I throw the word creativity around a lot. It is a product of leading a life that is packed full of creative endeavors. I take my creativity with me everywhere, and even at home, it is front and center. I might as well have it tattooed across my forehead!
With that kind of focus on a word, it isn’t surprising that nearly daily someone announces to me that they are not creative. They always say it like they are apologizing. They want to be creative but aren’t….in their eyes. I think what is happening, though, is that they have a pre-conceived notion of what creativity is. They have placed it on a pedestal so high that their out stretched necks can’t really see it.
When I can, I sit with them and try to help them redefine, reframe, re-member the essence of creativity. I flesh it out for them so that they can understand that it is not a high art, but instead something organic, manageable, and personal.
Creativity is…. the ordinary made meaningful.
Creativity is….powerful and playful.
Creativity is….risky but rewarding.
Creativity is….available to all of us.
What is creativity for you?
