21 Days of Self-Care: Re-Treat Yourself Well

It's time to retreat yourself well. 21 days of self-care

21 Days to Re-Treat Yourself Well

(This event is closed.)

The need for self-care seems to hit when it is most inconvenient. Life gets busy.  Life piles it on.  Someone you care about needs a little extra care….or a lot.  And you are lift wondering how in the world to make it all work without dipping into reserves that already feel shallow.

Several years ago at the height of “going places” in my career as a helping professional, I got a hard taste of burn-out. Finding my way back to center meant balancing my busy schedule of pursuing my dreams while also committing to a consistent practice of meaningful self-care.

I have found that weaving this self-care into the rhythm of life is ideal.  If we make plans to take care of ourselves the same way we plan for taking care of business, we can have both.  If we don’t, we are often left wanting more of life and not having the energy or focus to make it happen.

With that in mind,  I have woven a spirit of renewal into a 21 day self-care e-course with Re-Treat Yourself Well.

Rachel Payne in shadow and light.

When self-care takes a back seat, you can feel low of spirit, low of energy, and challenged to find your way back to the bright side of life again.

That is why I have designed Re-Treat Yourself Well, a 21 day self-care e-course, in a way that helps you consistently schedule a tiny bit of time for investing in yourself in a big way.

Lorene BoulterFocus:  The word focus chose me this year! I’ve taken on many challenges for 2015, and I’ll need plenty of focus to accomplish them: art classes, swaps, guest teaching, besides all of my creative endeavors.  I need to focus on clearing out the old to make space for new. Change is good. I feel it’s time to let go of some past I’ve held on to!

Let Go:  This has been a process (I don’t know if I want to use a journey metaphor)–internal, intellectual, emotional….Many signs have confirmed that yes, it is time to let go….whatever was–both the precious and the disheartening–simply “was”…..let go…..now is the time to rely on strength, circle of arms, cadre of friends, and “be” what I am becoming.

flower mandalaPatience:  Not the funnest of words or goals in my world, but one that is required this year if I want some things to happen in my life. It’s also the hardest thing for me to do.  I am an action person.  I have an idea and then instantly want to make it happen…. when some things really do require the opposite to blossom.

Change: And by that I mean in my innermost self that has been not so happy for too many years. I have many reasons to be happy and positive in my life and I want to really get in touch with those. Also a change in my creativity. I love to “make stuff” but I find I get stifled and not flowing. I need to let myself go and be free. Want to let go of some things in my past.

Collaboration: I’m opening myself up to collaborate with more people this year, creating more opportunities to feel good and make magic with like-minded people from all over the world to catalyze a larger ripple effect of awesomeness.

Grace: I wanted to remind myself as a special needs mother that sometimes my patience can be tested with therapists, case managers, teachers, parapros, psychiatrists, speech therapy, occupational therapy and many more. I can be challenged in everyday life by people or situations as many of us are, and sometimes, I can get a bit short with people. My goal with grace being my word of the year is to remind myself to try to handle things with more grace and less irritation. We are all doing the best we can with what we have to work with, and I have to just keep reminding myself that.

Also on the creative aspect, Grace as a verb (Graced) means to add beauty or decorate. I have stifled so much of my creativity the past few years, and I have so much creative energy floating around that I really wanted to harness and hone in on tp make some really amazing creations this year.
~Heather Ryno, Nourished Soul Coaching

Balance: My word is Balance, (maybe.. there are so many things I struggle with) but I think balance of the physical, emotional and spiritual. How to learn to take care of myself in these ways so that I can take care of others in the same ways. The balance of doing or thinking for or of me, and also others without one or the other suffering for it.

Paint Mojo Deja Vu

Art is my Fave

Seems I have been down this road before!

A year ago this weekend, I headed out for the Texas Hill Country for an art retreat with Aussie artist Tracy Verdugo.  The event was beautiful.  I was so moved by her painting style that I have been playing with and tweaking it for the past year.  When I found out she was making her way back to Texas, I jumped at the chance for a reunion.  I am calling it Paint Mojo Deja Vu!

Note: You too can soon have a Paint Mojo experience.  Check out the pre-order option for Tracy’s upcoming book

Paint Mojo {Making Life a Work of Art}

The event in is Austin….my motherland! (That is where I was born…it is a beautifully weird, artsy town.  My kinda place!)  I will be staying with friends while there.   I am especially excited for a Friday night Halloween party with one of my favorite college buddies.

Then, on the way home, I am spending a few days at a hilltop horse ranch.  Sounds like an extended weekend filled with indulging of my creative spirit!  It is my favorite way to live!

Self-Care Sabbatical

If you were able to watch the video above, you would see that it is about taking removing, covering up, and destroying the big picture in order to get to something more simple and often more pure.   This is something Paint Mojo has brought to me the first time around.  After watching the video (which was made just after my return from the first retreat), I decided to let it inspire me to simplify my life a bit more…. for just a bit.  So I am going to extend my Paint Mojo retreat into a little Sabbatical that will allow me to go deeper into self-care.

Don’t worry, I am not going away.  I am going to be going into my healing process even further and giving myself some downtime.  It is a gift we all need to give ourselves every once in awhile.  I would love for you to leave me some love in the comments below, and then look for me to return in a few weeks.  I will make sure to bring a few pics of the event to share and whatever insight my time off brings me.  I want to encourage you to take a bit of time off in your life too.  If even an afternoon.  Love yourself…in action  by cultivating inaction!

Celebrate with Me

Last year on this day, I was in Austin, Texas chasing a dream.  For years I had wished to move my thriving blog Art of Collecting Yourself to a more fleshed-out website designed to let me do more of what I love….connect with Creatives.   Finally….the day arrived.  I had joined a website publishing challenge called One K in 1 Day and found that one of their meet-ups for support was in Austin.  So I headed out with a goal to actually publish the site on the day of the event.

I put in lots of time before hand.  I selected a theme and then tried to figure it out which also meant figuring Photoshop out.  Yikes!  Day by day in the month leading up to the event, I crafted the bones of my very first website.  It was one of the biggest creative challenges of my life.  But given how much it meant to me, I thought it just might be worth it.  And I was right!

Today marks my one year anniversary of the website.  Earlier in the summer I quietly celebrated 3 years since I started blogging.  All tolled, I have published a whopping 499 posts between the first blog and this site.  Wow!  That is an average of over 3 posts a week.  Can you tell I love writing?!

My posts have slowed down recently a bit as I am upping the self-care, taking care of my sweet little womb.  (For more details you can catch up on Boldly Saying the “C” Word.)

The year to come is so full of potential and possibility.  I just can’t help but wonder what I will be sitting and typing about in September of 2014.  I hope it will mean more beautiful connections with those who find their way here, more magical moments of understanding and loving myself, and more big dreams to spin into reality.

I want to close this post with huge thank you from the bottom of my very deep heart!  Every day someone from my creative community touches my life in ways that are big surprises to me.  They share themselves, their creations, their hopes and allow me to serve as witness.  And more and more as I go down this new journey of healing my body, that same community is rising up to offer their support and love to me.  I can’t tell you what a huge gift this is.  Life is good!  Thanks for being part of mine!

Creatively yours,

Body Wisdom Project {Listen}

A few days ago I picked up an old journal. Inside I found an entry about wanting to pay closer attention to my body and promises that I would practice more self-care. The shift in my relationship with my body from that time to this is quite apparent.  Self-care one of my personal core values.  But, I crave a connection that is even deeper. I crave more peace, less doubt. I crave a level of understanding and interaction that can only come from a practice of listening to the wisdom my body offers.

counselinginsightjournalguide-1-2-1

This idea isn’t new to me. Over the last several months, I have been preparing to make this shift along with a dear friend of mine and dedicated blogger, Jessica from Hearth Roots. Mine and Jessica’s friendship has been centered around body wisdom from its very beginnings. She was my dance instructor, and I, her massage therapist. Several months ago we started seriously considering how to get the same level of connection with our bodies that we had in the good old days, when we were dancing regularly, when we were both wrapped up in finding a life mate, when we were discovering who we were as women.

BodyWisdomProjectBadge

We each wanted to tap into our body and seek it’s guidance and direction for the journey it wanted to lead.  We named our shared adventure the Body Wisdom Project.  It begins today, on the first New Moon of the New Year.

We have chosen a word to guide the Moonth’s focus: LISTEN.  As the Moon makes its way from darkness to full light, we will discover what it means to listen to the body and what the body wants us to know as we listen.  We will each share parts of our journey and lessons with you on our blogs and on a website we are creating as a sort of sacred meeting space for anyone interested in joining us in the Body Wisdom Project.

New Body Wisdom Moon: Listening

I close my eyes.
All around me are the swarms of life among which my body exists.
The rat-a-tat-tat of a game played in the next room,
neighbors or perhaps even strangers talking in the street in the middle of the night,
the cold, wet air of Winter seeping in from under the pier and beams.
Slight, sweet taste of pecan from dinner contrasts
the uneasy ache of restless nights that hibernates between my shoulders.

What does it mean to listen?

My awareness turns to the body.

Are the senses part of the body?
Those are the intelligence gathering agents between body and the world it lives in.
Separate. But related.

What does the body have to say tonight?

Breathe….she says.
Breathe in peace.
Rest in the breath.
Dance with the breath.
Know that you are the breath and the body.
You are the knowing.
When you show up to the body’s wisdom,
You are showing up to YOU.

With gratitude for the listening….

Indulging ME

Just over a year ago when I embarked on the journey of working for myself, I placed one thing at the top of my list of values….self-care.  I wanted my serious business woman self to honor the hard, working dedicated but oh-so-human self.  In the beginning, I worked that into my day like a teenager with a new driver’s license.  I took my time getting up in the morning, lit candles as I was blogging, burned incense while painting, napped if I felt like it, created one-person retreats…..I lived up the self-care.

Then I got all filled up, and I began to push myself.  The drive to reach for my dreams felt good.  It was empowering. I have felt unstoppable. One dream after another fell into place. I got a contract to teach at the Creatives Celebrating Sisterhood Art Retreat, was one of Mixed Media May‘s featured artists, taught a drama camp and then an art camp, had my first e-course (Touch the Moon), my first one-woman art show, got my website up (created it myself….oh that was a feat!), began offering my Life Coaching services and was featured on a radio show.  In between, there were a thousand little firsts, tiny parts of dreams clicking into place, big connections with individuals, and plenty of witnessing the ah-ha’s of the Creatives who find their way here.

Week before last, I felt like I was running for a marathon.  I was stretching myself to the max to keep up with the energy my dreams were setting off.  I LOVED IT!  I got SO much accomplished.

Then, I crossed the line, finishing the busiest week of my year so far.  I exhaled and all the wind in my sails went with it.

Now, I find myself craving the quiet. I see myself needing more me time, less work time, and the one who lobbied for self-care is poking her head out again to say, “Hey, remember what you promised?”

Yes, I do remember.  Gratefully, I remember.

So as the year winds down, so will I.  I make no apologies of it, need not sympathy for feeling disconnected from my drive to push forward.  I know this is part of the creative process.  This is a vital part of sustaining long term creativity, the part where we recognize our accomplishments, celebrate them, and rest.

How will I do it?  Well, to start off, a corporate holiday party, of course.  I am taking my employees (that would be me) out for a spa day to include a luxurious massage (which I traded for some art a couple of weeks back….score), all the chai I can handle, and adding naps to my very short to do list.  I am also going to do an inventory of my accomplishments and put them up somewhere….maybe tack a gold star to them.  Oh, and throughout the holidays, I am going to unabashedly brag about myself to anyone who will listen.

I am indulging in the splendor of my year.

And I have to admit that sharing this with you warms my heart so much. Last year at this time, I wanted what I have today so much.  Some days I felt so incredibly stuck, not being able to see the other side of it. But I always trusted that something would come out of my dreaming.

I am full of gratitude (please don’t just pass by that word without feeling the beauty of it) for the community that joins me on this journey…..for the artists, the bloggers, poets, dancers, followers, leaders, likers, the dreamers, the hopers, wishers, wanters, and the quiet ones who secretly pop in when no one is looking….for all of you who help hold this dream up…..I am full of gratitude.

What do YOU celebrate this year? What would you brag about if someone would listen?….don’t leave me bragging alone. How would you celebrate if you were me? I would love to know what self-care and celebration look like for you. I can always use a new idea!

Today’s Indulgence….a MEDIA FAST. Yep, I am spending 12-21-12 by checking out of the internet, news, books, radio, tv, and phone and am checking in with myself, my friends and family, and my intuition.  Wanna join me?

Self-Care for Survival

Because awful things happen and we often struggle with how to make sense of them….

Because there is no making sense of the senseless….

Because our hearts are designed to feel….

And our society often tells us not to…..

Or fails to teach us how to care for the heart that cares….

Because I care that YOU care and want you to feel the same comfort you wish for others….

For all those affected by the tragedy at Newtown or by any tragedy….. peace.

Circle Art

This last week when I attended the Paint Mojo Texas Retreat with Tracy Verdugo, we spent time exploring our personal symbols.  I have to confess that jazzed me like nobody’s business!  I like symbols.  I look for them out in the world, in the way of logos, graffiti tags, signs, patterns, etc.  I collect books that explore ancient markings including hieroglyphics, runes, labyrinths and mazes.

This evening at the bookstore, I sat, listening to folk music and letting my pen explore the page.  I began with one of my favorite symbols, the simple circle.  I added marks, allowing my hand and mind to automatically go from one strata to the next.  Gently, but quickly, a mandala appeared.  A mandala is a symbol which is said to represent the inner self.  It is like taking a snap shot that reflects some aspect of the self in that moment.

These mandalas were drawn during one of the few rain storms we have had this year. The lightening was so frequent friends kept saying it looked like a disco outside.  The water means a bit of relief from the drought.  There is something psychologically renewing about rain, especially when the world is turning brown from a lack of it.  These mandalas call forth renewal, growth and abundance….for the city around me…and for the part of myself that needs to be quenched.

Gifting

I have added a new page to my site (oooo, just LOVE doing that.) I hope you will check out.  It has another kind of mandala….a Self-Care Mandala. Head over and get a copy of it, then let me know how it works for you!  It’s a freebie!

Check out the other AEDM entries for Day 4!

Big welcome to all the other AEDM’ers. I would like to invite you to add your creative art site to the Faces of Creativity Page if you feel called to join us.  Help me meet a goal of a total of 50 links on that page by the end of the month.

Let’s grow a tribe, together!

Choosing this Moment

Most of us say to ourselves, “I want to be more creative. I want to do more art.”

Today is in front of you. This moment is begging for you to choose IT, shouting, “Pick me. Pick me.”

And when you do, you are really picking yourself.

It is just that simple.
