One Little Word 2016

One Little Word for 2016

I am always looking for creative ways to help me guide my life in the direction of my heart, my passions, and my dreams.  In 2012 when I discovered Ali Edward‘s One Little Word project, I delighted in the idea.  The practice has become an annual tradition for me, my family, and much of the Creativity Tribe. It is an important part of my work as a Life Coach and Sacred Creativity Guide.

Choosing My One Little Word

In years past, my one word for the year has come to me in various ways.  It isn’t uncommon for it to come to me weeks before the end of the year.  This year, the days ticked away and nothing felt right.  Finally, on the night before New Year’s Eve, I felt my mind playing with a new idea.

I realized there were a few thing in my life that I felt were important to having a healthy, enjoyable human experience that I just wasn’t doing.  If pressed to answer why, I wouldn’t easily be able to say, but I could feel something was holding me back from my best life.  I could also feel certain limiting beliefs that were ready to be challenged.  I wanted the shifting of these blocks to be the focus of the year.  Wouldn’t life feel so much more free if they were!?

One Little Word to Create Great Shift

I played with various words…. elevate, radiate, shift….then I felt transcendence.  I was laying in bed, in the dark.  The letters were swirling around with the sounds in my imagination, and transcendence became… trance-n-dance. I thought it was funny.  I welcomed the new perspective.  That shift is what I was asking for.

What does trance-n-dance mean to me?

One week in mid-November a friend, Phyllis Lejeune, came to stay with us.  Phyllis is affectionately referred to by a few dear friends as a Cajun Mystic.  She is funny, a wonderful storyteller, sage, and artist of life.  She also facilitates Trance Dance.

Phyllis Lejeune, Trance Dance, Cajun Mystic

My mind drifted to the first moments of the Trance Dance ceremony with Phyllis.

I am blindfolded.  I know where I am but can no longer see my surroundings.  Others are around me, also blindfolded.  I have just breathed my intention into the bandana which is now shutting out the light.  The music begins to offer a beat, and Phyllis tells us to remain seated until our bones call us into movement.  I wait.  Then the bones begin to move.  I am journeying in the dark, body moving: twitching, swaying, bouncing, writhing, releasing, inviting, crying, laughing, living.  And then silence, stillness, ….and yes, transcendence.

Starla in the Dark 500

Sometimes life feels like this.  Moving blindly in the dark with just an intention and my bones to get me through to the other side. This is the essence of intentional living.  And if I am lucky, I discover something about the self and existence along the way.

So this is my practice for 2016….explore transcendence as trance-n-dance.  Yes, I will be dancing blindfolded on occasion. I will also be exploring the more existential, symbolic dance in the dark, the LIFE dance of sacred creativity….with only my inner light to guide me.

Lorene BoulterFocus:  The word focus chose me this year! I’ve taken on many challenges for 2015, and I’ll need plenty of focus to accomplish them: art classes, swaps, guest teaching, besides all of my creative endeavors.  I need to focus on clearing out the old to make space for new. Change is good. I feel it’s time to let go of some past I’ve held on to!

Let Go:  This has been a process (I don’t know if I want to use a journey metaphor)–internal, intellectual, emotional….Many signs have confirmed that yes, it is time to let go….whatever was–both the precious and the disheartening–simply “was”…..let go…..now is the time to rely on strength, circle of arms, cadre of friends, and “be” what I am becoming.

It’s also the hardest thing for me to do.  I am an action person.  I have an idea and then instantly want to make it happen…. when some things really do require the opposite to blossom.

Change: And by that I mean in my innermost self that has been not so happy for too many years. I have many reasons to be happy and positive in my life and I want to really get in touch with those. Also a change in my creativity. I love to “make stuff” but I find I get stifled and not flowing. I need to let myself go and be free. Want to let go of some things in my past.

Collaboration: I’m opening myself up to collaborate with more people this year, creating more opportunities to feel good and make magic with like-minded people from all over the world to catalyze a larger ripple effect of awesomeness.

Grace: I wanted to remind myself as a special needs mother that sometimes my patience can be tested with therapists, case managers, teachers, parapros, psychiatrists, speech therapy, occupational therapy and many more. I can be challenged in everyday life by people or situations as many of us are, and sometimes, I can get a bit short with people. My goal with grace being my word of the year is to remind myself to try to handle things with more grace and less irritation. We are all doing the best we can with what we have to work with, and I have to just keep reminding myself that.

Also on the creative aspect, Grace as a verb (Graced) means to add beauty or decorate. I have stifled so much of my creativity the past few years, and I have so much creative energy floating around that I really wanted to harness and hone in on tp make some really amazing creations this year.

Balance: My word is Balance, (maybe.. there are so many things I struggle with) but I think balance of the physical, emotional and spiritual. How to learn to take care of myself in these ways so that I can take care of others in the same ways. The balance of doing or thinking for or of me, and also others without one or the other suffering for it.

Choosing One Little Word

creativegrowthOne Little Word for the Year
Personal…Professional

For the past 4 years, I have enjoyed choosing one little word to guide my year.  I discovered this practice from Ali Edwards.  It has been the crowning jewel of my intention setting for year.

This practice of mining for just the right word and allowing it to take me into the new year, places me somewhere between an intention, a wish, and a destination.  This year I have jazzed up my one little word for the year ritual by choosing a word for my personal life and another for my professional life, knowing that the two words will be like sisters to one another in the crafting of my overall life.

My Personal One Little Word for the Year: Sizzle

one little word for the year: sizzle

I usually begin dreaming on what my word will be towards the end of November and have it by New Year’s Eve.  I never know how it will come.

This year, I knew I wanted a word to express my desire to truly follow my creative impulse and to boldly embrace sharing my wildest, craziest, most exquisite creativity with the world.  I have been feeling myself holding back, editing myself and my ideas.  But I want to live this year with gumption!

I was with some of my spiritual sisters during a women’s gathering just before the new year as one of the women took us through a mediation to connect with the essence of fire in ourselves.  I have a blazing love for fire (yah, I went there!) and was drawn into the imagery.  I felt the fire, felt the flames, heard the ……then it hit me, the word.  SIZZLE!  I wanted that alive, fired up, hot dancing, vivacious expression of energy.  I wanted to feel the sizzle, explore sizzle, live sizzle, and be sizzle.

And so, I began playing with that word and, as is part of my tradition, I let it find its way into my art.  I am excited to share my latest mixed media project with you.  Art with an intention….that’s part of my sizzle!

Increase Your Level of Bliss

time to thriveI just love it when the Universe whispers messages to me over and over again.  Recently the message has been, “Up your tolerance for bliss.”  It is a backwards way to think, really.  Bliss isn’t something you imagine should need tolerating.  But the truth is, it can be an intense ride.

This messages was first something I felt.  About a year ago I had a couple of back to back months when I experienced extreme levels of happiness, felt like I was in my zone, and detected intense waves of ecstasy coursing through my veins.  I was hitting the mark on so many of my dreams and life was just plain good!

I identified all that as bliss.  If I had been any happier, I might have exploded.  I wondered if I had maxed out on the amount of happiness I could handle or if perhaps I might be able to adjust my inner bliss threshold so that I might eventually withstand even more.

SnowDancer

Months later while listening to the audiobook Four Spiritual Laws of Prosperity by Edwene Gaines, I heard her mention that this was an important aspect of prosperity.  She suggested that to follow through with calling more abundance into your life you would need to be able to stretch your capacity for bliss.  Later that same day, I opened one of Danielle LaPorte’s Truthbombs only to find that exact message staring at me from the computer screen.

Ah, I thought.  This message is for me. And so, I am setting out on a journey to consciously increase my tolerance for bliss.

“How does one do that?” you ask.  Indeed,  I am beginning by asking myself that same thing!  Curiosity is a great tool for creating life. I believe that my creative spirit must surely know, and so I have invited it to show me the way.

Journey to Increased Bliss

To help me stay on that path, I have chosen the word THRIVE as my word for the year.  I imagine that when one is in a state of thriving they are experiencing levels of BLISS.  Perhaps the two words are sisters!

Who loves ya, baby?!

Love is in the air!  I especially feel it after the great Party Line call we had last night. Big thanks to all the Creatives who called in during it and for those who sent well wishes!  You made me feel very blessed that I get to do what I love.

Speaking of love, I want to share some with you.

As you may recall, I chose the word GIFT as my focus word for the year.  I have been exploring it in a variety of ways and enjoying where it is taking me. Today is a perfect day for that word.

I want to share my gifts with you, help you expand the sharing of your gift to the world, and make it as easy as I can for you to do that, so I put together a special offer for coaching that is good through the end of February.  I think you will find that it is very generous.  I am planning on over-delivering here.  I have been studying about the law of abundance and weaving that mindset into the work I do, and I want you to benefit from it.

Bridging the Years

About 15 years ago, a couple of local artists held a New Year’s workshop that used mask making to consider the year that had passed and the one to come.  The link to masks was created by using as their focus the Roman god Janus who is depicted with two faces, one face looks into the past, one to the future.  I loved the concept because I think during these weeks that lead up to the New Year it is human nature to take stock of the year that is closing and begin cultivating the year ahead.

That bridging of the two years is exactly what I have done the last week or so and hope to continue into the New Year.  I will try to share my process here in hopes that it might help you work through your own transition.

I began thinking about 2013 about a month ago.  I like to set an intention for the holidays, and this year mine was to practice being in a spirit of giving.  The events that lead up to me discovering my intention also encouraged me to take that idea of giving and pull it into my intention for the New Year.  Last year I chose a word for the year – clarity.  It took me up until New Year’s Eve to pick my word, but this year it came to me quite easily. My word for 2013 is gift. As 2012 ends, I am wrapping up my studies with the word clarity and considering the word gift.

My intentional holiday candle (that I created as part of the StressLess Holiday Cheer Party) has the Spirit of Giving as its focus. I have kept it lit while I work in the Creativity Tribe Studio these days.  It makes me very happy.

Illuminata

I am also going to use a gratitude jar into 2013.  I discovered it through a Facebook share yesterday.  I have had a similar process in years past with a gratitude file, but the jar is so much more engaging.  I look forward to exploring the stories it will hold when I open it up and look through it just before 2014.

These little things….the candle, choosing a word for the year, creating a jar to hold gratitudes….these kinds of things are ways of deepening the beauty we find in life and of creating moments that have more meaning.  I encourage you to explore something like this for yourself.  It is a great way to write the story of your life….why not make it a story of your choosing!
