21 Days of Self-Care: Re-Treat Yourself Well

It's time to retreat yourself well. 21 days of self-care

21 Days to Re-Treat Yourself Well

(This event is closed.)

The need for self-care seems to hit when it is most inconvenient. Life gets busy.  Life piles it on.  Someone you care about needs a little extra care….or a lot.  And you are lift wondering how in the world to make it all work without dipping into reserves that already feel shallow.

Several years ago at the height of “going places” in my career as a helping professional, I got a hard taste of burn-out. Finding my way back to center meant balancing my busy schedule of pursuing my dreams while also committing to a consistent practice of meaningful self-care.

I have found that weaving this self-care into the rhythm of life is ideal.  If we make plans to take care of ourselves the same way we plan for taking care of business, we can have both.  If we don’t, we are often left wanting more of life and not having the energy or focus to make it happen.

With that in mind,  I have woven a spirit of renewal into a 21 day self-care e-course with Re-Treat Yourself Well.

Rachel Payne in shadow and light.

When self-care takes a back seat, you can feel low of spirit, low of energy, and challenged to find your way back to the bright side of life again.

That is why I have designed Re-Treat Yourself Well, a 21 day self-care e-course, in a way that helps you consistently schedule a tiny bit of time for investing in yourself in a big way.

On the Other Side of Adventure

Life As Journey

I am snuggling up at home these days, cats taking turns with my artist hubby for attention.  I was gone from home for 3 weeks, a record for me.  In my sleeping hours, I am still on a journey, trying to figure out where my bed is.  I slept in so many, I think my body forgot which one was really mine!

I have a thousand stories floating around in my head, like wanting to share with you all the amazing people I met, unfinished poems about the beauty of America writing themselves on my heart, realizations I made about myself and my life along the way, and the freedom of living life a day at a time with few responsibilities.  Some stories won’t get written because life tends to move faster than I can type, other stories will wait to be told for a day when they are more ripe.

For today, though, I want to share some of the pictures and a line or two to help you get a sense of them.  My camera was my buddy for much of the trip.  Sometimes I didn’t know why I was drawn to what I was, for whatever reason, it interested me.  Some pictures were taken from my car en route, most through the windshield.  They are a quick way to share my journey….enJOY!

Barn

america's heartland

Some of my favorite images on the trip were of the farmland and barns.  They reminded me of my youth, my family roots, my mother’s love of working close to the Earth, and of the origins of the food that finds it way to my plate.  Driving through so much of America’s heartland felt like living a moving prayer of gratitude.

beauty fields

The soft grass and skeletal structure of plant life displayed the artistic hand that nature paints with. My eyes were overcome with 3000 miles of beauty.

Mississippi River Bridge

I was fascinated with bridges during the trip. This one crosses the Mississippi into Memphis.

Historic Route 66

This bridge is from Historic Route 66 in Oklahoma.

Lincoln Memorial Bridge -Illinois

Geneva 2 112

I was on the road when the attacks on Boston took place.  I was staying with a sweet couple I met through AirBnB and feeling the stress of being far from home and family.  The next day, my journey took a wrong turn which ended up with me pulling into the entrance of the  Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery.  I took it as an opportunity to show my gratitude for freedom and for those who have been part of weaving it together.

Rachel Payne on Road

There are so many more pictures to show and stories to tell of my adventures on the road.  But for now, I am working on getting back into the swing of home life again.  That’s one thing I learned along the way, for sure.  Life keeps moving and so do you!  Make the best of where you are in the moment, know where you are headed and take with you the experience and grace of where you have been and remember…All is Well.

Keep creating!

On the Edge of the Woods

Postcard Road

I have been visiting some amazing homes with even more amazing people.  Each day that I share with someone, I just delight in the path that life can take us on.  I am in St. Louis today, having just driven in last night from Marseilles, Illinois where I was staying with my artist-friend, Amy Cavaness.

Rachel Payne Amy Cavaness

Amy’s home is tucked away into a little patch of woods out in the country.  Before I left, I made a video (below) in which I shared some of my thoughts about my Inner Gypsy Wild Woman and left an simple way for you to connect with your Inner Wanna Be. I would love to hear more about what wishes to share itself with the world.  I can tell you from personal experience, it is liberating!

Love of Massage

Falling in Love with Massage

Before I ever had a massage, I knew I wanted to love it.  I didn’t know why I needed massage in my life, I just knew I did.  The first time I had a massage, I went because I was ALL knotted up, physically, emotionally, and spiritually.  Massage doesn’t just work with the physical body. It also has the ability to touch the emotional, mental, and spiritual bodies. I have always been a sensitive person. As a child, I cried easily.  My feelings were delicate. I held onto the weight of the world. My body took it all in.

I had just graduated from high school when I first considered massage.  I had heard the word but never considered it something that was useful or proper.  But one night after a trip to the ER my mother’s nurse suggested we might look into massage and reflexology, explaining the benefits for stress and headaches.   Not long after our conversation, just about a month, my mother passed away.  I spiraling into deep grief, all the while having a strong curiosity about how massage might have made things different.  Could my mother have found a way to a less painful life if she could have experienced massage?

I would never know the answer, but I was determined to discover all I could about this touch centered therapy as a way of discovering what might have been.

Tea AltarMy Mother

I never suffered from migraines, but I felt a kind of overall inflammation that came with the grief of losing her.  I use inflammation not as a medical term, but more of a descriptive.  My soul felt inflamed.  The grief was pervasive, and I had little coping skills.

That is how I got knotted up. I got to a point where I was tired of the knots and the inflammations. I found my way to a massage therapist.  The massage felt great.  As she worked on me, I felt as though she was releasing a kind of tension that went beyond the muscles. My spirit felt like it was gently opening. I was emotional for days afterwards, but I knew it was the storm before the calm.

Massage would change my life.

Over the course of several years, I got massage as often as I could afford (every several months) and eventually followed my love of massage to school to get my license.  I went into massage looking for how to help get beyond just the physical benefits.  I wanted to give an experience that invited healing for the whole person, the same kind of experience I had been given.

Along the way, I discovered subtle nuances that offered that.  They were the same elements I cultivated in theatre and art classes, the same I now use as a Life Coach and Creativity Mentor.  They rise out of a feeling of safety, out of mutual respect, deepening trust, and a willingness to listen with empathy.

wildlycreative

Sure the mechanics of a massage are important, but I am believe in treating the whole person.

These are also the seeds of the community that is coming together under the umbrella that is Creativity Tribe. It is a sanctuary for Creative Spirits.  For some, that might seem like I am talking about art, but for me creativity goes much deeper than that. Creativity at its core is the fashioning of life itself.  It might take shape on a canvas, in between rows of dirt in the garden, on stage, or page.  It might also find its way – most certainly finds its way – into our relationships, our choices of how we treat ourselves, what we do with what the day gives us, and how we make meaning in our lives.

Massage called to me all those years ago, over two decades ago, so that I might give that gift of creativity and of touch to my body and then share in the creating of peace in the body, mind, and spirit of others.

When was the last time you had a massage?  Don’t you think it is time?  Your body will thank you for it.

Creativity Tribe 2013

creativity_tribe_2013

So many new things are going on here at Creativity Tribe in the New Year, I figure I better start talking about them….if for no other reason than that I just might pop from excitement if I don’t!

First, I have begun fleshing out the tribe aspect of Creativity Tribe.  I have been asking myself how do I reach out to more Creatives, connect with Creatives from different disciplines, and help the people who resonate with the idea of a Creativity Tribe connect with each other. I have also been exploring how to offer opportunities for connecting with and celebrating ourselves!

Here’s where I am at……

{This Sensational Life Challenge}

I have reached out to Creatives from a variety of disciplines to join me in an upcoming blogging series that focuses on the senses. This Sensational Life Challenge is an opportunity to delve into the rich experience that life has to offer.  Each week, we will explore some aspect of life that one might say is sensational.  I have included some of the original senses, but being a Creative, I just had to stretch the concept to other less traditional senses.  So we will be playing with the sense of touch, taste, hearing, etc. but will also explore, for example, concepts like a sense of direction, knowing, or letting go. One thing they all have in common is that they will help you tune into This Sensational Life. (I hope you are digging on my play of words.  It is certainly done on purpose. I think the more we engage our senses, the more ALIVE we feel, and the more alive we feel, the more we connect with the essence of who we are!)

I don’t want this to be JUST about the posts though. I am pairing each post with an invitation for you to share your perspective and experience on the week’s focus.  Dive into the senses with me!  Discover a new sense with one of our guest bloggers. Craft your own sensational life, one week at a time, one day at a time, one vibrant moment at a time!

 {Body Wisdom Project}

Starting the first New Moon of the year, I am joining with Jessica of Hearth Roots on a project very close to my heart. The  Body Wisdom Project invites us to listen to our bodies, to ask ourselves, “What if my body is my teacher?  What would it want me to know?”  BWP will offer 13 Moonthly themes that will encourage us to cultivate a relationship with our body like never before.  Jessica and I invite you to join us on the journey.  More information about this, including a peek at our shared website will come soon.

{Creativity Tribe Teleseminars}

One of the best parts of being the curator for a space like this is getting to interact with the Creative Spirits who find their way here.  When I first started out on this journey, I wished for rich, meaningful interactions. Well, this year, I want to invest in that possibility even more, so I have created a series of teleseminars that will give us the opportunity to invest in our own creative journey while connecting with others who are on similar paths.  Each event will include a time in which I share tips, tricks, or hints for improving or understanding some aspect of life to help you move into the flow of a life well lived.  I will open the call for questions a hot seat coaching.  Hot seat coaching is short and sweet coaching sessions that dive in and help you get a direction for moving towards what you want in life. Calls will be recorded so that if you are unable to make the time, you can still gain from them by listening at a later date.  I am beginning the Creativity Tribe Teleseminars with 5 Secrets to Getting Out of Your Own Way Everyday in 2013 and Getting on with a Sensational New You.  You can register for the series here. And meet me the second Wednesday in January for our inaugural call!

{Coaching ….me & you}

Above all the wonderful plans I am making for 2013, having the opportunity to work with other creatives to craft their lives, their businesses, their sense of self, their creative growth, their projects, and their dreams is at the very, tip-top of my list of favorite things.  The relationships that come out of coaching are extra special. They are a blend of gentle guidance and a shared journey. They are about personal growth, creative aspirations, and meaningful connections. This kind of one-on-one work will support this community in a profoundly personal and deep way. If you are interested in learning more about working with me, you can find that information here. I would love to visit with you to find out if we are a good match.

Self-Care for Survival

Because awful things happen and we often struggle with how to make sense of them….

Because there is no making sense of the senseless….

Because our hearts are designed to feel….

And our society often tells us not to…..

Or fails to teach us how to care for the heart that cares….

Because I care that YOU care and want you to feel the same comfort you wish for others….

For all those affected by the tragedy at Newtown or by any tragedy….. peace.

What Dreams May Come

I have been visiting an old memory, going back in my personal history to a time just a few years into adulthood.  I remember feeling like I was chaotic inside, a tangled pile of jewelry. So tangled I wasn’t sure anyone, even the most patient of souls, could clear the confusion.  And yet something made me examine the knots with an eye bent on weighing out the treasure that might be held there.  Sure enough, I discovered the snarled pile of bobbles and trinkets promised to offer a few genuine gems.

It began with a line, a hope stretched out before me, turning into a curve and loop, a reach and dip until it created a map of my future.  For years that map served as my guiding light.  On it, I proposed that I might help people, that I might help others find their voices, show them how to activate their creativity.  I fancied the idea of being a published writer, of traveling cross country to speak at conventions, retreats, workshops, and intimate circles.  I wanted to offer experiences that would move people to be better, and somehow (and I really didn’t know how it would happen), I would be happy, confident, at peace with who I was, and stable enough to serve as a leader to others.

I have been visiting that old memory. They come in flashes, moments over the course of a month or so when I looked deep within my battered spirit and tried to scry a future for myself.  That memory represented a gamble I was taking….on myself and on life.  Did I dare dream?  Did I dare contemplate a possible destiny that was THAT big and THAT different from where I thought I was?

There are some choices in my life when I have chosen bravery over staying at the status quo, flat out said to myself, “To do this takes courage.”  I am grateful for the choice I made then.  It is because I took a chance on that possibility that I am where I am today.

Where I am on my Life Map

I am a helper.  I open doors for others.  I help them find their voices. I show people how to access their creativity.  I have been published.  I have traveled across the country to speak at a convention, been honored with an award for blending my helping skill with my creative gifts.  Have taught workshops and led intimate circles.  I offer experiences that move people…that move people to a better place.  And somehow, thank all that is good, I am happier than I have ever been in my life.  I am stable enough to serve as a leader to others, am confident and at peace with who I am.

I would say the map worked!

And so today, I sat down and began looking at that once tangled web of treasure….now put in order and set as a lovely collection of the beauty that is me.  I asked myself where these riches might take me, what new horizon was in store.  And I began working on a new map, an act two to my BIGGEST, BESTEST dreams come true.

The paper was too small to hold my dreams.

This coming week I will be making a shift here at Creativity Tribe to offer life coaching as my primary service.  It make sense on paper and in my spirit. I have been in the helping profession for years, teaching theatre and art, acting professionally, selling my work.  I have help creatives risk exposing their inner thoughts and imagining, assisting them in redefining what being an artist means so that they don’t have to come from a place dark and twisted to create.  I have been a massage therapist for a decade now, growing my understanding of human anatomy and the anatomy of the spirit all at the same time.  I have been asked by friends to serve as officiant at their most sacred life shifts: marriages, house blessings, births, menstruation celebrations, deaths, and funerals.  I have pursued my interest in the creative arts by earning an undergraduate degree in communication arts and have followed my desire to help by attaining a masters in counseling.

I can’t tell you how good it feels to put my hands out and say, “I have this to offer.”

The word coach doesn’t describe what I feel like I offer, but it is the closest term our culture has.  Companion, champion, wise woman, mentor, or perhaps guide?  Whatever feels comfortable, I am here to help….I am a helper.  It is what I have wanted to do professionally for years and now I am making it official.  I am a coach…of life, of creativity, of dreams wishing to be fulfilled.

What adventure awaits you?  I am in!  Shall we?

(All the Life Coaching details will be rolled out next week. You can subscribe to the blog by email ….at the top of the side column …if you are interested in following the shift in the site.  I would also like to invite you to celebrate a peace-filled holiday with the StressLess Holiday Cheer Party….my gift to you.)

This post coincides with the ending of Art Every Day Month.  What an adventure it has been!  Personally I have felt indulgent, diving into creativity for such a long streak.  I also have a very deep appreciation for the relationships that have grown out of this adventure.  I hoped to meet a few creatives, and was delighted when  a few stepped forward to connect as friends!  Thank you, each of you, especially Leah, for offering your creativity and your support.
