from different places…. a radiating wave of urging from the heart, a subtle knowing in the brain, a quick jump of the gut, a sharp pull on the shoulder blades as if we had wings that wanted to jump into motion or the echoing of many senses that pull the whole self towards a resolution.

Detecting an impulse is a very subtle art.  The impulse is often buried under foggy awareness so that it doesn’t occur to me that I have had an impulse for minutes, hours, or even days later.  But once it is detected, I know it as if it were a good friend.

Now days I have gotten really good at first detecting and then following the impulse.  When I act on it, I am often led to beautiful synchronicities.

Unicorn Magic

A Recent Impulse with Big Rewards

The listening…..

A few months ago, Jessica invited me to offer my art and share about the essential oils I love at the Earth Day Care Fair for her church.  I was in the middle of healing from surgery at the time and had no idea what the outcome would be or what my energy level might allow. But, there was this impulse to join in.  Finally, I decided to follow it.

I spent a few weeks preparing.  I got busy painting, bought a brand new Easy Up (purple!), and gathered the essential oil goodies I wanted to offer.  It felt good to work again.  Felt healing to dive into the paint.  And the nights that I stayed up bottling samples were delightfully aromatic.  I was having so much fun. (If you take a long breath, you might even be able to smell the wild orange and peppermint I have going right now in my diffuser!)

First reward….

A few days before leaving for the EDCF (Did I mention it was out of town ….about a 3 hour drive?), I posted a few pics of my art just to show my friends what I was working on.  When I woke up the next morning, I had an offer for my little unicorn (the background art for the unicorn above).  I knew then my impulse was taking me on a ride!

Double feature…

My artist hubby, Eric, and I headed out for our trip.  We visited Rose Duncan of RoseHeartNSoul Creations & Coaching for her art show at Intermezzo Gallery and Studio in Boerne, Texas.  The show was beautiful.

It was exciting to see so many art lovers doing their thing.  As the visit was about to wind down, the impulse took over and made another synchronicity bloom.  The manager of Intermezzo, Kathy Cody Gallaway, introduced herself.  We got to talking about my art. Rose suggested I share art images from my phone, and before I knew it, I was their newest artist!  Intermezzo is representing 12 of my mixed media works.

What is even more exciting is that we started talking about me potentially teaching workshops at Intermezzo.  Rose and I are collaborating on one right now that is very near and dear to my heart involving Artist Trading Cards.  The other involves a labyrinth walk and processing with art.  I can’t wait to see where that all goes.

Did you know I love labyrinths?  They often show up in my art… and on the beach when I have a few friends to make them magically appear!

Irene Jaan takes her turn at drawing out the labyrinth’s circuit.

They keep coming….

Later that night, Eric and I ended up at Jessica’s house and began telling her about the exciting news.  As we were talking to her a friend wrote me about doing the cover work for an upcoming book and I got a message about a return coaching client wanting to continue our work together.  All this before the actual Earth Day Care Fair even began.

The EDCR went well.  I shared the oils with lots of folks and did some really fun trades for my paintings.  Then, out of the blue got another message that a friend who had seen my paintings online when I post pictures of my booth wanted to buy my owl painting.

Owl Be Here

And when you get it all….

All that bounty in the course of three days was amazing for me, especially after a year of putting off so much of my passion as I pursued a victorious outcome with the uterine cancer.  I found myself that weekend holding up a new realization that I really could have it all.  Success with all my passions….  art, workshops, my love of essential oils, and life coaching.  And not only could I have it all, the Universe was sending signals for me to get
exactly what I was wishing for.  The trick?  Follow the impulse.

When Saying No is Saying Yes

saying No saying YES

I am back after a two week blog break.  I believe that is the longest bit I have taken from my blog since falling in love with the practice 3 years ago.  Not bad, huh?  My two weeks has been a beautiful balance of rest, relaxation, and re-creation.  I have been dreaming, processing, and stretching my wings.

To be honest, I mixed plenty of work up with my play, but with a job like mine, sometimes it is hard to tell the two apart!

Some Highlights….

I started off by heading to Austin to spend time with dear friends and take the Paint Mojo workshop with Tracy Verdugo (which I will do a post on before too long…including pictures of my painting).

Paint Mojo TracyPaint Mojo with Tracy Verdugo

From Austin, I headed about an hour South to the Black Rose Ranch, near San Antonio, and stayed with more friends.  Being tucked away out in the country was so restorative.  My bed butted up next to a window that I kept cracked at night, letting in the fresh air and sounds of coyotes circling the house in the early morning hours.

Black Rose HorseTime in the Country

From San Antonio, I headed towards Austin again and stayed in the little town of New Braunfels with my dear friend Jessica of WildWood Naturals.  Jessica and I have been friends for nearly a decade now, and whenever we hold space together (over the phone, the net, or in person) I am somehow reminded of who I am and what makes me tick.  I had a lot to be thankful for on my trip, spent time in nature, spinning my big dreams, and reflecting on my life….but of all those moments, there was an hour or two that she and I spent talking as best friends do that made my whirlwind trip all the richer.

After all that outta town love, I headed home to get ready for another trip.  Every Wednesday I meet with a circle of visionaries who dedicate themselves to two things…the love of meditation AND the love of chocolate (unprocessed ceremonial cacao from Guatemala to be more specific).  This last weekend we met up for an epic meditation session with one of North America’s oldest trees, affectionately known as The Big Tree.  Oh, and was she a beauty.  We sat and spun lovely energy together under the stars in the light of the Moon.

Big Tree 500In Touch with Nature and Self

As I look back over the last two weeks, I wasn’t any LESS busy, but I was busy with things that were very much focused on what I need right now… deep connection with what matters.  Certainly, my blog and this community matter to me, but I am hoping to balance more time in real life with less time on-line and that will mean saying NO to things I have sometimes gotten lost in…you know, social media energy sucks, surfing for things that don’t matter, falling down the rabbit hole.

Sometimes saying NO to all that means saying YES to what matters.  What do you want to say YES to in your life?  Don’t just let that question float by.  Sit with it today.  Journal about it.  Talk to your friends, loved ones, or a stranger about it.  Saying YES to your life is how you create it.   That is the ultimate in self-care.  That is what Creativity Tribe is all about!

Glad to be home….Glad to connect with YOU!

Encouraging Creativity

encouraging creativity

This is an invitation.  A calling to deepen your connection with a part of yourself that wants access to more of your life.  When we quiet the chatter in our heads enough that our hearts can be heard, we often detect the voice that quietly demands expression.  It wants to take you on a ride that you will never forget.  But fear has squelched it so often that it is threatening to go away.

Where will it take us?  What will others think?  Are we doing it right?  What sacrifices will we have to make?  What will slip out once we open up?

Good questions, all.  I don’t have the answers.  The only way you will find out is by daring to breathe into those spaces that are starving for life.  No other person but you can give you the gift of fully having shared yourself. Tend to your DEAR CREATIVE SPIRIT by encouraging creativity…today.

Witnessing Discovery

Discovery

I love witnessing discovery!

The best part of Creativity Tribe is the work I do with Creatives who find their way into the projects I offer.  Sometimes it happens in a coaching session or on one of the Party Line calls, but most recently I have been connecting during preparation for the Journey of the Inner Wanna Be project.

A peek into the project so far…

Below you will find a video.  Before you watch it, I want to share with you the process that went into making it.  The individuals you will see are folks from my hometown.  I consider them (and many others) my local Creativity Tribe.  Some are long-time friends, some new; some are even family.  All are courageously sharing with you and the world little glimpses into their inner world.

Art Opening

In the video you will see handmade signs much like the ones I held up in my video from yesterday’s creative activity kick-off post. What you don’t see in the video is the conversation that took place as the signs were being put together and after the video was complete.  Imagine a table at a cafe filled with people sharing fond memories of wishes gently tucked aside or screw ball ideas about how life might be lived paired with a true desire to throw caution to the wind and be that wild character they think they should only dream about. Imagine two loved ones revealing to one another aspects of their personality that they had never thought of sharing before and planting the seeds of conversation that supports one another’s deepest becoming.

Lisa

Loss for words…

I tell you, I love to write, but moments like the ones I have had in just these beginning explorations of the Journey of the Inner Wanna Be have left me searching for more accurate ways to explain them.  The best I can do is to encourage you to experience what I did for yourself.  Tell your friends and family about this project.  Feel free to say you heard about it from a lady on the internet who is a bit unorthodox, who is doing something (as my father says) that is a bit far fetched.  Then invite them to “go there” with you.

What if you could be anything?  What if you could name the kind of life you would lead if there were no rules?  What would you call that life role?  What archetype would you explore?  No holds barred.

Have them make signs or even index cards to share with you.  Video tape them or just talk about them.  Who knows what discoveries you will witness!

If you do decide to make a video, please feel free to share it on our Inner Wanna Be page.  The more the merrier!

Want more creative activities to inspire your Inner Wanna Be?  I will be updating the IWB Activities and Prompts page as the journey plays out. Feel free to explore all or just the ones that call to you.
