Angels & Faeries Week: Power Animals

Angel Week 4

Welcome to Angels and Faeries Week!  I am celebrating the countdown to the grand opening of Angels In My Studio 2013 by sharing some of my favorite winged, spirited, and energetic artwork. Angels In My Studio 2013 is a 5 month online class that goes to that space where art and mystery, creativity and imagination meet.  As part of the art course, each week you will be invited to explore angelic imagery through art and guided meditations.

Featuring Power Animal Art

When I was a toddler, my parents gave me a stuffed animal, a small red fox. I didn’t play with baby dolls then, I just wanted my fox. What was it about that little fox that felt so comforting? Was it the bright vital color, the softness of its fur? Was it the sweet face?

Over time, the color faded, the fur got loved off, the nose tore, and only one eye remains (yes, I still have it!) I think it felt alive to me, like a friend and a protector.

Over the course of my life, various animals took places of value for one reason or another. I kept seeing them pop up here or there, perhaps I dreamed of them, felt the need to draw them, or spent time fascinated by them more than others.  As I got older, I began referring to them as my power animals because it felt like I was learning from them, taking comfort in them, and that they helped me stay connected to the wild, uninhibited part of myself.

The idea of a power animal comes from the spiritual traditions of many cultures, especially those that are more nature oriented. We may think of them purely as part of a shamanic belief system, but I would bet that most people can relate to feeling close to a certain animal. Perhaps thinking back, you may find an animal calling out to you which has meaning and connection. Could that be your power animal?

Grandmother Butterfly invites eyes of transformation.

My power animals often show up as drawings in my art journals with messages of support, guidance, or shared wisdom. Sometimes the drawings arise out of some scribble or doodle that takes on the shape of the animal, sometimes it comes from a meditation or dream. However it comes, I try to explore it and see if it has any applications in my life.

Owl Art

Owl sees that even in the dark there is light.

One of the most powerful dreams I have ever had involved a raven. The night before I started graduate school to study counseling, I dreamed I was going to a magical school where I was learning to be a healer and where I would have to learn to fly and protect myself. Beside me was the raven. It was as much my teacher as the wise woman heading the class.  In the dream, we took to the skies. It was invigorating and felt like my inner world was letting me know just how committed I should be to my outer studies. That next morning when I arrived at class, a black bird sat outside the door of the building. It looked at me, and I couldn’t help but wonder if it had dreamed about me the night before.

A Guide for my Journey

Whether or not we believe in the actual existence of animal spirit guides isn’t necessarily the important lesson to take away with us from this post.  For me, life is full of so much mystery that if I had to verify everything  before I found value it in, I might live a boring, unfulfilled life.  Instead, I choose to let go of believing and hold onto playing with the idea, symbolism and stories that want to unravel in my imagination….and my heart.

Angels & Faeries Week: Faerie Friends

Angel Week 3

Featuring My Faerie Friends

Fairy Friends

Faeries, everywhere faeries!

I have to admit, I am a sucker for the faerie folk!  I love the lore, the mystique, and the variety of ways they manifest within the Arts.  Some of my favorite movies are fae friendly…..Labyrinth, Dark Crystal, Neverwas, Willow, and, oh goodness…don’t forget Peter Pan!

I began drawing faerie art just as soon as I had the courage to play with drawing.  I found them comforting.  They were fun to draw, felt inviting, and let my mind slip into a world of fantasy and folly.  They provided an integral part of the deep healing journey I took on after my mother passed away.

Decades later, in one of the times of my life that was most physically challenging, I found myself stricken with sciatica from a bulging disk.  No fun!  I was flat on my stomach for a few weeks, unable to stand of sit without excruciating pain.  I had never felt so low in my life.  But the tide began to slightly shift, and one day, I felt good enough to sit in a chair for a few minutes at a time with an ice pack numbing the worst pain.

On the table where I was sitting, I discovered a scrap of paper, a pen, and a magazine.  I tore out a little face and drew a silly body.  I remember thinking when the crude sketch was done that I had been about 2 minutes without severe pain. It felt like a huge breakthrough. In front of me was a wee one (see below).  This little faerie with her tiny broomstick, blossom hat, and witchy heels was the first of many faerie friends to take my pain from me for short periods of time.  They were my distraction, my meditation, and my medication. Who knew a faerie could be such good pain management!

AngelsFaeriesWeek

As time has passed, I go back to my collection like paper dolls and look for wisdom, joy, understanding, and inspiration in them.  Some have been transformed into other works of art or have led the way to understanding some aspect of my being.  They are some of the brightest, most child-like, funky art I have done, and yet, they usually show up when times are the darkest….perhaps to usher me to a new level of light.

They are a joy to share with you.  I hope you might see something in them that feels comforting to you or inspires you to look for your own tribe of faeries.

My Dirty, Filthy Artsy Life

art journal 2

I have been getting my hands dirty with paint and marker, glue and glitter almost everyday.  It makes me feel alive!

Spirited Sprite

The drawing above was done during an early morning drawing session with a few little girls I was hanging out with before Art Camp.  They started talking about fairies and asked me to draw one.  This is my little Spirit Sprite.  She was the delight of the little artists and inspired a whole day’s worth of winged one art sketches by them.

This Summer has been filled with Art and Drama Camps, each day offering a chance to dig into my creativity with play and spontaneity.   All that art helped me realize I don’t share enough of my art with you, so I have created a page on the site that features different kinds of my work.  Some formal, some just doodles.  They are all from my heart.  I hope you will take a peek and let them inspire you to live a dirty, filthy artsy life.

Would you like to see my art?

Hop over and take a look!

Next Friday I will be sharing the finished Summer Solstice Journal Page.  And more Faces of Creativity Tribe.

Where Art Meets Mystery

art and soul

My journal has become my closest companion this last month.  It all began as I started attending a weekly meditation group and found rich stories pouring out of my inner worlds.  Often the stories were of my own healing or the impressions I felt from those I was close to.  Then, I began working with family members who were ill and a friend who was dying and the images I saw when I closed my eyes and got quiet invited themselves onto the pages of my journal.

I didn’t set out to draw my inner landscapes and the muses that populated them, but as my hand moved across the page to doodle, scribble, and otherwise make a mark, I found them showing up there.  They feel like some of the most personal drawings I have ever done.  They are more raw, more intimate, coming from my intuition. They are an expression of my spirituality.

I want to share them with you because they have felt like medicine to me and that kind of spirit-soothing through creativity what I hope to nurture here in Creativity Tribe Studio.

Today’s Intuitive Drawing came out of an evening spent in hospice with my friend.  As I waited in the silence of her room, I heard a call from within myself to sing a song I sang at the death bed of another friend.  The first time I sang it for the dying friend, I sang it over and over in her last minutes.  It felt like I might be helping to sooth the way for her.

The song says, “Surely the presence of Love is in this place, I can feel it’s mighty power and grace. I can hear the brush of angel’s wings, I see glory on each face. Surely the presence of Love is in this place.”  I think I have changed some of the words over the years, so it may have another version floating out there. But this is what I sing.

I struggled a bit with the urge I had to sing the song.  Others were in the room with me.  So I decided to sing it in my mind and began meditating on the door in front of me. The door to the room was cracked so that only golden light spilled in.  As I stared at the light it changed to a neon lavender…changed as things do when you stare long enough.  And I felt like I could see shadows like people passing in between the room and the door….as if they were in the room but all I saw were the shadows.  I thought perhaps I should stop staring so hard but for some reason I was drawn in.  I wasn’t scared because somehow although I felt like I was actually seeing something, I was seeing nothing.  Now I know that is a strange thing to say, but sometime there just aren’t words for making sense out of the unusual.

A nurse came into the room and asked the family to step out so she could tend to our friend.  As I walked away, I tried to shake the feeling that I had peeked into another world.  I tried to let go because if I was ever to REALLY experience something like that, I wouldn’t want it to be forced.  I wouldn’t want to spin a story from nothing.  And those pulses of light shadows were barely there.  Perhaps I was tricking myself.  Perhaps I wanted something more to happen.

I made it to the end of the hall and sat.  There was a hubbub in the room next to ours.  The family came out to let the nurse know their loved one had passed.  I was stunned.  I couldn’t help but wonder if I was singing the song for him.

Crossing Over

That night, alone in my room, I turned to the journal.  My journal has been one of those things that has been with me through the craziest, most confusing of times and has never let me down. It brings me clarity.  Letting my hand move across the page, I let go of the image above.  The picture is grainy, but I actually prefer that to the crisp lines.  The event was grainy.  It is an in-between life and death, knowing and unknowing, kind of experience. It left my mind curious to see the whole picture, wishing to know if what I sensed was the real deal.

I think  in times like this, in times where something other worldly, super natural, or something of the spirit has happened, you have to make a decision to doubt or just go with it.  Going with it is what I chose to do.  And this is what that means….

I think I sensed the passing of a person from this world into the next.  I think my intuition connected with him and wanted to ferry him to the next part of his journey with that song.  I never knew him….never saw him….but this image feels like it will connect me with him forever. And for that I am grateful.

Do you have a curiosity about spiritual art, intuitive art?  Join me and a host of spiritual creatives for a journey into a place where art means mystery.  Enrollment is open now….Angels In My Studio 2013.  The Magic begins July 22nd. I for one, can’t wait!

Angels In My Studio 2013: Give-Away

Angels in My Studio 2013

One of my favorite creatives Jack Lemmon was known to start every new take for a movie by saying “It’s magic time!”   That’s the way I feel about making art of any kind.  When we engage the imagination, we never know where the invitation to create will take us.  There have been times when I walked away from a play, a poem, a blog post, or a work of art and wondered….Did that really come from ME?!

I like to imagine in those moments that something more has had its hand in the inspiration of my work….

Angels In My Studio?  Perhaps.

That kind of inspiration has put winged things and spirited beings front and center for much of my work over the years.

That’s why I was so excited to counted as one of Sheri Ponzi’s Angels for the Angels In My Studio 2013.  I am teaching a Spirit Doll Project, and I would love for YOU to part of the class.  I have the perfect opportunity for you to join the fun.  I am hosting a GIVEAWAY through June 6th for a spot in the course.  All you have to do is leave a comment on this post letting me know specifically why you are attracted to the course, then return June 7th to find out who won.  Good luck!

Angel Work

Marvel Us Moon

I simply marvel at the story that life writes for us.  It can be more captivating than any dime store novel, more heart breaking than the best  Hallmark commercial, funnier than an extended bloopers reel.  Sometimes it doesn’t feel so marvel-us, but if we step back just far enough and cock our head just right, we can often see magic before our very eyes.

My work the last several months has been thick with stories which play out in both my inner and outer life.  Working as a life coach, creativity mentor, and massage therapist means my work can take on many shapes.  Recently, I have been working with individuals who are re-storying their lives after news of life threatening illness.  I didn’t go out looking for them per say  didn’t place an ad inviting this theme, never even consciously put it out into the Universe, but they all came to me within a short period of time.  When that happens, those big synchronicities, I look at them as gifts. (Gift is my word for the year….and boy, do they keep coming!)

The work varies. Sometimes I do something simple like offer a sip of water or listen.  Other times, my work is more hands-on and more closely associated with my training in massage and life coaching.    That would all be enough, that work….it would be fulfilling on its own.  But as sometimes happens when we open our hearts to another, we heal something in ourselves.  I like to think of myself as their Angel and them as my Angels.  That is something to marvel over!

This week there has been plenty of Angel Work!

That has been reflected in my artwork, as well.

Angel WorkThis is from the art journal I started at the Art Retreat I taught in Wisconsin during a class I took with Junelle Jacobsen.   I have been playing with it the last several weeks.

This deep healing work and the art that is coming from it also reflect one of the focuses I am going to take up this Summer as an instructor for Sheri Ponzi’s Angels in My Studio 2013.  I am teaching a Spirit Doll Workshop where we will be creating mixed media dolls and getting in touch with our Creative Spirits!

Check back Monday for all the juicy details for a giveaway I am hosting for a spot in the class.  Wouldn’t it be fun to spread our wings together!?

Dreamcatchers

One of my favorite art projects recently was one I did for the gals at Paint Mojo Texas.  It was a labor of love for sure.  I made 20 little wire dreamcatchers to give to them during the retreat.  I chose dreamcatchers because I wanted something that reflected the word Mojo.  And dreamcatchers, a few days before Halloween, did just that.

I worked on an extra one today that is going out in the mail to a friend who I originally met on the blog I had before Creativity Tribe. She has been an integral part of this dream for me, supporting, encouraging, sharing her wisdom and creativity.  She is one of the tribe’s wise women. I hope she enjoys it.

These little webs are close to my heart.  I would love to continue making and sharing them as I build the web that will catch my big, beautiful dreams.

This last dreamcatcher is also my offering for today’s Art Every Day Month Challenge. I have been doing a bit of art each day but have chosen to hold onto a few items for special projects.  Girl’s gotta have her secrets!

Art Every Day Month is a movement, inspiring artist around the blogosphere! Head over and see what they are up to today!  Then, consider joining us.  It is a small act that makes a big different.  Creativity…….. engage!
