Follow the Impulse

FollowImpulse

My dear friend Jessica with Wild Heart Holistics often talks about “following the impulse.”  I remember her talking about it years ago when she was leading dance classes.  She wanted us to pay attention to how the impulse wanted us to move. At first I didn’t fully understand what she meant, but over time, I found myself trying to detect the impulse so I could follow it.

The impulse isn’t something that lives somewhere in the body and yet, that is where it comes from…the body…from our being.  For me it can come from different places…. a radiating wave of urging from the heart, a subtle knowing in the brain, a quick jump of the gut, a sharp pull on the shoulder blades as if we had wings that wanted to jump into motion or the echoing of many senses that pull the whole self towards a resolution.

Detecting an impulse is a very subtle art.  The impulse is often buried under foggy awareness so that it doesn’t occur to me that I have had an impulse for minutes, hours, or even days later.  But once it is detected, I know it as if it were a good friend.

Now days I have gotten really good at first detecting and then following the impulse.  When I act on it, I am often led to beautiful synchronicities.

Unicorn Magic

A Recent Impulse with Big Rewards

The listening…..

A few months ago, Jessica invited me to offer my art and share about the essential oils I love at the Earth Day Care Fair for her church.  I was in the middle of healing from surgery at the time and had no idea what the outcome would be or what my energy level might allow. But, there was this impulse to join in.  Finally, I decided to follow it.

I spent a few weeks preparing.  I got busy painting, bought a brand new Easy Up (purple!), and gathered the essential oil goodies I wanted to offer.  It felt good to work again.  Felt healing to dive into the paint.  And the nights that I stayed up bottling samples were delightfully aromatic.  I was having so much fun. (If you take a long breath, you might even be able to smell the wild orange and peppermint I have going right now in my diffuser!)

First reward….

A few days before leaving for the EDCF (Did I mention it was out of town ….about a 3 hour drive?), I posted a few pics of my art just to show my friends what I was working on.  When I woke up the next morning, I had an offer for my little unicorn (the background art for the unicorn above).  I knew then my impulse was taking me on a ride!

Double feature…

My artist hubby, Eric, and I headed out for our trip.  We visited Rose Duncan of RoseHeartNSoul Creations & Coaching for her art show at Intermezzo Gallery and Studio in Boerne, Texas.  The show was beautiful.

It was exciting to see so many art lovers doing their thing.  As the visit was about to wind down, the impulse took over and made another synchronicity bloom.  The manager of Intermezzo, Kathy Cody Gallaway, introduced herself.  We got to talking about my art. Rose suggested I share art images from my phone, and before I knew it, I was their newest artist!  Intermezzo is representing 12 of my mixed media works.

What is even more exciting is that we started talking about me potentially teaching workshops at Intermezzo.  Rose and I are collaborating on one right now that is very near and dear to my heart involving Artist Trading Cards.  The other involves a labyrinth walk and processing with art.  I can’t wait to see where that all goes.

Did you know I love labyrinths?  They often show up in my art… and on the beach when I have a few friends to make them magically appear!

Irene Jaan takes her turn at drawing out the labyrinth’s circuit.

They keep coming….

Later that night, Eric and I ended up at Jessica’s house and began telling her about the exciting news.  As we were talking to her a friend wrote me about doing the cover work for an upcoming book and I got a message about a return coaching client wanting to continue our work together.  All this before the actual Earth Day Care Fair even began.

The EDCR went well.  I shared the oils with lots of folks and did some really fun trades for my paintings.  Then, out of the blue got another message that a friend who had seen my paintings online when I post pictures of my booth wanted to buy my owl painting.

Owl Be Here

And when you get it all….

All that bounty in the course of three days was amazing for me, especially after a year of putting off so much of my passion as I pursued a victorious outcome with the uterine cancer.  I found myself that weekend holding up a new realization that I really could have it all.  Success with all my passions….  art, workshops, my love of essential oils, and life coaching.  And not only could I have it all, the Universe was sending signals for me to get
exactly what I was wishing for.  The trick?  Follow the impulse.

A Celebration….A Challenge

CTBKGSpiral-3

A Celebration

Today I have been spinning with awe.  Something I wished to change in my life and set in motion last Fall rose up today to show me its resolution.  Sometimes we don’t know how our dreams will play out.  Watching them unfold can be a trip.

Last Fall, I began exploring a very ingrained story about dying at 45 like my mom and her father.  I don’t know why I got it stuck in my head, but I did!  I kept myself from truly following my dreams because I just couldn’t see life beyond that.  As 45 inched closer, I decided I would reach for wellness and longevity…..trying to avoid my fear of death wasn’t working so I might as well go through the back door!  I had tried to deny my fear for so long without making headway that I thought claiming life might give death a run for its money.

I began seeing a chiropractor who was also a naturopathic doctor.  Some of her methods were unconventional.  Some were cutting edge.  When it felt right, I followed what she prescribed.  I began listening to my body, working on the subtle issues that came up.  And a theme began to develop.  I was sick.  My cycle went crazy. You can read all about it in my previous post Boldly Saying the “C” Word where I share about recently discovering I have uterine cancer.

Yah, on my way to reaching for wellness and longevity I discovered the thing that just might have killed me just as I had been spinning in my imagination for decades.  Instead frantically wrestling with the fear, I shifted my reality.  Here I am with a very curable dis-ease, caught early, with a great outlook for the future.  I think some people might immediately see cancer as a pathway to dying.  I know for me it is a catalyst for living with more freedom than I have in decades. Cancer helped me let go of death and grab onto life.

With or without the cancer, I was on my way towards a better life thanks to the body work, emotional and spiritual work I have been doing since I started working on living longer.  Each day I would look for ways to make life better….healthier, happier, more connected to nature, people, myself, and that Something More that walks this journey with me.  Life felt like it was full of possibility!

So that is my celebration…..now an invitation for you to move towards a celebration for yourself.

A Challenge

A Challenge:  What if there really was a field of possibility for you to pull your life’s desire out of….what would YOU set in motion?  Anyone dare state that today?   Check inside and see what might feel like it wants relief in your life.  You don’t have to know HOW you are going to do it.  You don’t want to know really because a big shift usually happens organically and synchronisticly.  Claim what you want in your life and then listen for the next right step.  For me it was moving towards a healthier, longer life by going to see that specific doctor.  I kept listening along the way.  Do it and I will hold that energy with you!  You can post here what you want or simply leave a note saying you want to make a shift and I will hold space with you.  Once you know what you want…listen and take the first move.  The Creativity Tribe is playing Possibility Tribe!

Deep Gratitude

I want to share my deepest gratitude for the incredible reception I got in sharing my diagnosis of uterine cancer earlier in the week.  I had a LoveStorm of support, encouragement, and prayers expressed here on the website and through my personal Facebook Page.  I had more visitors in one day than I often have in a good week.  So much love!  I can still feel a circle of care gathering up around me.  I want to assure each of you that although I have a diagnosis, I am feeling strong, have no out of the ordinary discomfort and am just waiting for my surgery. I am adding in lots of self-care, and doing what I love in my personal life and business life.  Thank you again….from the bottom of my very grateful heart!

 Creatively yours,

This Sense-sational Life {blessing}

sensational

This Sense-sational Life is a blogging series that explores the senses as a way of cultivating a more mindful, connected life.  This week’s post is inspired by a women’s ceremony called The Blessing Way.

.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.

The women gathered around one woman whose body was round with child. A first-time mother joined by the first-time father.  The grandparents beaming.  The friends fluttered around in excitement…in anticipation…and then, in celebration.  It began with food. It always begins with food. Then the showering of gifts.

BabyShower

Booties, lots of booties. Onesies adorned with cute sayings, stripes and the occasional monkey. Crocheted this and that.  The mother’s smile growing, the vision of the family’s life taking shape.

All of this was traditional. It is how my mother was showered by her friends, how in my family women have witnessed the coming of the child for generations.

But a new tradition has come to being among some of my friends.  The tradition has its roots in the Navajo Blessingway ceremony but in truth is only a resemblance of the intention of that ceremony.  This tradition has been spreading among women’s circles for awhile but is still very new for some.  The Blessing Way can be used anytime someone wishes to honor or create a transition in their life or wishes to bring themselves or their loved ones goodness, beauty, success, order, or harmony.

We each brought a bead, presenting it to her, lending her strength and hope.  As we did the stories that were passed between the gifter and the mother became a gift to all who heard them.  Nervous laughter was the first sign that we were taken the circle to a deeper place. Only the mother knew everyone there so as we opened to her, we were having to trust in the virtue of those she counted dear.  But the opening happened.  Her mother came forward, offering her wisdom.  As she did I remembered that her mother sat with me in the minutes before I walked down the aisle, when my mother who had passed away long before could not. I knew the interaction between them would take the circle even deeper.  Then her father came forward.  We were surprised he would go there with us. He spoke eloquently, like a poet, directly from the heart, saying what every little girl needed to hear from her dad. The connections were deep and quick.

The bowl filled with beads, each with their own story, each holding the energy of a blessing.

When I walked away from the shower, I was tired from the work of the day.  My spirit, however, was filled…was overflowing.  I knew I must speak of a Sense of Blessing with you this week.  This is only one way to create blessing in life.  Through out the week, explore with me what blessing looks like for you…what if feels like in your body.  Ask yourself how you know you are blessed and how you know when you are blessing another.  Share your thoughts in the comments. And visit me at the Creativity Tribe Facebook Page to find out how I am cultivating a Sense of Blessing throughout the week.
